10/25 I have a friend who's going to Hawaii for honeymoon and they have
5 days planned for Maui. She'd really like to not rent a car but
her frugal side also won't pay 80+ dollars per person per day for
van tours. Anyone know of any tours that are significantly cheaper
or other alternatives? Thanks.
\_ Don't have an answer but what are some of the advantages of
the different islands? I'm Hawaii dumb.
\_ No car in Oahu, smart.
No car in Maui, stupid. REALLY stupid.
Tours... ugh, if you like being herded like a cattle, sure
there are lots of them out there.
\_ Your friend should go rent a car. They are totally missing out
if all they do is take stupid van tours which will cost way way
more than renting a car anyway. While there, they should go see
the guy doing the magic show in town. I can't remember his name
or where it was but he's the only guy with a magic show on the
island. And yes, it will cost her a few bucks to get in the show.
\_ The Magic of Polynesia with John Hirokawa is on the island
of Oahu. Can you say OH-AH-HU? Oahu is not Maui. Oahu inhabits
80% of the Hawaiians and is a great place to piss off newly
weds. It raises blood pressure for new husbands who have to
deal with their materialistic wives loves to shop at the mega
Westfield, Gucci, Luis Vuitton, Tiffany, and exact same stores
one could find at the mainland. If you have a materialistic
wife and want to raise some blood pressure, go to Oahu.
What are we talking about? Oh, the magic show. You're getting
Oahu and Maui confused, you dumb fuck.
\_ Hi! Since I've been to Maui and never been to Oahu and the
guy I saw was definitely not Hirokawa, maybe you'd like to
come back and apologise for being such a complete asshole.
No, don't bother, your apology isn't worth anything anyway.
\_ Here is the magic show I saw on MAUI, not OH-AH-HU.
http://www.warrenandannabelles.com
And amazingly, the site actually says the show is on MAUI,
and not OH-AH-HU. How odd is that? But being a dumb fuck
I was probably on OH-AH-HU and not MAUI so what would I know?
http://www.warrenandannabelles.com show was awesome.
\_ Doesn't answer your question, but if they rent a car there are
some really spectacular trips, like the Hana highway, the
North circuit or up to Haleakala to watch the sunrise. If they
go around the South, they'll want a 4x4 though. Seems like
kind of a shame to miss this stuff to save a few bucks. -John
\- jeeze, it's a honeymoon which means 1. you have two people to
split the costs over [or would have to buy two tickets in per
person stuff] 2. you'ld think you'ld splurge a little ...
trying to save money here is ridiculous. time is money and when
you come home with amazing memories or photographs, you wont
miss the cash. if you want to be frugal, eat cheep ... you can
go out to nice dinners later [and found in hawaii is largely
go out to nice dinners later [and food in hawaii is largely
leem or poor price/perf] but take advantage of the unique
opportunities in hawaii. the other money saving advice: dont
buy stupid vacation souveniers which just take up space in
your life. figure out what you want to do and then worry about
transportation. fixing the transportation options and seeing
what that lets you do is leem. --king of cheep travel
what that lets you do is leem. i have a high tolerance for
discomfort and generally travel quite cheeply, but you've got
to know when to throw money at problems. you want to set a
global budget perhaps [like we want to spend $2000-2500 instead
of $3000], but on a vacation you cant try to optimize every
step ... too much time overhead. --psb of maghrebia
\_ She knows the car is really the best option for Maui in
general. It's not the cost of the car she's worried about.
The groom's eyes have been really bad lately and she's not
a good driver, so she's worried about safety of driving
in unknown environment. -op
\_ If they can't drive well how the fuck do they get around
in California? Are they one of those immigrant drivers
who drive 50MPH on the 880/101 carpool lane?
\_ Driving there just isn't that hard. They might want to
skip the Hana Highway if they're *really* bad drivers
but otherwise they should just get a car.
\_ Just drive slowly on the Hana highway. It's pretty
tame but very very doable. They might just want to
make sure to not do it after dark as it gets _very_
dark. And I agree 100% with psb. -John
\_ Actually, car rental in Maui doesn't cost all that much. We've been
paying an average of $30/day and as a rule of thumb, it's cheaper
when you rent for a whole week. (e.g. you get 7 days for the price
of 5 days. If she wants it cheaper, buy it as a package (with hotel
and/or airfare). Hawaii is usually designed to be cheaper when you
don't buy (airfare, hotel, car) separately.
\_ If you friends are handicapped, why did you she is frugal?
\_ If you friends are handicapped, why did you say she is frugal?
BTW, how much did "they" spend on an engagement ring? |

10/24 We have a Jeep Wrangler because it was the most robust car we could
find with high clearance and low center of gravity for a lot of the
non-roads we end up on. That said, I am surprised at the number of
these I've seen while visiting SF, and am confused--they're
mechanically cantankerous, uncomfortable gas guzzlers without much
cargo space, and seem totally out of place on the mainly paved
roads here--can someone explain this? Doesn't parse. -John
\_ You obviously haven't seen a Jeep commercial, and if you did you
didn't dig it. In either case you're totally out of touch with
mainstream America.

10/25 Fedora Core 6 is out:
http://fedoraproject.org/static-tmp/FC6ReleaseSummary.html
\_ Anyone still use Fedora Core?
\_ Why wouldn't they?
\_ Because Ubuntu is a better and more popular distro?
\_ In what way is it better than RH/SuSE/Debian?
Will most commerical software for RH/SuSE run
w/o problems on Ubuntu, or do you have to do
a hack job to get it to work?
\_ Because it's a bleeding edge product with an aggressive
EOL timeline and no real advantage over more stable
products like CentOS. -tom
\_ Depends on if you use RHEL as your production
environment. If so, then it makes sense to use Fedora
Core on some systems if you are looking ahead. Ubuntu
and CentOS don't really fill that need. If you do not
use RHEL, then I guess you don't care.
\_ Many of my customers hesitated about deploying
on CentOS b/c they didn't really believe that
is was RH compatible. For some reason, the same
was not true of Fedora Core. They viewed it as
a way of testing stuff out on a pre-release of
RHEL.
\_ Exactly. The "for some reason" is that they both
are Red Hat products.
\_ So FC is a complete RH inhouse job like
in the old days (ie before RH9)? I thought
that it was spun off into the open source
"community" and that RH merely supervised.
\_ "The Fedora Project is maintained and
driven by the community and sponsored by
Red Hat, Inc." From http://fedora.redhat.com.
One look at that web site should show that
you should not be running Fedora in any
production environment. -tom
\_ Don't run in production != don't run
at all. As above, it's useful for testing
pre-release. FC basically ends up becoming
RHEL. |

10/25 http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/25/nyregion/26marriagecnd.html NJ's highest court rules 4-3 that same-sex unions are entitled to the same rights as heterosexual marriage, but leaves the name of that union ("marriage", "domestic partnership", etc.) up to the legislature. Dissenting justices correctly assert that same-sex couples are entitled to participate in state-sanctioned civil marriage. \_ I guess I don't understand why thegays are in a tiff about this. \_ I guess I don't understand why the gays are in a tiff about this. I mean marriage _is_ a historical concept, as is all of the terminology associated with it. Of course gay couples should have the same rights and privileges, but why do they think legislation should manage "repurposing" of traditional terms? Do they think we should legislate away the terms "husband" and "wife"? \_ Marriage has legal as well as social meaning. You are free to any social meaning you want, but if the legal term is marriage it should be the same legal term for both. Would you have a problem with the government getting out of the "marriage" bussiness entirely and just having a blanket civil partnership setup? Seems the easiest solution to me. -aspo \_ Totally. -pp \_ I agree as well, but I think that's because we're all unsentimental libertarian geeks. unsentimental liberarian geeks. To the extent that marriage can be interpreted as a religious instutution, the government has NO business ever getting involved in that. To the extent that it's just providing infrastructure for two people to form a legal contract in regards to things like hospital visitation and wills, I think most Americans are ok with allowing that for gay couples at this point. \_ Yes. The gubamint had better start getting its act together and protecting our family values by outlawing deviancy like garraige, abortions and evolution. Otherwise, hellfire and brimstone like soddom and gommora will surely be visited on this sinning land. \_ ob "separate but equal" \_ ob distinguishable from Brown. \_ i don't think so, but it does need to go to SCOTUS \_ The Brown plaintiffs had the weight of the 13th, 14th and 15th amends. behind them. Those amends., esp. the 14th were passed primarily for the purpose of preventing the States from engaging in discriminatory behavior against a particular class of of people, a class of people of which the Brown plaintiffs were members. No such claim can be made wrt gays. The 14th was not passed for their benefit or to right wrongs the States had visited upon them. Even under Carolene Products, it is hard to argue that gays are a suspect class who are in need of special court protection b/c they are unable to avail themselves of the political process and therefore they ought to be protected by the 14th (thus rendering Loving, &c. inappl- icable.) Barring a 14th amend. claim, I do not see the basis for fed intervention in a purely state law issue. \_ "separate but equal" & 14th must be tested in SCOTUS as it applies to gay marriage. i'm not sure whether carolene or loving really help you that much. |

10/25 Argh, I don't know what to do. I've been dealing with so much hassle
for more or less the past 6 months, trying to shop online for bras,
dealing with sizing issues, returns, exchanges... now it's to the point
where I ABSOLUTELY NEED new bras, as I have ONE that, while not being
the right size, is close enough that I can wear it. I NEED more, though,
because even that one is pushing it. It's more than two years old and
starting to fall apart.
There was a sale going on with Lane Bryant's Cacique bra line. I ordered
a few in 30 G... in most bras, a G is slightly too big. In three of the
bras I ordered, I was hanging out of it majorly. To the point where I
don't even know if an H will fit me. I'm going to exchange them this
weekend if I can. One of the ones I ordered, also in a 30 G, fit pretty
well. Not perfectly, but considering the dire NEED I'm in, I decided to
keep it and wear it. Well, in the week and a half I've worn it, it's
gone from being slightly too snug in the band on the loosest hooks to
suddenly barely being tight enough on the tightest band setting. How is
that POSSIBLE? I looked at the bra, and it didn't look stretched out,
but now I constantly have to tug it down in the back.
ARGH.
I am just SO FRUSTRATED right now. I need bras that fit and I need
them NOW. I shouldn't have to deal with this. I WANTED something cute,
something that I'm not embarrassed to be wearing, but at this point I
should probably just return the Lane Bryant bras, go to the one store
in town that has decent bras in my size, the store that's run by the
creepy lady who barges in on me in the fitting room, and get one of
the utilitarian Goddess ones that I HATE because it's the only thing
they carry. At least then I'll have SOMETHING. Even if they're ugly
and uncomfortable, at least they're something I can try on in *gasp*
an actual STORE, and know that they probably won't magically stretch
out.
Sorry, I know this is a little bit angsty, but I just kind of need to
blow off some steam with people who understand.
\_ Where is this coming from? Is this some old penthouse letter or
something? |

It is one of the many things you can do while there. What were you planning on doing every night for a week on Maui? It isn't that busy a place at night. \_ I don't know. What type of things do couples do at night? But if the obvious doesn't come to mind, there are plenty of things. Watch the sun set, attend a Luau (if you're fortunate to be invited to one), walk down Lahina at night, gaze at the stars on an island where the skies are actually clear, or just plain sleep early.
