9/5 What a typical boy racer would do if he owned a few oil wells:
        http://english.pravda.ru/photo/report/auto-827/2
\_ For this much trouble, why not make the damn thing walk?

9/6 The media and the Israel/Palestinian conflict
        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_B1H-1opys
\_ Holy crap! This is the first thing I've ever seen that makes me
respect the Palestinians at all. Manipulating the media whores
with simple street theater--genius! I'm not about to go off
supporting the Palestinian "cause" any time soon, but this sure
beats terrorism, and is probably also more effective.
\_ This is precisely how things like goatse.cz got spread around.
Label your stuff, or expect people to ignore you.
\_ What's goatse.cz? Anyway, thanks for the advice. I added
              a description. -op
              \_ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goatse
\_ Under the def of of "Too Much Information" should be a ref

\_ Don't even bother with a laptop. PDAs are the future.

9/6 Papa's got a brand new bag^H^H^H^H book. On Algorithms. For the
        time being, a free download.
        http://www.cse.ucsd.edu/users/dasgupta/mcgrawhill
        \_ I think I just had an Umesh Moment[tm]
           \- Momento Umesh:
              http://home.lbl.gov:8080/~psb/ASSOCIATES/UmeshMoment.jpg
BTW, have you read Papadimitriou's p0rn book?
\_ Wow, where's that from? And re: p0rn... no... urlP
\- what is an Umesh Moment?
\_ I believe the term was coined after ngeci bowman admitted to
having a strange, inexplicable, momentary crush on Vazirani,
which she described as an "umesh moment" This must have been,
if the politburo minutes are to be believed, somewhere around
                 '97 --dbushong
\_ That's obscure, but who is Umesh, and why would he
have such a moment? pp is saying they had a momentary
                    inexplicable crush on the book?
\_ Umesh Vazarani was our CS170 co-prof, along with
\_ Umesh Vazirani was our CS170 co-prof, along with
                       Christos Papadimitriou --dbushong
\- well in an odd coincidence then, at
cheeseboard i just ran into an associate
of mine who had "many umesh moments" [used
to traffic with him ... may still occasionally].
maybe your friend will accept umesh's brother
as a substitute ... they are in the same field.
\_ There's a mistake on page 11 of the book. Movable type was invented
in China 400 years before Gutenberg and the metal printing press
was developed in Korea a little while later (still before 1400).
           - ciyer
\_ Did they publicize their results in Europe? No? Then bully for
              Gutenberg.
\_ You're in idiot. Steve Guttenberg never invented shit.
\_ You're an idiot. Steve Guttenberg never invented shit.
\_ That's not what the Stonecutters told me.
\_ Dude! But he was in Police Academy! Surely he invented
                    SOMETHING!
\_ He invented his own Australian accent:
                       http://imdb.com/title/tt0099450
\_ Clearly only the western inventors count.

9/6 Who wrote /usr/local/bin/ef? Just curious since I wrote the same
        thing years ago in tcsh.
\_ I don't remember who wrote the original, but I did some work on it.
For a previous job I beefed it up a bunch to be more cross-platform
and optionally send mail with a copy of the checkin message on
every save (and also to deal more nicely w/ files that someone
skipped using rcsvi on and not blow away their changes) Ping me
if you want a copy. --dbushong
        \_ I did, biotch. -root

\_ See, free nations are peaceful nations. Free nations don't attack
each other. Free nations don't develop weapons of mass
           destruction.
\_ I'm the decider, and I decide what is best. And whats best is
for Don Rumsfeld to remain as the Secretary of Defense
\_ We've got hundreds of sites to exploit, looking for the chemical
and biological weapons that we know Saddam Hussein had prior to
           our entrance into Iraq
\_ We believe he has, in fact, reconstituted nuclear weapons.
           [a few months later]
I don't believe anyone that I know in the administration
ever said that Iraq had nuclear weapons.

43 percent of the Americans today believe Saddam Hussein was
personally involved in September 11, 2001. Question for you
motd academics. What is your estimate on how many of the 43
percent also believe in Intelligent Design?
\_ 99.5% Note, all this says to me is that the default course of the
intellectually lazy in this country is to be Christian. I think
even if you're a Christian you can agree with that.
\_ ALERT: The above is an unpatriotic liberal message
\_ Being Christian != believing in ID. -tom
\_ Being Christian != believing the bible?
\_ I think the Vatican's latest position is that they believe in
ID and they don't think ID should be taught as science.
ID and they think ID shouldn't be taught as science.
\_ I understand that, but I think Christians are the largest
segment of ID supporters, and intellectually lazy ones the
                 largest segment of those.

9/6 It's official: Bush confirms existence of secret CIA prisons:
        http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/5321606.stm
\_ What's awesome is that the Gitmo "compromise" they are pushing
will force Congress to essentially choose between letting KSM go or
allowing evidence extracted via torture to be used in court.
