8/23 Dear scoped pointer experts. Let's say I turned a regular ptr into
        the following:
        scoped_ptr<MyClass> myObj;
Now there is a method that is expecting type MyClass* in the argument.
If I simply pass myObj into that method, it will complain "no
matching function for call to 'myMethod(scoped_ptr<MyClass>&),
        candidates are: ... myMethod(MyClass*)"
What's the proper way to pass a scoped pointer? Alternatively I can
just use the regular ptr and explicitly delete in the destructor,
but I'm wondering if this can be done. Thanks.
\_ Uh, can't you do myObj.get() to get the raw pointer?

8/24 Pluto loses planet status. -John
\_ Why do you hate cartoon dogs?
        \_ That's no moon...
\_ '"and has cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit."
Pluto was automatically disqualified because its oblong orbit
overlaps with Neptune's.' Wouldn't that metric disqualify
            Neptune as well?
            \_ First come first serve.
\_ You can't have the criteria mean "cleared of all material"
because no planet would qualify. The only practical way to
interpret it is "cleared of all objects of comparable size".
\_ First come first serve. Neptune was admitted first.
\_ They fucked up. They should have listened to their committee,
which would have kept pluto and added several more. Much more
           fun. --PeterM
\_ Would you really like it if 10 years from now there are dozens
of known 'planets'? It kind of dilutes the meaning of the term.
\_ What's wrong with "dozens" of known planets? We can select
which we think are important, i.e., all the non-pluton
planets, with pluto/charon being notable as the first of
                 the plutons. --PeterM
\_ Apparently you're supposed to call them ice dwarfs.
There are more than dozens. Why should they be planets?
They aren't what we traditionally consider planets,
at least in terms of size.
                    \_ That's no moon...
\_ This is just plain stupid. Sometimes a planet is just a planet.
                    \_ That's no moon...
\_ So your criteria would be... "We say so."

                          \- not
\_ Yeah the most logical is boring old sequentially-numbered
codes involving machine location and type. My company scrapped
our old "fun" names (the Linux boxes were all something to do
with cold/winter/penguins, the Suns were things involving
suns/stars/hot, although we also had fish like halibut, not sure
what that referenced. But with blade servers they wanted the name
to tell the location. They are incompetent anyway though.
\_ The problem with the location in the name is what happens
when it moves? I cannot stand names like: sparc34_b202_eng24
        \_ Four-letter words.
\_ Four-letter dirty words for body parts: cunt, dick, cock, boob.
              What else?
\_ My first company used element names, and they let the engineers pick
the elements. So people usually pick names or symbols that were
           close to their names.
\_ server location / OS / function and a number. For sites with
           zillions of non-unique systems. E.g sfouxsvr00123
           \_ use DNS delegation properly.
\_ A "good" naming scheme will use this AND have loc codes
in the hostname, so it's also visible in NIS and ADS. Most
sensible name setups use a combination of "logical" names
                 and CNAMEs. -John
\_ I kind of like D&D monster names. Lots there to choose from.

\_ Sci-Fi character names. I still have fond memories of an

           not as much fun.
