6/29 How does mysqlhotcopy backup innodb? I know that ISAM tables are easy to copy, but innodb contents are all in this one innodb file, so I'm wondering how it deals with innodb. Curious. |

6/29 Interesting US cultural maps: This one illustrates regional divisions based on what cities people consider their cultural and economic center. I guess the SF bay area is confused because you have strong pulls from different directions (SF versus San Jose or "silicon valley") http://www.commoncensus.org/maps.php Kind of related: soda vs. pop vs. coke http://www.popvssoda.com/countystats/total-county.html |

6/29 Do all 10s Shimano Ultegra levers come with buttons? In another word, say you buy a bike with Ultegra levers but without the computer, what additional accessories do you need to buy to mount your own computer? |

6/29 My Shimano Ultegra double crankset has a few bits that are worn out. I'm thinking about changing it to a triple crankset. Approximately how much would it cost to change it yourself? Also do I need to change my left shift lever? \_ First you will need to find out if your derailers can handle a triple\ crankset. My Shimano Dura-Ace rear derailer didn't allow for the chain tension differences that a triple causes, so I had to just go with a larger cassette instead. Your front and rear derailer may be less picky. If you have to replace everything your looking at 800-1200. I believe that the shift levers allow for 2 or 3 indexes, so you may be in luck there. -scottyg \_ Obviously you'd need to replace the right crank and chainrings. You probably also need to replace the front derailleur. Depending on the clearance, you may need to replace the bottom bracket (a triple might not clear your frame). I haven't done such a swap since everything switched to the stupid integrated brake and shift levers, but I'd guess you don't need a new lever. -tom |

6/30 Melanie Morgan calls for death penalty for NYTimes reporters. http://www.salon.com/politics/war_room/2006/06/30/fourth/index.html \_ This story is serving as a good litmus test to detect obvious shills for the administration. The Pres announced a program like this in a public speech in the rose garden, and plenty of newspapers reported the financial transaction monitoring, not just the NYT. It pisses me off that the House and Senate appears to be full of fucking idiots. |

6/30 Besides speakers and a tuner, are there any differences between TV's and monitors? If I buy a 24" LCD w/ DVI, will I be able to use the output from a cable/satellite box to my monitor? A friend of mine said it might not work, said something about adjusting resolutions correctly It's hard to google for this information w/o getting references to Linux or retailers. \_ Resolution, dot pitch, gamma, ... \_ Yes, I've heard these terms, but usually monitors have higher res and smaller dot pitch than TVs. I currently have a 2001fpw but don't have a cable box to test this with. I don't want to order cable/satellite if this isn't going to work. Has anyone tried this? Currently, I use the monitor mostly for DVDs and connecting to my laptop. \_ Some monitors (PVA and MVA technology) are optimized for accurate color but exhibit fairly bad ghosting with moving images. \_ HDCP compliance is a good idea if you can get it. It will be required more and more in the future. -ax required more and more in the future. Some cable/satellite boxes require it. If you are thinking of using something like a Dell 2405 and connecting it to a HD-Tivo, I would expect that to work, but not with HDCP sources. Check out the Westinghouse lvm-37w3 for an example for a 37" LCD panel with DVI/HDCP. It's $1300 or so. not with HDCP sources. 6/30 This photo of Ann Coulter was at the top of http://drudgereport.com today. link:tinyurl.com/h2hu7 (akamai.net) \_ It's funny how a woman that's passably (objectively) attractive can begin to look so foul just by reading what she's written and said. \_ Light is faster than sound. This is why some people appear brighter until you hear them speak.... \_ I've never understood why people think she is attractive. She just spends a lot of time on how she looks, that's way different from attractive. Almost anyone not ugly can spend too much time to look good for a camera. That's not beauty, that's craft. \_ She's thin and blond and reasonably photogenic. I think that's enough to qualify as "passably attractive" \_ She's not thin, she's bony. And her fact looks like a grinning skull. I still say if you met her in person you'd be amazed how much worse she looks. There is a ton of effort being made to make her look good on camera. \_ She's reasonably attractive in the candid photos of her, like the one of her at the softball game: http://www.time.com/time/covers/1101050425/gallery/index.html \_ She looks like a reasonably passable transexual: http://www.csua.org/u/gb6 \_ The woman's neither particularly attractive, nor is she ugly. The word is average, there are many others far nicer-looking than her, and not as ugly in their style and opinions. What's the fascination? -John \_ No doubt. There's so much to criticize about her. Why, then, do her critics focus so much on her (at least average if not better) looks? \_ what planet are you from? In our society, women are judged first on their looks, regardless of their talent or accomplishments. -tom \_ True in many cases, no doubt. However, in hers, I'm willing to discount this because it's pretty obvious that she wants to present herself as someone for freeper geeks to drool over (to compensate for her obvious deficits.) -John \_ Except that she actually looks fairly good and people want to insinuate that she looks like a man. This is a case of her politics actually influencing the perception of her appearance. I think she's offensive and not very bright, but she is physically reasonably attractive. Why not attack her politics if it's her politics that lead to assinine comments about her appearance? It's like saying that GWB looks ugly. It's neither accurate nor relevant. \_ Once again, what planet are you from? -tom \_ If she was judged first by her looks more people would probably like her. \_ Again: she's average (at best.) -John \_ Laura Ingraham >> ACOULTER ... although she looks sort of lesbo on her Iraq trip. |

6/30 I'm trying to set up SSH port forwarding of VNC between my laptop and my home server. Once I had it working but I lost be client-side config. I can use PuTTY to set up port forwarding and can successfully load webpages off the remote server by using <DEAD>localhost<DEAD> My problem is that I can't seem to forward port 5900 (VNC) to my remote machine. When I try telnetting to localhost port 5900 I get a connection but don't get the standard VNC handshake: "RFB 003.003" I know VNC is up on that machine because I can connect to it just fine when I am on the same subnet. Any ideas? \_ You're not running VNC on your local box on port 5900, are you? \_ Ooh, good idea.. but no. \_ OK, so in PuTTY, your Forwarded ports: lines for your server Session look like: L80 localhost:80 L5900 localhost:5900 Is that right? What OS is the server? \_ I had this: L80 http://myhost.com:80 L5900 http://myhost.com:5900 I changed the second one to L5900 locahlost:5900 and now it works. Thanks! But why did the HTTP forwarding work then? \_ Maybe your firewall/VNC server/whatever would allow loopback connections, but not connections on the "real" IP |
