2/15 Can one of you root guys please explain how tom has been
eearily and correctly identifying anonymous motd posters? Is he
abusing root or abusing his connection to root?
        \_ I don't think tom's been abusing root. Unfortunately, it's not
too hard to identify most motd posters even without root. If you
have ideas for how to make it harder, please let us know. --root
\_ why should it be hard to identify who is posting to the MOTD?
Do we really think the MOTD is a better place for not having
the basic auditing capability that every other forum on the
              net has? -tom
\_ I bet tom doesn't need technical means to know identify most
           posters.
\_ Several of us have various scripted ways of figuring out who other
posters are but only a childish schmuck would descend to that
level in a cheap attempt to 'score' points on the motd. And his
predictive abilities are hardly "eery". He has a terrible track
record of identifying people especially considering how often he
           names names.
\_ ooh, big bad tom naming names... Grow up, reiffin.
              \_ nice try but wrong.

2/14 What did you give/get for Valentine's Day?
\_ the lack of responses tells you that both students/alumni
           are pathetic dateless geeks.
\_ Dude, this was posted on Valentine's Day. Those of us giving

to shit on the motd in the evening. -dans
\_ A hangover. Dissapointingly, no black eye, however. No one wanted
to fight at the bar where I spent all night drinking alone.
\_ You're either a) frequenting the wrong bar or b) not trying hard
enough. b) is more probable than a). -dans
\_ A bit of both. I won't start a fight, I was just ready for
one. I guess that means I can't be dissapointed, when you
                 think about it.

cum inside her vagina without any protection. I hesitated a bit
but it turned out that she started using birth control last
month. Condomless sex, the best VDay's gift a man can get.

cold, cough and jet lag started acting up, so I took a nap on
the sofa. Woke up at 6 a.m. Noticed she gave me extra
blankets, box of tissues for blowing my nose, and set up a
portable heater. Left for work without waking her.
        \_ Gave:
2 Dozen roses, a drive down highway 1 from Santa Cruz to San
Francisco, and a tasty dinner at ShiMo Planned to surprise her by
bringing her to Pillow Fight Club:
           http://laughingsquid.com/2006/02/03/pillow-fight-in-san-francisco
and handing her a pillow in an obnoxiously cute Hello Kitty pillow
cover, but we didn't make it to SF by 6:00.
           Got:
Fresh, hand picked flowers, unrequested help picking up the dinner
check. Quality time with my smart, gorgeous, and wonderful
           girlfriend.
           Gave/Got:
Ridiculously mind-blowing sex that left both of us unable to move
for at least five minutes after we finished fucking.
\_ did you use a condom?
           Unrelated Recommendation:
ShiMo (2339 Clement @ approx. 25th Ave.), features the freshest and
tastiest sushi I know of in SF. Its specials are fantastic, the
spicy scallop roll I had yesterday rocked. Additionally ShiMo is
reliably open until midnight, and if folks are eating/drinking they
           will stay open later.
           \_ Have you tried Koo?
\_ A home cooked meal from me. Anal sex from her.
\_ Wait, you had to cook for her before she'd do your ass? Is that
a cheap bribe for you guys, or was she teasing you and building
              up the anticipation?

http://csua.org/u/ezj [Editorial by founder of the John Locke Society]
\_ He's probably right that divided gov't works better historically,
but I wonder if everything would be gridlock right now? At any
rate, this quote is damned statistics:
"He observed that from 1993 to 2001, federal spending on defense,
entitlements, and domestic discretionary programs all fell as a
           share of GDP."
GDP did crazy things during the tech boom.
\_ Government is supposed to be gridlocked. Haste in changing
laws should require a mass consensus.
\_ The GDP growth rate since 2003 has been the same as it was
from 1995-2000. The actual number of federal government employees
dropped during the Clinton Administration, too. This is not
a damned statistic, but a rare event.

China says the US should relax export restrictions of high tech
if it wants to fix the trade deficit.
\_ "In a complex and challenging time, the road of isolationism and
protectionism may seem broad and inviting -- yet it ends in danger
            and decline." -GWB
\_ What? Are they tired of stealing everything?
\_ china's trade surplus with the US is overrated. most of the
exported goods have componenets made in other asian countries.
china only does the finally assembling. that is why china has
a big trade deficit vis-a-vis other asian countries.
essentially the other asian countries "exported" their trade
surplus with the US to China. The overall US trade deficit with
asia also decreased recently. so don't blame china, blame our
wonderful allies like japan, taiwan, south korea, singapore, etc.
\- bilateral trade deficits dont mean anything. meanings of
aggregate trade deficits open to debate.
\_ the other thing is many of the products are made by US
companies in China, and these companies will send
the profits back to US (or are owned by US investors,
                 anyway).
\_ trade deficit with S.Korea, EU, Japan, Mexico and Canada also
reached record high. I think it's time to pressure these
           countries to re-evaulate their currencies.
\_ yes, these countries (except Mexico) make products that
compete with us, unlike China. We should keep the yuan
cheap so we can buy cheap stuff, and rein in inflation.

own VoIP products. Does anyone know of any clever ways to circumvent

\_ Yeah--get a decent firewall (I'm going to keep on mentioning
M0n0wall on WRAP) that does port NAT. That, or IPSEC, although
if you're both on dynamic IPs that can be a problem, depending on

http://csua.org/u/ezo (Palm Beach Post, url shortened to appease
        self-important person below)
\_ First they came for the overly-long urls, and I didn't speak
up, because I wasn't posting overly-long urls. Then they came
           for the yermom jokes...
\_ The convention of shortening URLs benefits everybody.
You spend and extra 3 units of energy to shorten and in
turn 10 people save 2. That's the same reason you should
add a substantive comment to your URL rather than a naked
URL or a "comment" like "cool" or "heh" or "check it out".
\_ Just letting it go beyond 80 is fine for most people. How many
people are honestly stuck with only 80 columns? (and how many
of those are actually copying and pasting the links?) I don't
mind formatting posts in general but for urls, maybe those who
who have a problem can do that work, or feel free to ignore.
\_ It's not about being 'stuck' with 80 columns. That's
the standard. You could write your sentences right to left,
too, and still be understood, but most people would be
                    annoyed with that.

Actually, comparing fox "news" with a late night talk show seems
           almost fitting.

\_ It wasn't my URL but I'm curious: why do you care?
\_ I like following URLs on motd, but I hate pasting them back
together when they overflow the line.
\_ Ok I can see that, but how does deleting them help?
\_ helps in improving future behaviour.
\_ Here on motd, the principle of free speech doesn't hold
                       a candle to convenience.
\_ On one hand I agree that pasting URLs together when they
overflow the line is a PITA. On the other hand, I dislike
that URL shorteners obfuscate the source of URLs. Hmm... I
think that when I have a spare moment I'm going to build a
better url shortener which helps solve the obfuscation
problem. PS Sign your posts -dans
\_ This has been suggested many times, but leads to <gasp>
urls that aren't actually that short. I like http://csua.org
and http://tinyurl.com ones because they're as fast to type as to
paste: i just type "u abc" into my browser and I have
a little shortcut thingy and voila!
\_ Heh. I had something a little slicker in mind. It
involves ajax cleverness when shortened urls are posted
in web fora, and possibly a Mozilla plugin for places
like the motd. Unfortunately, the Mozilla plugin still
creates a chicken/egg problem that I need to solve for

\_ Attorney client privilege is not codified in many countries, yet
it's usually accepted as a reason for not divulging information.
Or a journalist protecting his sources? Even if it is not a
legally valid reason, there is still precedent for it; if the
police really want to know something, they can always have a
subpoena issued; it is then your choice as to whether you will
respect the subpoena or suffer the consequences. -John
\_ Actually, the privilege of a priest to refuse to divulge

to prevent the priest from divulging confidential infor-
mation have a long history of acceptance at common law.
Many states, including CA, have codified these privileges

\_ That's a wee bit much. Hume is conservative personally,

\_ Yet not one picture of these 'cartoons'?
           \_ Um, heard of google?
\_ In how many major publications are the cartoons?
\_ curious about the timing, though. why they release it now?
\_ Some Aussie publishers were probably getting jealous that
the US image in the middle east wasn't being tarnished as
much by the European caricature fallout, so they decided to
              "correct" this situation.
\_ The ACLU just won a FOIA challange.
\_ The liberal media can't stand Muslims looking like

\_ What does this have to do w/ the caste system?
Those who act in this way do so w/ a completely
incorrect understanding of the caste system.
The caste system classifies men into certain
stations based primarily on their conduct, not
on their birth. Those who committed these crimes
have no claim to any caste.
To point to such people as the true and proper
illustration of the caste system would be akin
to pointing to hamas terrorists as the true and
proper illustration of Islam or cross-buring KKK
members as true and proper Christians.
