12/16 http://edu.ocac.gov.tw/lang/taiwanese/s1.htm I'm looking for full versions of the traditional Taiwanese songs like the ones above. Where can I find them? \_ There are lots of free Minan songs from mainland China here, so you'll see simplified characters: http://www.buxiao.com/10.htm http://www.buxiao.com/Person/2124.htm (children's songs) By the way why do people say Taiwanese when it didn't originate from Taiwan? \_ related question, how come some of the old Taiwanese songs sound just like Japanese songs? \_ because pro-independent minded Taiwanese for some reason admires Japan and missed the day of brutal Japanese occupations. \_ because taiwan had been a japanese colony, and many older taiwanese were japanese educated. \_ there is more than that. A lot of my friends' parents grand parents were Japanese educated too in Manchuria but they *HATE* Japanese to a point that they don't mind to start another war to settle the old score. \_ Manchuria was different. Japanese was much more brutal there especially given that guerilla resistance was rampant in Manchuria. Also, Japanese \_ Manchuria was different. Japanse ruled Taiwan for a much longer time under more peaceful conditions. \_ Manchuria was different. Japan ruled Taiwan for a much longer time under peaceful conditions. Japanese was much more brutal in Manchuria, especially given that guerilla resistance was rampant there. Also, Japanese especially given that guerilla resistance was rampant there. Also, Japanese rule of Manchuria was never secure, even after 1931. You may ask, why is there less resistance in Taiwan. Well, cause Qing China gave the island away, while KMT and CCP never officially gave up on Manchuria, even though the initial conventional resistance even though the initial conventional resistance (1931) even though the initial conventional resistance in 1931 was rather pathetic. Also, there were plenty of people in Manchuria who collaborated with the Japanese. My mom's side is from Manchuria, so I would love to believe that Dong Bei Ren (people from love to believe that Dong Bei Ren (i.e. people from Manchuria) were all red-blooded patriots, but that's not really true, unfortunately. not really true if you study history. \_ First of all, Japanese killed more than 600,000 Taiwanese during the 50 years of occupation (out of total population of less than 3 million) I wouldn't consider that a "peaceful occupation." Secondly, Qing didn't "give it away." Qing only gave up after *ALL* its navy vessels and half of its army got annihilated. These are two facts that Taiwanese love to ignore in order to justify its independent agenda. \_ because they need an excuse to justify their reason for taking lands away from the aborigines and impose discrimentory immigration and birth policies toward others. \_ so you're ready to give up your house, apartment, etc to the tribe that once lived on it? \_ If you don't care about compensate aborigines for land grabbing and genocide, then, stop crying faul for 228 incident. \_ Taiwan government already paid compensation for families of 228 victims a few years back. When will commie PRC pay families of Tiananmen victims? - Chicom Troll \_ Has American pay compensation to the Bonus Army in 1932? Did French ever compensate to the Algerian Revolution? give me a fucking break \_ Who's talking about Americans? Are you so devoid of self respect that you constantly need to lower yourself to the level of Americans? We citizens of the Heavenly Americans? We citizens of the Middle Kingdom should be more righteous, more just, and more compassionate than the lowly Americans. Have some self-pride please. Don't compare yourself to animals, or you will forever be beneath them. Don't compare yourself to swines, or you will forever be just as dirty as them. Don't use swines as yardsticks, or you will forever be as dirty as them. Kingdom should be more righteous, more compassionate, more courageous and more willing to fight against injustices than the lowly Americans. Have some self-pride please. Don't use swines as yardsticks, or you will forever be as dirty as them. - chicom troll \_ I think the poster who asked "why do people say Taiwanese ..." was referring to the dialect, not the race/ethnicity. \_ the dialect is called "Ming Nan." If you want to be specific, the dialect is actually coming from the city of XiaMen. Remember there is a significant percentage of Hekka population who is been in Taiwan as long as rest of the Ming Nan fractions. To say Ming Nan is "taiwanese" implies those Hekka and abroginies are not. \_ Try http://yesasia.com, they have a bunch of CD's from asia. I can't read Chinese, but searching on "taiwan" finds a bunch of CDs and/or artists. You can also search in Chinese. -oj http://us.yesasia.com/en/Search/SearchResult.aspx |

12/17 Has anyone used a led lightbulb like this? How bright is it compared to a regular light blub? http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000B8YY3A \_ That's LED, not led. Anyways, I really don't understand this fascination with energy saving bulbs. In a typical home, lighting uses less than 15% of the total electricity. Most goes to creating/removing heat (AC, frig). What is the point of spending money on expensive light bulbs that'll only cut energy cost by 5%? \_ A 100W equivalent compact fluourescent saves you something like $30 over the life of the bulb, IIRC. Why would you not want to do that? They also produce much much less heat, which will save on cooling costs. Percentages are great, but money is money. --dbushong \_ Replacing bulbs in ceilings is a chore? \_ I don't have cooling problems. I want my place warmer. Would you think I'd be better off over all using these bulbs and then turning the heat up more or leaving the heat lower and keeping my regular bulbs? \_ Your logic applies in winter, but not in summer. \_ Do you heat with electric or gas? \_ Because replacing bulbs in ceilings is a chore? \_ Cutting back 15% would mean we wouldn't have to drill in ANWR \_ According to cyberguys' web page, it outputs 32 lumens and is equivalent only to a 15W incandescent: http://csua.org/u/ecv \_ Umm, the one at cyberguys's is 18 LED version and the one at Amazon is 36 LED version from a differernt company, even. \_ Oops. Wrong one. http://csua.org/u/ecw 55 lumens and 25W (which isn't even double the 18 LED version, go figure). How do you know it's a different company? The Amazon page doesn't list the manufacturer; SmartHome is a retailer, and it looks the same to me. \_ 25W? I can't even find the floor with 25W. --old n blind \_ Make sure you are comparing apples to apples ... A 14W fluorescent bulb puts out the same light as a 40W incandescent ... I imagine LED lights are even more efficient. |

12/18 With FreeBSD's sysinstall program, is there a way to search for packages by name only and not by description? That is, if I search for perl, can I filter out all the zillion modules that happen to mention "perl" in their description? Alternatively, is there a way to navigate the long lists of packages without continuously using page-up/page-down? (Why are the first letters highlighted in a different color if they aren't mnemonics?) Is the answer simply: "don't use sysinstall, use ports"? \_ either use cd /usr/ports; make search name=whatyouarelookingfor or poke around http://freshports.org - danh \_ check out portupgrade too. if you use its -PP option, it will only use packages |

12/18 Brokeback Mountain, best movie I have seen in a long time. Just go see it. \_ Is it another one of those movies about gay cowboys eating pudding? \_ Yeahhh. Hollywood just can't seem to get out of that rut. \_ Homo on the Range \_ Homo, homo on the range Where the queer with the anal lube play Where condom is heard an encouraging squirt And the guys are all kinky all day \_ Bring ass shielding. \_ Oh my god it is a movie about GAY PEOPLE! I bet watching it will turn you into a big fag, well unless you just get raped by all those homosexuals in the audiance. \_ Gah! Nobody got the reference! -pp \_ I did. --dbushong \_ As I went a-walkin' one mornin' for pleasure, I spied two fudgepackers come ridin' along; Their hats was throwed back and their spurs was a-jinglin' And as they approached I was singin' this song: Yippee ki-yi-gay, git along, little homos; It's your misfortune and none of my own. Yippee ki-yi-gay, git along, little homos; You know that Wyoming will be your new home. It's early in spring that we round up the homos We wash 'em and lube 'em and test 'em for AIDS We round up the condoms and load the fuckwagon And then throw them homos out onto the trail Yippee ki... \_ I don't believe you. Where did you see it? \_ It was released only in SF, LA and NYC. \_ I saw it at Embarcadero One. I got tickets about three hours in advance on Saturday. \_ Before I spend $10/ticket to see anything, I'd like to know more than an anonymous motd person told me to go see it. What exactly did you like about it? What other movies have you liked and why? \_ My female coworker told me that I should see this movie because "there is nothing hotter than seeing two cowboys making love to each other". \_ Without revealing spoilers, I can only say that it is a powerful and compelling story about something I have never seen examined on the big screen before. Having grown up in the rural West, I can say that it did a good job portraying attitudes rural West, I think that it did a good job portraying attitudes and culture there. The acting was really great, too, at least one Oscar worthy performance. I also liked Godfather, Blade Runner and American Beauty. Look at the imdb ratings, they are all 9's and 10's (and 1's, probably from people who did not even see it). |

12/18 OK, I'm a serious carnitas fan, and I figure I should be able to make it at home pretty easily. The problem is there's a lot of bad carnitas out there (either bland or fried to death) and as a first time cook I am having a hard time telling the good recipes from the bad. Does any one have a tested and good recipt to share?i -glutton \_ I love carnitas and as such I find most of it out there is actually pretty good. If you find someplace you like then ask for the recipe. \_ Al Pastor >> Carnitas \_ That's a little like saying "glazed pork shops >> bacon" While the former may have more complexity, it will never have the pure unctuous joy of the latter. \_ My favorite Carnitas is from a place in Concord called LA TAPATIA. They do fry it but not overly-done, and after a few times sampling it you should be able to guess how they do it. It's on Willow Pass in Concord, not too far from Fry's Electronics. \_ Huh. They catered our building's holiday party a couple of weeks ago. The food was ass, but none of its was Carntias.
