2/19 Did you, as an undergrad, watch Animaniacs, listen to Beatles,
and sing Russian peasant drinking songs on Hearst? If you did,
can you say something about yourself, like when you were there,
who you're with, etc? I'm trying to locate old friends. ok thx.
\_ yes, yes, no(at least I don't remember,but maybe I was too drunk)
\_ Budu zhdat' tebja zaranee U izluchiny reki. Prihodi zhe na
svidanie, Ja prochtu tebe stihi, -- Pro podruzhek pro veselyh
I zatejlivyh rebjat, Pro tebja, moja ljubimaja, Srazu tri
stiha podrjad.
\_ someone please translate this???
\_ Everyday I'd watch Tiny Toons, Animaniacs, and Batman on Fox from
3:30 to 5:00. If time didn't allow I'd watch them on pre-recorded
VHS tape. WEB (Workstations at Evan's Basement) was too far at
night, so I'd dial into Berkeley's free PPP connection and telnet
to http://soda.berkeley.edu using my state of the art 33Mhz 386 with 16M
RAM via my blazingly fast 14.4K baud modem. From there I'd do a
lot of stuff, like checking email, reading motd, and stuff like
that. I'd listen to Arthur Rubenstein playing Chopin from a tape
set using my dad's old Panasonic tape player. Usually there were
a lot of work to be done, but since they're not urgent, I'd play
DikuMUD, chat/nwrite/ytalk to people online while listening to
Chopin's Noctures (on cassette tapes), on rainy, quiet, somewhat
lonely nights.
That was over a decade ago. I'm now ssh'ed into soda (now known
as http://csua.berkeley.edu) using my P4 3Ghz 1G RAM machine via broadbnd.
There are a lot of things I have to do but since they're not
urgent, I'm just checking motd, gmail, surfing, and chatting people
on AIM and Yahoo Messenger. Yes, it's a raining, quiet, somewhat
lonely night, and I'm listening to Chopin's Noctures, on MP3.
It's amazing how some things have changed, and how some things
haven't. I guess when you get old you start to treasure things that
do not change, or things that seemed insignificant at the time, but
now you have this strange fond memories of, like logging into soda.
I love soda and I hope it will never go away. -old man
\_ I'm not sure whether I should join in the reminiscing
or mock you.
\_ both is acceptable
\_ Did you ever get a girlfriend all those years?
\_ I was across the street drinking myself to sweet oblivion. |

2/18 Emacs guru please help. I am running shell within emacs and have a
couple hundred lines of text beyond the current prompt, which I use
one by one as some command argument. Somehow it just all disappeared
(from the current prompt to the end). It is not a c-w because I
couldn't yank it back. I didn't save it to another file/buffer. Is
there anyway to get it back? |

2/19 Looking for quotes that are syntactially different, but are equivalent
semantically. I'll start:
\_ BlockBuster: "There is NO LATE FEE. There is a restocking fee after
7 days"
\_ "The end of late fees... the start of more."
Clinton: "I did not have sex with that woman. Monica Lewinski. I did
have oral actions with her."
Bush: "There will be NO DRAFT. Extended volunteer will be required
for some people."
\_ who are already in the military... Nice one troll.
\_ Some soldiers who were already scheduled to leave
or wanted to leave have not been allowed. --> Draft.
\_ Is that "equivalent"? |

2/19 emarkp, jrleek, did it piss you guys off when Clinton had sex with all
these women? Did you think that he was an incapable president for
having sex in white house and that he should have been impeached for it?
\_ I have a related question. How many of you were pissed off that
the President of the Nnited States had to settle for a fat ugly
LA girl? If he's going to be boining in the White House it
should have been a HOTTIE.
\_ I'm getting tired of these anonymous questions directed at me. I'll
just comment that Clinton was not impeached for having sex in the
white house. -emarkp |

the timezone of the waller into the date format.

binary to make it output funny messages). He no longer maintains
the wall binary and the wall archive. RIP lwall. |

2/19 So I spend hours loading pics to yahoo photo albums and arranging
them in the order that I want. And then I go back and all the
pictures in every album are out of order. Why does this happen?
And maybe more importantly, what's a similar service that people
recommend that won't have this problem. Basically just somewhere
I can load my pics to that anyone can look at, even without them
having a passwd or account or anything. -pissed off at yahoo
\_ Definitely send them a pissed off email. Maybe someone will get
yelled at.

to "Freedom Fries"? Did they ever change the name back or
do they still call them that in the House cafeteria? |

2/19 What are the best anti-spyware programs? I am looking for something
that my parents can run occasionally to try to keep their windows
machine clean. I'm a BSD user so I don't deal with this type of
stuff much. Thanks --jwm
\_ For PC's use "spybot search & destroy" and "adAware".
\_ My detected spyware has dropped to almost nil after switching
browsers away from IE.
\_ ditto. The best way would be to re-install M$oft, then install
Firefox for them.
\_ I gave my parents a clean Win2k install, then put Firefox on it
and added Spybot and SpywareBlaster just in case someone unwittingly
ran IE. But I switched them over to a mac about 6 months ago, which
works fine for all the websites that don't suck in Safari. |

2/19 Looking for DVD players that play AVI/DIVX/misc files, recommendation?
\_ Hacked xbox (+ airport express for wireless file transfer,
if needed). The only limitation is that xbm can only up-convert
un-encrypted vobs, so you have to rip your dvds and re-burn or
ftp them to the xbox before you can watch movies in HD.
\_ how hard is it to hack xbox? and do you install linux on it?
\_ http://www.xbox-scene.com/tutorials.php?p=14|#14
If you're not handy with a soldering iron, you can always
hire someone to do it.
\_ The Xbox is pretty noisy. It's not a problem for gaming, but
it's distracting when watching movies.
\_ The Philips 642 is fairly nice/cheap. It tends to crop subtitles
on some of the divx files I've played though
\_ can I put 10 400M AVI's and make it play 10 hours? That's what
I really need..
\_ Seriously get a hacked xbox. Just drop in a 120 gb hd and
forget about wasting cds and dvds.
\_ Right, the DVP642 is the standard DivX player currently.
It's $63 on Amazon but sometimes back-ordered. I have one, it's
fine; actually, many, many people have one.
\_ I'm still waiting for a portable DVD player that plays AVI/DIVX/etc. |
