1/28 Follow up on Blacks and Social Security. Anyone know what the relative
likelihood is of a black man vs. a white man surviving until retirement
once he starts paying into SS?
\_ Someone posted the full table of life expectancy per year lived,
broken down by white/black, male/female the other day. I'll try
           and find it again.
           There we are...
           http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nvsr/nvsr53/nvsr53_06.pdf
\_ So from page 5, it's clear that Blacks (esp. black men) are far
more likely to pay into SS and never get any out of it.
\_ And again, this is not the fault of a biased system (SS) but
the result of a higher incidence of violent death among
young black males. If the Pres. wants to extend the life
expectancy, he should put more than lip service into No
Child Left Behind and other social services.
                 \_ the irony...
\_ As I said before, this is balanced out by the fact that
more blacks than whites are on SS disability.
\_ Two issues I have: 1. Why does SS pay disability at
all? 2. Why have SS on top of welfare, disability,
                    unemployment, and other existing programs?

1/29 I hear people saying things like "Arco is bad, Chevron is good,
Mobile gives you slightly better mileage" etc etc etc. Are there
actual studies on the different brands? Like % of impurity,
octane deviation, % of additives that differentiate one brand
        with another, etc?
\_ the only difference in brands of gasoline is the additives the
particular companies put in their fuel before sending it out to
the station. hell, they'll even sell to each other to cover for
           local shortages.
        \_ Mobil, not Mobile

1/29 How can I convert my IE favorites into an html file that I can
put on my web page? And then how to I make it accessible only
        via passwd?
\_ IE has "file -> export favorites" or something. It exports
to bookmark.htm or something. Then read up on htpasswd.
\_ And to answer your other question that somebody overwrote,
the firefox favorites (for windows) are in your profile,
which is in a hidden windows folder C:\Documents and Settings
           \username\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

1/29 I see people with all kindsa crazy prompts and colors in their
terminal that change when they log into different systems and
such. Is there some easy primer to get a running start on those
        sorts of things?

        \_ Use PS1="$ " ; export PS1 as god and Steve intended.

1/29 Any Saturday night trolls want to predict what will happen on Iraq
        election day?
\_ Lots of people will vote, some will be killed, and Iraq will
continue to be violent and occuppied by the U.S. with very little
           real change.
        \_ Probably a coup.
        \_ we'll invade iran as a distraction
        \_ Kurdish independence.
        \_ Lots of motd wankery.
                \_ We have a winner!
\_ There will be lots of polling booths and security in Shiite areas
(where ~ 80% want to vote), and not very many or no polling booths
at all in Sunni areas (where seemingly > 50% have said they will
definitely NOT vote). Why have polling booths somewhere where
people won't vote, security will be an even more incredible bitch,
and they'll probably mortar you to death anyway? -op
\_ some will vote, some will not, but it'll be run democratically
and people will slowly understand that democracy > dictatorship.
In time the terrorists will understand as well and begin to
accept democracy and appreciate what we've done for them. God Bless
\_ basically, if all the shiites vote and the sunnis do not, it's
like saying the sunnis don't want yer stinking election
and will wage war / continue the insurgency with the shiites
\_ Iraq is made up of a lot of different ethnic groups who hate each
other. My guess is that the ethnic majority Shia will win the
election, take over the assembly/congress/whatever and pass laws
that will be favourable for them while screwing everyone else
(since they got really screwed under Sadam's rule). It'll be like
the Republicans taking over the country and passing anti-abortion,
anti-gay marriage, and faith-based initiative laws and piss off
           liberals.
