4/4 Looking for motd entries prior to 8/30/03. Where to find it? Thanks.
\_ Need to write in complete sentences! How to do it? Thanks!
\_ Am needing to find goodly English writing books, how to find?

4/4/4 We're all gonna die!!!
        \_ fob alert!
\_ Are people in China freaking out today because it's 04/04/04?
           \_ we use lunar calendars.
\_ Yeah whatever. The cool thing about the numerology calendar
idiocy is how often the calendar has been arbitrarily changed
because the universe doesn't allow itself to be evenly divided
and clocked. Leap years? Leap *seconds*? 10 year gap in the
middle ages? Sheesh, as if this calendar came from God.

4/3 Set your clocks back 1 hour tonight.
\_ Funny thing. My work's buggy software saved me from missing my
church job this morning. I have a nagios monitor on a service
that checks for a random bug in our software, but only have it
notify me after 7 am. One machine tripped the bug last night.
I got the page at... 6am? OH SHIT! THAT'S RIGHT! Thank god for
           buggy code. --scotsman
        \_ Ahead. Spring forward!
\_ maybe someday this will stop pissing me off, but damn i fucking
hate daiylight savings. it's like stamp prices. i don't give a
shit whether stamps cost 0.59$ or 0.33$ i just don't want to have
to go to the fucking post office all the time to upgrade to the next
generation of stamps that's two pennies more expensive. i don't
give a shit whether the sun goes down at what the government says
is 3 pm or what the government says is 9 pm, i just don't want the
fucking hassle of dealing with this shit twice a year. I wish
stamps cost a dollar exactly and that the whole U.S. was on a single
time zone all the time. i'm ready to stick it to
the man over this one. who's with me?
\_ Suck it up, punk. If changing a clock or the changing price of
stamps gets you this riled you must be living easy.
\_ Sounds like you would like China. All one time zone. No
Daylight Saving (not savings) time. Western China is the
same time zone as Beijing. It's like San Francisco being on
the same time zone as Maine. So in the middle of winter the
sun doesn't come up till like 11am. And when you cross the
border with Afghanstan, it's a 3.5 hour time change.
\_ Daylight Savings is a valid synonym.
\_ Somebody missed their nappy nap time....
\_ uh yeah dst sucks. the stamp thing doesn't bother me as much as
the fact that they allow bulk junkmail spammers at what must be
a very cheap rate. at my apartment building there's a huge mass
of junkmail that gets thrown away every week in a big bin. Spam
sent directly to me is one thing, but the "bomb the neighborhood"
mailings piss me off. you know what else pisses me off? i could
rant about the tax system now but i should have been asleep 4
              hours ago.
\_ Yeah, that pisses me off too about the bulk snail-mail.
\_ Why? Isn't that what xntpd is for?
\_ there are many non internet enabled clocks out there.
\_ What??? What the hell are you talking about??
              \_ It was a joke.
\_ I actually HATE *STANDARD* time. I much prefer to see one extra
hour of daylight in the evening since I almost never wake early
enough to catch up the sun rise.
\_ I hate when people use PDT during standard time or PST during
daylight time, as if it makes no difference. These people
should just use PT. It may be ambiguous, but at least it won't
be wrong. I mean in places like Indiana (where part of the state
uses daylight time and part doesn't), it would seem very important
to specify D or S correctly. I wonder if the people there are as
careless about the distinction as the people everywhere else.
\_ Would you actually get confused when someone misuses this? That
seems rather silly. Have you ever seen someone use S during
the D period and actually mean it? Indiana, Arizona, or China?

4/4 I just bought some wireless LAN stuff and googled when I came home. I
came across WPA, which one of my purchase has. So is this a big loss?
With so many WEP only devices out there, is WPA or its successor
11i really going to take hold? And is WPA really any better than
WEP? (Some slash dot article said otherwise but I lack the technical
        knowledge to judge.)
\_ WPA is an interim standard. It's not really been formalized or
accepted anywhere, and most manufacturers just treat it as an
step towards 802.11i. All it really is, usually, is WEP with
key rotation (typical: 5min interval)--I haven't seen it use AES.
What's shit though is that only the station-AP unicast connections
do the key rotation--there's provision for a broadcast key, which
is still insecure. And, like with 802.11whatever, all the
administrative/network management info is still unencrypted and
unchecked. So no, it's no loss, but it's not much more than WEP
security-wise. You should _not_ rely on _any_ existing wifi
"security mechanisms" to provide real security--use ipsec over
it and it won't matter if WEP or WPA or whatever. -John
\_ It shouldn't really matter. When a new standard comes out
you should be able to upgrade your firmware to follow the
new standard, and AFAIK most WPA enabled stuff should be
            WEP backwards compatible.

4/4 I think it's REALLY cool that we have a formatd. Usually I just post
shit here without indentation and somehow it gets pretty indented.
        Whoever wrote formatd is COOOOL.
        \_ 1) formatd isn't a program. 2) i only format shit that is slightly
off but still worth reading. 3) mymom and mydad aren't merely
COOOOL. bringing me into the universe was much better than that.
           4) no, i don't touch psb's fucked up "i'm too good to bother" crap.
           5) there is no 5. 6) if you keep posting like an idiot i'll
eventually get bored of fixing your crap and put you into the psb
lazy fuck pile or just delete it if it's really bad to save the
rest of the motd from your stupid shit. if you're too lazy to
format properly you're unlikely to add anything of value to the
                \- does it handle fucked-up psb-style
                motd formating?
        \_ formatted by formatd
\_ who wrote formatd and could you please post the source
code that pretty prints motd? Thank you very much
        \_ ps -aux |grep formatd
    nobody 114 0.0 0.0 0 0 ?? DL 23Mar04 1:09.45 (formatd)
\_ formatd is a bored sysadm who has OCD
           \_ I don't have OCD.
\_ Why are you so argumentative?
\_ Why are you so overly inquisitive and pushy?

4/4 What's up with these High Speed Dial-up Internet. Is it a good
deal? Does it speed up uploads as well as downloads?
\_ AFAIK, all it is is a compression addon to whatever PPP thing
they use. Graphics/music won't be any faster, and they probably
           won't support !{Windows,Mac}.

4/4 Good frontline, annoying if you don't have broadband.
\_ Even the best system is not perfect. Tough luck.
           \_ It's Bush's fault, right?
\_ no, but it's people like bush that perpetuate this system
                   \_ So it's Bush's fault.
\_ best my ass. this is the south.
\_ Even the best system is not perfect, but ours is far
from it. This incident is a good demonstration of many
of the worst problems including: "prosecutors in robes",
DAs motivated purely by politics, an over-reliance on
obviously unreliable "eye-witness" testimony and Plea-
bargaining, which is at least as likely to result in
              false testimony as true.

4/4 Any opinions (good/bad) on
\_ I just finished and it
\_ I just finished and it
was really simple and easy. Let's you work on it whenever
you feel like it. For an extra fee I had them fedex my cert
to me. I started it on Thursday night, did some more Friday
night, finished Saturday morning. I had my cert in hand on
Monday morning and mailed it off to Court right away.
\_ I took it, it was easy. I finished it too late
and even though they say they mail your completion
certificate to your court, they mailed mine to me.
So it ended up not counting, but I don't really
blame it on them. I should not have waited until
the very last possible moment to complete it.
\_ did you know most courts offer a 10-14 day grace period?
as long as the cert says it was completed by the due date
you can still mail it in a couple days later.

4/4 With the mad cleric Mr. Sadr inciting violence, are Shiites
        turning against us?
\_ who said they were ever with us?
\_ bush people. these shiites were supposed to be overjoyed.
\_ I seem to remember right after we toppled the government, a
lot of Iraqis were basically saying "Thank you very much! Now
                 please go home."
\_ wouldn't you? we could've just gone home but the chaos
left behind would've been worse for us, them, and everyone
else. just because a few people riot and stomp around is
no reason to abandon the rest to barbarity. we'll go when
it's time not when some bomb belt wearing lunatics say so.
