2/15 Any of you BSDers gonna give up and move to Linux?
        \_ why?
           \_ http://valgrind.kde.org
\_ Silly penguin, toys are for kids.
           \_ then, what is windows?

2/15 Is there more to love than lusty impulse?
\_ They have nothing to do with each other.
\_ Would you still be capable of love if you had been fixed?
\_ There is a documented case of just such an unrequited love.
\_ If everyone acted on lusty impulse all the time,
society would fall apart. Gay marriage, adultery,
targeting unmarried 20 year olds when you are married
and in your 50's are not "counter-culture," it's
           selfishness and it destroys society.
\_ dude! who gave ashcroft a csua account?? - kane
\_ Acting solely on impulse would be bad, whether it were gay
impulse or the kind approved by your mother.
\_ last time I check, someone acted on impulse and invade
Iraq, he sure is not a Liberal nor leftist.

2/16 http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/news/archive/2004/02/1!
This is really scary. If he has the power to force people to make such
lifeless scripted statements as a Senator, what would happen if he was
        the President?
\_ Hey! Only Bush's intelligence can be questioned on the motd comrade!
           \_ Bush's what?
        \_ URL's broken.

2/16 How do I figure out which macro defines my compiler is automatically
using? I need to do some conditional compilation based on platform or
compiler (g++ on Cygwin on W2k) and I'm looking for something that
that compiler defines that other compilers do not. Is there command to
g++ that will list all of this for me?
        \_ g++ -dM -E - </dev/null
        \_ yes.

2/16 Poll, I post on motd regularly and I am a:
        dropout: ...........
        sysadm: .
        developer: .
        programmer: ...
        manager/director: .
        real estate:
        grad student: ...
        ugrad student:
\_ difference between developer and programmer?
\_ "Developer" just sounds vague and lame.
\_ Also, there are several careers that use this term,
including real estate, construction, and fundraising as
well as probably a few others.
\_ in the context of this poll, developer should be the same as
programmer. I don't know why the poll writer is distinguishing
them, probably in ACADEMIA for too long, when INDUSTRY is where
           you make the big bux.
\_ op had developer, I added "programmer" because "developer"
is such a stupid title. It's like being an "sales associate"
at a store instead of being a goddamn "clerk".
\_ do you think there's a difference between programmer and
                 software engineer?
                 \_ In a word, yes.
software developer > computer programmer > developer, coder
                  > programmer
\_ IMO, best terms to use:
software engineer > software developer > computer programmer
                  > developer, coder > programmer
(thanks for the sw engineer suggestion)
2004/2/16-17 [Politics/Domestic/Gay, Reference/Tax] UID:12276 Activity:kinda low
2/16 I totally support gay marriage. I'm single and straight but don't
have a gf, but I would like to have all the tax advantages of being
married. My roomate and I discussed it and we think it would be cool
that we sign marriage papers for the sake of tax benefits.
\_ For many couples, there's a significant tax "marriage penalty".
And are you sure you want to assume all your roommate's debts?
You get married, that's what you do.
\_ You haven't been paying attention, have you.
\_ To what? The elimination or reduction of the marriage
penalty will, at best, make being married not-a-penalty for
tax purposes. It is never better and there are no laws
coming up to make it better.
\_ Right now, it it is a tax disadvantage to be married,
if both of you are working and making decent money.
Perhaps this will change, but it has not so far, in
                    spite of Republican promises.
spite of Republican promises to fix it.
                    http://www.savewealth.com/news/9905/marriagepenalty.html
\_ If all married gay, there would be no kids to power the economy
and pay taxes. Since this would destroy our country, this
           should be discouraged.
           \_ wacky troll
\_ Our economy is doomed once the prime ingredient, cheap oil
              goes away, anyhow: http://www.peakoil.net
              \_ ASPO!

2/16 What's the name (or type) of the adaptor for converting
a PC-style computer monitor plug to one that's compatible
        with the new Apple's?
\_ Apple uses the ADC (Apple Display Connector) connector
which integrates power, dvi and usb. Most Mac's come
with a video card that supports both ADC and DVI, so
you can hook up a non-apple flat panel to a Mac. They
should also come with a DVI to VGA adapter that allows
you to hook up a VGA monitor to the DVI port.
\_ I love how you can't use Apple monitors with Apple
laptops without a $100 adapter. -Apple Fan
\_ Actually there is just one recent model that can't, and that
is the one I own. Anyway Apple monitors are more expensive
than other brand even w/o the adapter.
\_ Actually there is just one recent model that need the 100+
adapter, and that is the one I own. But anyway I wouldn't
want to buy an overpriced Apple monitor.

countries? For example, what % of the U.S. tax money goes to
defense, home, commerce, etc? How about Russia? Japan? Canada?
