1/23 Bin Laden captured? http://www.homelandsecurityus.com \_ Wow, a completely unconfirmed rumor. Of course, they might keep is secret if they captured him, for political reasons. Therefore, they MUST have captured him! \_ Can you see how this rumor formed? http://csua.org/u/5ow link:csua.org/u/5ov \_ an aspect left out of those two articles is that people traded up the dollar on the rumor, which then went back down after it was declared a joke. |

1/23 My wife heard there was a big buddhist temple in Berkeley. If any of you know of one, please let me know (Name, address). TIA! \_ She may have been talking about http://www.berkeleyzencenter.org which is right next to the infamouse "Thai Brunch," served out of another temple. You can get yummy Thai food, one block north of the Ashby BART station on Russell. Brunch is every Sunday morning, opens at 10am, runs out of food around 12:30 - brain \_ I don't know the address, but it's in the Berkeley Hills behind frat row somewhere. I used to be able to see it from my window in the co-ops. \_ Do you know the street or a nearby street? \_ somewhere around here: http://csua.org/u/5os didn't you used to be able to move the star on these things? back by CCRP, behind Prospect somewhere. \_ dude, just stfw. \_ You don't mean the Nyingma institute, do you? http://www.nyingmainstitute.com/tour.html \_ Thanks for all yer suggestions. We'll check some out today. If you know of anymore, lemme know. -op |

1/23 Any opinions on best car under $50K? I've got a BMW 3 series now I am going to keep, but not sure I want another (5 series) because a change might be nice. \_ I'm going to resist the urge to delete your post and just tell you to fuck off and die. You're welcome. \_ buy a vintage pinto. \_ What a miserable fuck you are. \_ wrx sti or a legacy b4 turbo. \_ E36 M3. Much cheaper than $50K and fun. \_ If you've got that much money to burn, how about I sell you my Corolla for $50k? \_ Keep up with clothes fashions in stead. It's a lot cheaper. \_ Why waste $50k on a car? \_ Instead of buying the Ferrari I can SAVE $50k by buying the Beamer \_ Why waste any money on a car when I can buy a beater for $1000, right? Don't tell me you spend all of your money on utilitarian things. It's okay to have a few nice things. \_ those aren't the only two alternatives. What about 20k for a car and 30k for a boat. Now you have a decent, comfortable car *and* a boat. I don't think that a 50k car is ever better by a factor of 2.5 than a 20k car in any really useful way. These choices all reflect a personal value system. In my view some value systems are simply better than others, and the kind of person who would spend 50k on a car is best summed up by the term "asshole." \_ heh, like the boss from _willard_? \_ In my value system, a boat is a waste of money (hole in the water into which you throw money - better off chartering a boat the 1x a year you use it) and $20K car is a POS. I am very glad to be rid of my Nissan and my Honda for the BMW. \_ what if i do tell you that? \_ Then you're an idiot. \_ Nothing wrong with wanting nice things, But $50k for something with a terrific depreciation rate is a bit silly. I spent $60 for a good kitchen knife by telling myself it'll last forever if i take good care of it. \_ I see. So how much to spend on a car is not silly? $1K? $2K? $20K? $40K? \_ What about leasing? I don't know anyone with a 50k plus car that actually bought it. \_ E36 M3. Much cheaper than $50K and fun. \_ Is that 900kg all carbon-fiber M3 available on the US? The CSL looks pretty cool. -John \_ E36 is the generation before the current E46. I don't think it's all carbon-fiber. \_ Why E36 M3 over E46 M3? \_ wrx sti or a legacy b4 turbo. \_ MB SLR McClaren. |

1/24 Can someone recommend a good mail client for Windows that nicely handles multiple mailboxes, each with its own outbound server (I need IMAP + TLS) hopefully besides Outcrook? Tried Opera, Mozilla, Firebird, Pegasus, none of them particularly seem to like multiple SMTP servers. -John \_ I use both Mozilla and Thunderbird w/multiple SMTP servers. They can be a little difficult to configure, because the dialog for changing server settings doesn't seem to remember more than one change at a time, but once I got it all configured I didn't have any problems. -emarkp [formatd, damnit] \_ What was wrong with my formatting? I have tabs set to 8, and I wrap at 80 lines to minimize # of lines in a post. -emarkp \_ you're going past 80. you do all the time. \_ Whatever. I'll keep an eye on it, but it seems to be working fine for me and my settings haven't changed. I'll set my wrap at 79 in case your settings are messed up. -emarkp \_ My settings? It's only your posts. I've counted my chars/line with both wc and my fingers. No one else goes over as often as you. --formatd -emarkp \_ I use both Mozilla and Thunderbird w/multiple SMTP servers. I's remembering them ok, but can't seem to figure out which one to use with my two test accounts. Meantime, postfix/cyrus-saslauthd on FreeBSD is giving me grief, so I'll have to fix that first. 1/24 How does one learn to get charisma? -engineer \_ My theory on charisma: You have a genetic glass ceiling for how \_ meaning, physical characteristics much charisma you can obtain. Most people function below this ceiling (either because it's too much work to be charismatic, or they haven't developed the knack). I think the best way is spend a lot of time around people and learn them, like you would learn a machine or a programming language. Learn what makes them tick, and what makes them happy. The way of charisma is the way of manipulating a complicated human machine. A lot of this knowledge will be subconscious and difficult to articulate, but that's how it is with lots of complex skills. \_ you're assuming he knows anything about computers or machines. \_ learning to spell first helps. nobody likes a dummy. \_ Nothing like a wise-ass comment about someone's typo that instantaneously kills charisma. If you want to attain charisma, learn how to speak in public. -williamc \_ i'm not the one trying to attain it. also, speaking well in public is only one of many parts that contribute to the overall effect. \_ In order to speak well in public one must be able to obviously communicate well. In order to communciate well one must be engaging (people are willing to listen to you in the first place). In order to be engaging one has to have charisma. Charisma is the most important factor in public speaking. Notice how charismatic individuals are elected to public office over less charismatic ones, often to the detriment of public policy. Note, I have said nothing about content, because content is very much secondary to the hoi polloi. Anyway, if you do not have it and you do not seek it, you are probably not qualified to comment on it. -williamc \_ no. it really depends on what kind of charisma you're talking about. a movie star might be described as being charismatic on screen; this means only that he's likeable and you can empathize with him. i wouldn't follow him into war though. there are other kinds of charisma for that; these usually involve conveying an aura of authority, which is often linked to physical and intellectual prowess. \_ we call that "other" form of charisma, "leadership" \_ Quaff random potions until you find the Gain Charisma one. \_ and there's that magic cloak, too! \_ ask your DM. |

1/24 I'd like to upgrade my 15 year old cordless phone which is still using 40 something megahertz. Should I get a 2.4GHz digital phone or a 2.4GHz DSS (digital code hoping) phone? Which one is more secure, has a better quality, range, etc? By the way I also have a cell phone but the quality (clarity, lag, etc) is still inferior to a land based phone. Thanks! \_ How about a 5Ghz phone, since 2.4Ghz phones have been known to interfere with 802.11b wireless routers (in case you have one)? \_ No one is listening to your boring phone calls. Security should be the last reason you choose one phone over another. \_ Just a note: frequency has little to do with quality here, or even range. Go for 900 Mhz, avoid the radiation and interference. \_ Another note: The Panasonic handsets heat up with 2.4 GHz (and probably 5 GHz). The 900 MHz one does not, and has great battery life. You probably get better range with 2.4 or 5. As far as quality, 900 is fine -- if you notice clicking about 10-20% of the time, just rock the switch to the left a few times to change to another channel. I've never heard any interfering conversations. |
