11/18 I'm using Emacs 21.X.X and it's complaining the following: "Error in
init file: Symbol's function definition is void: hilit-translate"
        What is wrong?
\_ exactly what it's saying maybe? i've not been impressed with
the default redhat 9 install. one should really customize their
           own .emacs anyway.
\_ 21.X.X? Yeesh. Kids today. Back in the day we had emacs 17.x.
We didn't have the E or the X.X. We had to have one lousy .x and
           be happy with it.
\_ Back in the days I used jove. -- !OP
\_ hah! I still use jove! If jove isn't installed, a unix
                 system isn't complete.

11/17 What is the effect of having restrictive bands around one's biceps when
        lifting things?
\_ Did you ever see "The Barbarian Brothers"? that movie rocked.
\_ what do you mean? what kind of restrictive bands? those are either
just small walkman-like radios that you can strap to your arm, or,
if around the elbow, bands for protection against elbow strain.
\_ They keep me from over flexing and destroying the world! They're
made of unobtanium forged by the Hand of God at the core of the
           Universe!
           \_ Wtf!? meds-p
\_ sigh... go away humorless little gnome.
        \_ Severe pain.

11/17 I have two linux boxes running debian. their sources.list files
are identical. on one box, I can get the kernel-image-2.4.20*
        but the other I cant. dpkg -l "*kernel-image-2.4.2*" :
        1) No packages found matching *kernel-image-2.4.2*.
        2) ii kernel-image-2.4.20 2.4.20-9 Linux kernel image for version ..
ii kernel-image-2.4.21 2.4.21-4 Linux kernel image for version ..
        What could cause this?
\_ dunno, this never happens on my windows or mac.
\_ Neither does this, uptime: up 300 days, 20:11, 230 users
\_ soda doesn't exactly do all that much hard labor though.
\_ heh. nice attempt at a troll.
\_ but it's true. what do people do on soda? read/write
some mail, nuke motd, blather on wall, maybe edit
some webpages. bfd. it's not like someone's been
compiling massive software, running mozilla, or
handling huge amounts of traffic all day for 300 days.
                       what's the load average? 0.39, 0.45, 0.40? psh.
\_ I wasn't attempting to troll. It's the truth. Both
windows and macs don't have that problem. When you
nerdlings write a system normal people can use, let us
know. You're also really dimwitted if you think a
freebsd based Mac can't run for 300+ days. Most windows
boxes can't but that's because people run as admin and
install every stupid web toy they see.
\_ How much you paid for your windows or mac OS again? or you
              pirated?
\_ Some came with systems so my effective cost is about $50.
                 Some were pirated.
\_ I had to run this command. Never had to do this before.
           dpkg --update-avail /var/lib/apt/lists/http.us.debian.org_debian_\
           dists_testing_main_binary-i386_Packages
Shouldnt' apt-get update do this? Any ideas what's broken? -op

11/17 Dean is supposed to be pro-worker/pro-union, but he wants to raise
the retirement age to 70. how is that pro-worker? -dem
\_ Well, it kinda screws the baby boomers, but in return you don't have
to raise taxes on current workers as much to pay for baby boomer's
returements. It's kinda fair in a way. The boomers paid low SS
taxes because they only had to support the previous generation.
If we want to give them the same benefits their parents got, the
gen-X and later workers will have to pay a higher SS tax than the
           boomers paid.
\_ there aren't as many genxers but there's a lot of echo boomers.
let the echo boomers pay for their parents but keep my taxes
low since all i got from the baby boomers was fucked. -genxer
\_ hmm... you like them old ladies do you?
\_ You know there could never be an age-based tax like that. The
closest you could get would be raising taxes later... which is
                 probably what will happen.
\_ Yeah I know it but I can hope. A constitutional convention
could change the rules to make it ok. "And we hereby
decree that the genxers with the help of the feeble minded
drug addled, poorly raised echo boomers shall fuck the
baby boomers who did so much damage to this country and
gave nothing in return". It could happen. I have hope.
\_ fucking old people, leaving deficits for me. i say kill off
social security. damn reagan worshipping bitches.
                    \_ Eli, is that you?
\_ reagan? what's he got to do with it?
\_ There are trillions of baby boomers. So if it screws them, how is
                he gonna get elected?
\_ He's not going to get elected anyway so it's academic.
\_ And he has a "A" rating from the NRA. Which makes him
                    easily the coolest Democrat.

11/17 Has anyone bought a new vehicle using AAA's pre-negotiated price
service (whatever it's called)? How's that price compared to the
        invoice price? Thanks.
\_ it's not that great. Go through costco instead ($500 over
invoice, I think, better than AAA), and then go to a non-
costco-participating dealer, and ask them to beat it. Worked
           for me (with Honda)
\_ How does someone negotiate the price down to the invoice price?
              Any tips? Thx.

11/17 I seem to remember a website posted once on the motd about various
salaries for various tech employees w/ different experience levels,
etc. Anyone know the URL? thanks.
        \_ From 10/27:
"Too much info to put in the motd. The whole thing is online at
           http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/content/salsurvey/"
\_ These are always way low if you've got mad skillz. There's way
too many zero skill tape changing, vb scripting, never got a
college degree losers in there to compare to your berkeley degree.
Take the survey results and add 20% or $20k, whichever is more and
you start to get into the low end of the right range.
\_ Shit I am 6 months out of college and I am making 6 digits,
*plus* I have stock options worth another $1M... oh, that's
              right, it's not 1999 anymore.
              \_ Gee, I didn't reach 6 digits until I was 8 years out of
                 college.
\_ Sigh. Idiot. Whatever a non Berkeley person is making, add
$20k or 20%, whichever is higher. Did I say 1999? Did I say
you'd make a million dollars? No. Stop putting words on the
screen I didn't write, imply, or intend. Maybe I was wrong.
Are you a Berkeley alum? You should be flipping burgers for
                 6.50/hr. Idiot.
\_ You claim that the average Berkeley grad working as
a sysadmin in The Bay Area is making 107k/yr on the low end?
And then you claim that *I* am the idiot. Keep living
                    in your fantasy world asshole.
\_ Min wage in CA is $6.75/hr.
\_ Not in Communist SF, where they are intent on driving
out small businesses with their $8.50/hr
\_ obviously you know nothing about communism.
\_ Frmr Member Spactacus Youth League, and you?
                    \_ I didn't say minimum wage. I said $6.50. He needs a
below minimum training wage until he's earned the right
to earn minimum. He has to prove himself worthy.

11/19 Has anyone heard an argument for defining marriage as being between
a man and a woman that hasn't relied on "common sense" or
"tradition"? I can't seem to find an argument that can't be traced
back to religious doctrine fairly easily.
\_ This is going to get flamed but every gay or lesbian person I've
known has been a little odd, aside from the sexual aspect. Well, ok
one of the lesbos was pretty cool. I think it's a mental thing.
\_ There's no point in flaming you. You're already on fire.
\_ Yes. The purpose of marriage is to create a stable societally
enforced and supported relationship to raise children. The benefits
to marraige are there to make it easier to raise kids because
healthy, happy, educated, well adjusted kids are a great benefit
to society. If you're not having kids society doesn't benefit
from your marriage enough to justify any benefits received.
Further more, children are better off with a mom and a dad, not two
mommies or two daddies. Those in favor of diversity should
understand that getting the multi-gender upbringing and perspective
on life is more likely to provide a child with the tools s/he needs
           to do well in life.
           \_ STOP OVERWRITING PEOPLE'S POSTS
\_ wasn't but you're going to start getting purged just for being
wrong and an idiot and casting blame in the wrong direction.
\_ Any particular reason you posted this FIVE TIMES?!
              \_ what? i didnt.
\_ Yeah, you did, somehow. I took a liberty of removing the
                    copies for you. You're welcome.
\_ no. i didn't. thanks for cleaning the multiple copies
                       for everyone, anyway.
\_ Got any evidence to support your idea that a child is
"better off" with two parents of different sex?
\_ OP wanted a reason. I provided. If you don't like the status
quo reason, it falls upon those seeking change to justify it.
\_ And if the status quo reason makes no logical sense and is
instead based on mindless tradition, it behooves the
society to embrace the change-- even grudgingly.
\_ It makes no logical sense to you. It makes lots of
sense to lots of people. If you want something
different from the status quo it is your burden to
prove that your solution is not only better but the
costs to society to make the change are worth it as
well. If the new thing were better enough society
wouldn't grudgingly change, it would embrace the new
                       thing without force.
\_ Your "reason" is irrational. Thanks for proving his point.
                    \_ I didn't provide a "reason". He asked a question which
I answered. No points made in any direction. I wasn't
                       expressing my own opinion.
\_ If the purpose of marriage is to create well-adjusted kids, then
it stands to reason that two loving parents in a committed,
monogamous relationship and equipped with an adequate income
would be better suited to help an orphaned or abandoned child
than the current system of orphanages and foster homes--
regardless of whether that couple is hetero- or homosexual.
A child raised by either two men or two women is still as likely
to receive a positive education about gender roles as any child
raised in a household with non-same-sex parents.
\_ I agree until you get to "A child raised by" at the end. How
can two women provide a child with what a man can provide?
How can two men replace a child's mother?
\_ What is it that a mother provides that a loving male
parent cannot? What is that a father provides that a
loving female parent cannot? Until we define these so-
called differences, we cannot make broad generalizations
about who can provide what to a child.
\_ A child needs a father AND a mother. They respond
differently to them, and they learn different lessons
                       from them.
\_ What lessons? How are they gender-dependent?
\_ You really think there's no difference between
men and women? Mothers and fathers? You're now
getting into areas that are so fundamental that
if you disagree it would take volumes to cover
all the basics. You're not an alien from another
world so I can't believe your reply is anything
other than a rhetorical attempt to ignore the
obvious. Saying men and women are the same is
ridiculous on it's face and no one from any part
of the political, social, or other spectrum would
                             agree with that statement.
\_ perhaps gays should start adopting the word 'civil union'
instead of marriage and guys like my dad won't get so upset. - danh
\_ My mind automatically inserted "and mom" into your comment,
              which changed its meaning immensely.
\_ c'mon, admit it, you were thinking about yermom, not his
\_ The purpose of marriage to legitimize children. Adoption - the only
way fags "reproduce" - is not the same thing.
\_ So, any childless marriage is null and void? And barren/sterile
people should not be allowed to marry? (But your point about
a non-religious argument is taken. Thank you.)
\_ In certain societies this is the case.
\_ Perhaps, but in our society?
\_ Dont' forget the lesbians, who can easily produce children
              without resorting to adoption...
\_ they can? no, they can't. they still need a man. did you
never get the birds and bees chat or take an anatomy course?
\_ Dont' forget the lesbians, who can easily produce children without
              resorting to adoption...
\_ Almost all homosexuals have mental neurosis or pathologies. Look
at the epidemiological data on disease transmission and sexual
addiction statistics. Look at SF, you have 100's bathhouses for
anonymous sex - this is an environment to bring children up in?
\_ You lie. Actually everything in your post is false. You believe
there are 100s of bathhouses in SF? You are nuts.
\_ Not only is he nuts, he's really insistent about it. He's
already deleted four responses to his drivel, and probably
\_ Not to defend bigots, but (1) there were not four deleted,
and (2) at least one was an accidental overwrite by an
                    idiot.
\_ Consider that syphillis has been virtaully eradicated in
every segment of society except one; which segment do you

11/19 A colleague just told me about his wife's home birth experience.
Gave birth at home into a water tub. No doctors present, only one
midwife. The umbilical cord was wrapped around the baby's neck
twice. But the mid-wife safely delivered the baby. If this was a
regular hospital doctors would be jumping in there ready to cut open
his wife for a C-section just so that they can get their $15K bonus
(insurance pays more for C-section, they have a financial incentive
to do so). Upper middle class white women with insurance get cut open
more than uninsured minority women. Think about that. -old fashioned
\_ The US has one of the lowest infant mortality rates in the world.
I assure you, that has nothing to do with midwifery or home
birthing techniques. It's really nice when people can dredge up
exceptions where everything went well -- but the price of failure
\_ You mean upper middle class white women with insurance are getting
goes way WAAY up when you don't have immediate access to modern

\_ Of course, she might have failed and the baby could have died. Also,
           which baby was this? 1st? 2nd? 7th?
CONTEST. And why for fuck's sake do you feel this rediculous need
to get validation from motd? People here believe in, you know,
TECHNOLOGY -- so it's kind of a hard sell if you're truly not

\_ actually, the US has a fairly high infant mortality rate:
                US: 6.75/1000
                UK: 5.28/1000
                Canada: 4.88/1000
                France: 4.37/1000
                Germany: 4.23/1000
                Japan: 3.3/1000
That's better than it was 20 years ago, but it's still probably
the highest among any of the industrialized nations. However,
