8/10 My freezer tends to collect a lot of icing around it and it gets
smaller and smaller every month till I can't use it anymore. What's
the best way to get rid of the icing? BTW it doesn't have a defrost
switch like the ones you see on newer freezers. Thanks.
\_ Get a fridge made after the 80s.
\_ It's your landlord's freezer, right? Hammer and chisel! When
it breaks, he'll buy you a new modern fridge.
\_ You've got it set too cold.
\_ Remove all food and unplug fridge. Boil water in pots. Place pots
of boiling water in freezer. Close freezer door. Wait 10 minutes.
Open freezer door. Break off ice in chunks. Reboil water and
repeat. Now you won't have to wait whole day to defrost.
\_ has anyone tried running some voltage through the freezer?

8/10 Most recent poll: 54% in favor of dumping Davis, 35% opposed. Not a
whole lot of voter passion for saving his ass.
\_ And in a month, when people come to their senses...
\_ 35% seems high to me. I guess there's a silent minority here.
\_ 35% means the support is very weak and dispassionate and thus
unlikely to bother defending anything on an aggressive forum
like the motd because they just don't care that much.
\_ And this from today's news but they don't say when the poll was
taken so you get what you pay for: 64 percent said Davis should be
removed from office, including 40 percent of Democrats.

\_ So's Gary Coleman, big deal, what's your point.
\_ Questions don't have points, they are inquiries... if someone
was a classmate of his, they might say "Ya, the dude was a big

doing the heroin look. I bumped into her at a bar/club in SF (near

she's _got_ to be our candidate.
\_ So does everyone else here.
\_ ...and none of the rest of you are running for gov.
                    Ergo, she really represents us.
\_ Dear god man, did you read her platform? She is far
                       too liberal.
\_ "Ergo" probably is, too. Remember we're not all
60 hour/week alumni. Some people on the motd are
students who haven't yet reached political maturity.
Things like legal pot seem important to them.
\_ There's almost no one on here that could represent "us".
Why? Because there is no "us". Maybe you've noticed a
few times here and there where there were some minor
political disagreements on the motd? In what way does
she represent "us"? Ergo, et al, etcetera, cum laude.
\_ "Ergo" is the only word I remember from that dumb

8/11 So I downloaded a ISO disk (Redhat). What do I do with it?
\_ Burn it to a CD. Any cd-burning software should have an option
to write an ISO image to a blank CD.
\_ turns out I need to get WinISO, that converts from
BIN to ISO. But WinISO costs $$$ :(
                   \_ WTF? Just burn them.
Download trial version of Ahead Nero. That definitely
                      burns ISOs
\_ There's a zillion freeware ISO burners and converters.
It's a standard format. obgoogle, jeeze.
\_ Don't forgot to download the second and third ISOs.
\_ no need to burn those though as you can make a boot floopy

              on your hard drive.

8/11 Mac OS X users: is there such thing as an "emulation mode" in OS X?
90% of the apps I use have Mac OS X versions. But what's keeping me
from pulling the trigger and buying an PowerBook is that 10%. I have
some legacy windows app that doesn't have OS X version. I'm wondering
if there is emulation software and how reliable is it? Thanks.
\_ are you talking MS Windows or os9? There are both. The
windows emulator costs money and supposedly runs kinda slowly on
in the 12 inch powerbook because the lack of l3 cache, but works
           pretty damn good.
\_ VirtualPC is what you want.
\_ I just went through the connectix virtual pc docs. And all
I can say is HOT DAMN! No wonder microsoft bought the rights
to their software. If this really works, I'll be buying a 17"
powerbook soon and running virtual PC to keep all my old stuff
              also running.
\_ out of curiosity what apps do you need that osX doesn't have?
\_ A lot of "viewer" programs out there are all windows only.
A couple that i use almost daily are efax viewer and winfax
\_ aren't fax files a generic format? I'd be amazed if there
wasn't a mac app to do the same thing.
\_ fax files are almost certainly TIFF, which the Mac
                      should have no problems with.
\_ Join Us! Join The Dark Side! Enter The Reality Distortion Field!
\_ We just got a G4 few weeks ago for one of our office personnel, and
the machine came with both OS X and OS 9 installed, with OS 9
running in emulation mode. But that might not be the case for a
           PowerBook. Doesn't hurt to check.
\_ yes, osx has an emulate os9 mode.
