5/31 I had another hard drive failure recently, making this 2 drives over 2 years that have failed in under a year. (And they weren't even IBM deathstars) Is there any independent website logging failures to keep manufacturers honest about their MTBFs? \_ Could be your environment. Have you checked your powersupply lately?_ \_ Could be your environment. Have you checked your powersupply lately? \_ SARS? \_ You using a battery backup? I think that helps make your power better too. I've had two hd crashes / slow death before, but not in the 5 years since I started using battery backups. \_ what brand do you use? \_ could be the heat, get extra fans to blow on them. \_ what drives are they? |

5/31 Anybody know where to find old version of programs like Kazaa and Real Player? Their respective web sites only have the latest version but the latest version always have bloatware or spyware. I just want to be able to play some .rm files and d/l some music without some 100 meg monster program. Yes, I've searched google, but it has too many results to sift through. There must be a site that archives some of this stuff somewhere. Thanks. \_ STFW http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=real \_ STFW for Kazaa Lite \_ real has old version on the web. \_ For Kazaa, does anyone tried giFT ? \_ No, I prefer outright thEFT. |

5/31 "Tom Devlin, director of UC Berkeley's career center, said that 2 out of 3 of the university's 6,000 graduating seniors are expected to be working full time six months after graduating." http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2003/05/31/MN254655.DTL \_ Retail, burger flipping, and car washing count. The other third are in prison on drug and prostitution charges. \_ Oh, come on, it's not that bad. I had to get a job as a lookout four a few months, but now I've got a good position in a major cartel as a runner, and things are looking good. \_ Hey that's great! I was in the back in the chemlab naked for the first 6 months before they let me be a courier! What's the secret to your success in our field? \_ I put caltech on my resume instead of cal, and told them i'd lived in the dorm that got busted for making smack. it also helps to blow the pilots, since they have the strongest connections to the higher-ups in colombia. \_ Thanks for the resume tip. I'll switch to Caltech too! \_ Nasty little men like you always get their comeuppance. \_ you're an idiot. im going places. by xmas ill be one of the top 10 guys in columbia. |

5/31 Who here has worked at JPL? What's it like there? \_ Think Matrix... \_ So everyone at JPL over-philosophises everything, wears dark glasses indoors, has super powers that allow them to ignore the laws of physics but don't use them, and looks better on a computer screen than in real life? Where do I sign up?! \_ Not Half Life? The Administrator is pretty evil. \_ Talked to couple Cal Tech Geeks working in colaboration with JPL. They told me that a lot of interesting projects got axed in Bush's tax plan. Make sure whatever you are interested in gets the budget for it. \_ I work at JPL. What do you want to know? E-mail me. --dim |
