5/24 How would one solve the following equation?
        Sigma i=1 to log n of (2^i * log 2^i)?
I just need hints to get started. I'm not sure if I can actually
use the formula n*(n+1)/2. Please help me get started. I'm not
looking for an answer, just hints, THANKS!
        \_ Hint 1. Rewrite log 2^i as i*(log 2)
Hint 2. Find a closed formula for
                   1 + x + x^2 + ... +x^k
           Hint 3. On request.
                \_ Ok so I tried hint 2, (2*1)+(4*2)+(8*3)+...+nlog n.
                   Now what?
\_ Try again; we want a closed formula for
                       1 + x + x^2 + ... + x^k, i.e, a formula
                       without the "..."
                        \_ uh, (x^(i+1)+1)/2?
                           \_ Nope.
        \_ isn't this in first year calculus/math1a?

5/24 Are human beings the only know creatures that can masterbate?
\_ Have you never seen bonobo videos on Discovery or PBS?
           Masturbatory fiends, those bonobos.
\_ never seen dogs hump inanimate objects?
\_ the only true statement i've ever heard that goes
"human beings are the only known creature that..."
            goes like this...
Is a heinlein quote which i can't find, (somebody
please tell me how it goes) that basically says.
"animals when caged together at too high a population
density, go crazy, humans are the only animal that
does this to itself." You can figure the answer to
the above question, and most like it, if you simply
realize that NOTHING seperates man from other animals
            except by degree.

5/24 Stupid problem and hints deleted. Learn to think independently.
\_ you just deleted one of the most valuable thing on motd.
\_ I found it in the archives. Yawn.
\_ How do you search the archives?
                   \_ Archived at
                      \_ Oh you hacker, you.
\_ Yeah, information wants to be free mother fucker!
                 \_ Information doesn't want anything.
\_ I checked the archives, too. It wasn't valuable.
\_ can't mathematica handle problems like that now?
it seems like every time i do a sum or integral like
that with a pen and paper some punk kid makes fun of
                    me for not using mathematica.
\_ Damn kids! Get off my lawn!
\_ yes, it does. Smash their nose in next time. It works.

5/24 MMC does the Matrix: Reloaded. The MMC studiously avoided all
pre-viewing hype so the ending, such as it is, was a bit of a
surprise and a disappointment. M:R was enjoyable as a simple
high action flick although the interminable dance scene and
Morpheus' endless speeches on his favorite and only topic were
very heavy handed. Go for the action, ignore the rest. --MMC
\_ fuck off. you are just as idiotic as real critics, except you
don't get paid to do it. just fuck off. really.
\_ This news is two weeks old. Who cares?

\_ LOL... i guess you too, were old enough to remember Cal
           and its glory days.

5/25 Getting a new PC, $500 range. Is it a better deal to buy from
Dell, Circuit City, or PC Club, etc?
        \_ Dude, get a Dell.
\_ Is it because it's more reliable, has better customer service,
better deal for the money, or just cuz they have a funny
\_ too bad, someone erased my post
\_ you think the commercials are funny?
\_ I think she is using this definition of "funny":
                        dict -
                        4: experiencing odd bodily sensations;
\_ Throwing up or feeling queasy isn't odd. It is
                           unpleasant but not odd.
