4/30 I know there are some grad students here. How much do you end up
paying per year in Union dues, if you are on a unionized campus?
Has anyone found a way to get out of paying the dues if they don't
want to be in or support the union? How much to the union people
interfere in your everyday work? Any informaion, prefereably
with links is appreciated. We are trying to stop a union on our campus.
                -ecchang
\_Just go up to the Union rep and demand your dues back if
they've been garnished. This Union crap is garbage since
grad students in different majors have nothing in common with
one another. Why would an MBA student want to join a union?
\_ There's dental plans and dental plans. My fiance, a UCB
\_ The union at UC Berkeley is responsible for the grad students
finally getting a dental plan. Does that help?
\_ Are dental plans ever actually worth the hassle of finding a
doctor in the system just for a tiny cut in price?
\_ almost all dentists are in Delta.
\_ There's dental plans and dental plans. My fiancee, a UCB
\_ There's dental plans and dental plans. My fiance, a UCB
grad student, can now afford dental work where before
                 she couldn't. YMMV.
\_ "Tiny cut" is 50% or more?
\_ In general, liberal arts programs/students are poor and want
unions more than those in the engineering disciplines
\_ To some degree that treatment is deliberate. America already
has plenty of history and sociology PhD's. So we tend to
treat the PhD students pretty poorly ... reduces demand
(and there's still too many of them). Engineering and hard
sciences, on the other hand, can find jobs elsewhere so have
to be treated well, AND we need more of them. At most schools
RA/TA salaries for eng/sci are much higher (and eng/sci grad
students usually have a much lower teaching load over their
unions more than those in the engineering disciplines
              graduate careers).

4/30 Initially when we went into Somalia, the people loved the US troops.
We brought them food and they were fed. After the situation stabilized
the Somalis turned against us. And culminated by dragging a dead US
soldiers through the streets. Beware that history might repeat
        itself.
\_ Tell that to George W. "I look to history, but only selectively"
           Bush.
\_ Wow, that's a really cool rewrite of history. I like how you saw
a hollywood movie made from a book and then decided how the world
works from there and can be applied to all other cases the same way.
I'm glad you don't work in foreign affairs. Keeping hacking java.
Stick with what you know, you'll do better.
\_ Yea, like I said, this looks like another Palestine, except a few
           times larger.
\_ Somalia was never stablized. Warlords ruled most of the country.
The US went in to cover food aid and then got mixed up in nation
building. Right now, Afghanistan is a closer match but without
constant media showing Somalia's millions of starving. Iraq will
be MUCH different from both. I agree with the Palestine analogy.
\_ Only difference is that unlike Israel, US civilians are not
at the scene, and hence not as exposed. Hopefully US military
personnel fend for themselves better. Otherwise, it can get
              ugly.

4/30 Where do you go to get car regular maintainance? The dealers are
charging a lot of money. But do you trust a non-dealer?
\_ Sure I trust my non-dealer, and more than I do the dealer.
But there is value to sticking with the dealer until the end
           of the warranty period.
\_ As a Ford owner I can unfortunately honestly say you should
           a) never buy a Ford no matter how good a deal it looked like at
              the time and
\_ what did you buy, and what location? (randomly curious,
also had bad luck with Ford in the past)

*have* seen Ford dealership stories on the net on their
different scams and had the local PoS try one on me
exactly as described on the net. Just don't buy a Ford.
                      \_ Any links?
           b) if you're stupid enough to buy a Ford like me, then *never*
bring it in to the dealer. Ford dealers charge waaaaaay too
much and they don't always do the work they claimed to have
charged you hundreds of dollars for.
I trust my non-dealer. Ford almost killed me when they didn't
bother to rebolt my transmission back in place properly. What
do you think would've happened if it dropped while I was doing 65?
[btw, I've got a Ford for sale if anyone wants a good used car]
\_ ask dbushong his ford matrix test drive story.
\_ uh, i think you're thinking of the ford focus?
\_ Depends on the car. Dealer is usually more expensive, but also
more inclined to court your business (i.e. if they mess up they
will try harder to correct it). They also have the best tools,
manuals, and such. That doesn't mean they do a better job, though.
If it is a newer car you care about and wish to keep, then take
it to the dealer. Otherwise, find a good mechanic you trust and
           take it there. --dim
