4/7 The 'dict' command always seems to format stuff very nicely
from the commadn line, but when I envoke it from code or a
shell script I get no formatting... couldn't find anything on
the man page. is there an env var I should set to get this to
        work? thanks.
\_ it could be using isatty() to check the output is on a terminal

4/7 The sun is really bad for the skin. I'm considering using a
parasol whenever I'm under the sun like in a parking lot
walking to my car. Using this "sun umbrellas" seems more
popular in Asia than here. What do you think of a guy who uses
        parasols? -good skin guy
\_ Sorry to sound dogmatic on this, but men with parasols are effeminate
no matter how you turn it. Use sunblock and wear a hat if you're
worried. I saw a nice place called Paul's Hat Works at 6128
Geary in SF. Or invest in a decent lightweight linen/cotton
           summer suit. That's stylish. -John

\_ I try sun block or a panama hat before resorting to a sun
parasol (unless you are interested in getting picked up by
gay guys). Another trick is to comb your hair with a little
bit of coconut oil. It keeps you head cool all day.
\_ Dude. It's from the parking lot to the car. Unless the ozone
layer has disappeared or the US has gone unilateral nookuler,
           you're really kinda pathetic.

behavior for someone who calls himself the "good skin guy".
           Parasol away, dude.

4/7 Yeah Arnett... you were fired for telling the truth. Why don't
you ask the interviewer to look out his windows now and see
        Stars and Stripes.
\_ This is all an illusion. The Americans are in a quagmire
in all parts of the country. They aren't 100km from
Baghdad. They are stuck in the Baghdad airport. They have
been beaten at the airport and send running. Hundreds of
Americans were killed. They commit suicide against the
walls of Baghdad and we encourage them to do so. There are
no WMD in Iraq. Chemical Ali is still alive. Saddam is
still in complete control. We have used only one third of
our might. This shall be the mother of all battles! Peter
Arnett is a quality journalist who reports the truth, not
an American hating ultra leftist. And now you know the

4/7 Getting on Gandhi's case! Next thing you know, you guys will
be blasting Martin Luther King Jr. Why don't we slag off FDR,
JFK, Eisenhower, and Lincoln while we're at it? Damn, I mean,
HAS their been a leader that wasn't completely full of shit
and out to lunch? Its no wonder that we don't have great
leaders anymore - they would never survive the cynicism of
        today.
\_ What's wrong with questioning leaders of any sort? And
while we're at it, Lincoln was a Republican who used
slavery as an excuse to attack his southern neighbors.
Actually mu favorite is JFK. I'd like to know what JFK did
that made him such a great leader. He brought us to the
edge of nuclear hell and back? He banged a few hot chicks?
           Gave some good speeches? What?
\_ MLK was naive as a leader and a plagiarist. FDR was an
autocrat. JFK had mafia connections and took a lot of rash,
dangerous decisions. Ike was militarily a waffler. Hitler
liked dogs and children. Is this a new thing, not being
allowed to criticize leadership icons? Or do you just
love adhering to your grammar-school-inculated picture of a
           black-and-white-world? -John
\_ Hitler was also vegetarian and did not drink or smoke.
He was also not a philanderer.
\_ FDR was the worst President ever - he is primarily
responsible for the destruction of this republic. What
were JFK's accomplishments? Assisinating Diem and setting
the stage for an inept civilian run war, the disaster in
the Bay of Pigs, etc. Yes, MLK was a inveterate plagiarist
and a hardcore Marxist, but you do have to give him credit
for standing up against that which was morally
           reprehensible, when few others would.

the same could be said for New Zealand, who is also opposed

4/5 Hey I missed out on that Ghandi thing but anyway, if he really
thought peace at all costs was better than a few deaths in the
name of freedom and liberty how come he lead so many of his
own people to take actions against the British which got them
        killed? What's up with that?
\_ Gandhi was not opposed to deaths, but he thought that
people should have the choice of dying for a cause, not
have that choice made form them by external agents. E.g.,
re the Jews circa WWII, he did not that that they should
accept their fate but that they should engage in incidents
of collective suicide so as to alert the world to their
           plight. See Orwell on Gandhi.
\_ Gandhi was a complete ass. India would have had freedom
much earlier and on much better terms had he put aside his
own political ambitions and supported Bose and
others. Instead of doing what was best for India and her
people, he did what was best for Gandhi and relegated India
to fifty plus years of socialist poverty and despair from
which it is only now beginning to rise.
\_ 90-column freeper twink strikes again
\_ Bose was a map collaborator. He's rotting in his
smoking ruins in a jungle somewhere.
\_ He's most likely dead. Bose may have picked the
wrong sides, but he was fighting to free India
for the sake of freedom rather than for revenge.
Under Bose there would have been no partition.
\_ He's most likely dead (he would be ~ 105 yrs old
this year). Bose may have picked the wrong allies,
but at least he was fighting to free India to
establish freedom for her citizens rather than
                   fasting for revenge.
\_ Who's Bose? Can someone educate me? A google search
              turned up mostly speakers.
              \_ google. bose india independence.
              \_ Subhas Chandra Bose.
\_ Is Gandhi's no violence principles successful because
the threat people like Bose poses is an unappetizing
           alternative for the Brits?
of the underlying threat people like Bose poses?
2003/4/7 [Recreation/Dating] UID:28021 Activity:nil
4/5 In today's society, how do Asians and "Americans" view dating
/ sex / marriages / etc. between a couple with the same last
name? This question is directed at a couple who are not known
to be related by blood by at least three generations and that
along the line, no sons took on the mothers' last names to
        preserve their names.
\_ Actually, I've never given any thought to that. As a white
guy, I'd probably consider having the same last name as a
small plus-- no dealing with a name change after marriage.
Anyway, aren't there tests you're supposed to take prior to
marriage to check that sort of thing out?
\_ Blood test are not required in every state. And one does
not have to be married to beget children.
        \_ Coincidence.
\_ They should immediately break up to save themselves from a
           miserable and painful future.
\_ with general apathy, as usual. "who cares?"
\_ For Chinese, at least, having same lastname is rather
common. For those who are more traditional, we tend to ask
where is their ancestorial home down to the county level.
The general rule of thumb is that if two are from same
ancestorial home and having same lastname, then, there
might be a concern. For the not-so-traditional minded, they
           probably have sex anyway.
\_ "2 Wongs make it white".
\_ you forget the word "can"
\- um assuming this is a serious question: in theory
in hinduism, people with certain last names [like
banerjee] cannot get married to one another because
all banerjees are of the same "gotra" [which roughly
means they are all descended from the same relig
figure] however some last names are really titles
and dont imply family relations [like the name
"ray"]. on the other hand in this day an age there
is a way to finesse this/loophole to get around
                  this. --psb
\_ Two people from the same Gothra aren't necessarily
related. There is some historical evidence that
implies that the term is derived from the ancient
practice of requiring students to pay teachers in
cattle (go). Students who had the same teachers
ended up in the same gothra.
