4/3 Pre-invasion, a UN study predicted 500k civilian injuries and almost
a million refugees. Anyone know what the current estimates are?

4/3 Tea Time in Soda Hall!
Join the CS 162 Hackers for a cup of tea this evening in soda hall.
We'll be in and around 2nd/3rd floor soda. email me if you have
        questions. -dans
        \_ i hope there's boba
\_ Tea Time a success. Fun had by all. What's a boba?
\_ If you have to ask, you don't know!
              \_ Indeed.

4/4 Are there any national awards given out to office mates whose
annoying hapits really set them apart from the crowd? I have
someone in mind I'd like to nominate for an award.
\_ What's he or she doing? Flicking boogers at you?
\_ -laptop has volume all the way up, with lot's of error noises
                made frequently
-chair squeeks loudly, and he fidgets constantly
-severe cologne use in small, enclosed space should be illegal
-loud shlurping noises made while drinking soda, which he
               does constantly
\_ A problem solved by headphones won't earn him anything.
\_ if it weren't for the cologne, i would ask if your officemate
                 is chinese.
\_ I stil haven't figured out which is worse:
-the guy next to me with the *major* BO problem
-or the other guy with the strong cologne
On the one hand, BO is pretty bad, but at least it's not
making my eyes water from the cologne.
\_ oh, yeah, i forgot to mention that the cologne isn't this
guy's first chemical attack. he also decided to wash his
desk with a large quantity of un-diluted degreasing
compound at one point; that was actually far worse.
\_ The guy next to me plays House Music very loudly. How much of,
"dut! dut! dut! dut!" do you think a guy can stand before losing it?

4/3 Oz teens shot in school crossbow attack
        http://csua.org/u/c53
        \_ Ban crossbows!
\_ If you make crossbows criminal, only criminals
                   will use crossbows.
                   \_ True enough.
\_ I don't know what legitimate reason there is for someone
           to own a crossbow.
\_ You can take my crossbow when you pry it from my
                   cold dead fingers.
\_ Guess I'm joining the NCA now.
\_ Support waiting periods for crossbows!
\_ Somehow this seems vaugely appropriate:
              http://www.hacktivismo.com/public/tfiles/crossbows2crypto.txt
\_ If only they'd properly locked up the crossbows, this
           kind of thing wouldn't happen.
\_ gee, 5 responses by the same 90-column idiot. -tom
\_ you seem overly concerned about the motd in a possibly
unhealthy way. have you discussed this with a professional?

4/3 Please recommend a DSL provider on the East Bay other than PacBell
that provides a consistent low-packet loss, low-latency network
connectivity to the campus net, preferably with a static IP address
        option.
\_ PacBell sucks loads of ass. Try Speakeasy. A number of sodans
           use it, including me. -scotsman
\_ Which part of these other DSL companies' connection is their
own equipment, and how much is resold SBC's connetions?
\_ The local circuit to your ISP is with your local phone
carrier, so SBC/PacBell. Then Speakeasy is typically
resold over Covad. I like Speakeasy, but other friends
of mine have gone straight to Covad. --sowings
\_ I have had good results with PacBell.
\_ Stay away from PacBell. PacBell is evil and does not concern
itself with customer satisfaction. I would tell stories but
it would take too long to explain.
\_ Write it up in your directory and point us to it.
\_ I agree. When I first got DSL, it took them nearly three months
to figure out why my connection kept dying. They finally realized
they set the max bandwidth too high (my location was the max
distance from the station) and finally lowered my speed to 768kps
\_ well, a recent one was my friend being offered a "free trial" for
DSL (already had cable modem), so friend agrees, gets package in
mail, installs, sees that speed sucks ass, we're talking 12KB/s
or something, anyway tries to cancel service and then the fun
begins. Basically they are not honoring the trial and charging
some $200 cancel fee, and being insulting on the telephone, etc.

        and times?
        \_ 9:00 pm, 1200 9th Street in SF.
\_ Anyone know if it's playing in Berkeley and what the times are?

Fired from radio station for pro-Bush, pro-troops, anti-NPR stand.
\_ insulting public radio all day when your show is on
a public radio station is pretty lame- danh
           \_ so is insulting "big gub'mint" on a taxpayer-supported
machine, where you got your education at the best public
university in the country. but that doesn't seem to stop
              people. -tom
\_ How about a government supported by our taxes but not
elected by us? One that's fomenting terrorism abroad
and holding innocent people as terrorists at home?
\_ what about it? That seems consistent with support of
public education, if only from a fiscal perspective. -tom
\_ It was reported in the link that he did not insult public
radio per se, he insulted the content of public radio.
Public radio need not be bland and un-opinionated, and it
need not utter only the opinion of one side.

4/4 Associated Press article on Yahoo news: http://csua.org/u/c59
"Al-Jazeera is based in the Persian Gulf state of Qatar. It has
received funding by Qatar's government but is an unusually independent
        voice in the Arab world."
Does this give Al-Jazeera more credibility?
\_ do you have a point?
\_ I meant people have been saying that Al Jazeera is biased towards
Iraq. Now that AP calls it independent, maybe it is not as
              biased as we think?
the Iraq side. Now that AP calls it independent, maybe it is not
              as biased as we think?
\_ No. It doesn't say what you think it says. It says it is an
'unusually independent voice in the Arab world' which means
it doesn't necessary spout off the noise from the government
that funds it, but isn't necessarily unbiased. So, no, it
doesn't come across any more neutral than it did before you
                 mis-read your own posting.
\_ Of course they're biased. Al-Jazeera is based in an Arab
country and their primary audience are Arabs.
\_ So our US media are all biased too?
\_ All media is biased. Some is more biased than others.
\_ More than what? NPR? Fox News?
           \_ Than the motd.
\_ The motd is the final authority on all things.
\_ No it isn't. (hah! now you go into a Kirkian Logic Loop!)

4/4 Is there a good site that goes through the pro's and con's of
DLT vs. DAT vs. AIT vs. LTO ? I'm trying to backup about 50GB of data?
obGoogle shows mostly people trying to sell me their warez.
\_ I don't think UCLink could find any good backup links on google
either... so I guess they just decided not to do backups.
\_ DAT is horrendous. DLT is OK, but tends to be very heat-sensitive
and not as reliable in the long term. AIT has been very solid
for us. I've not used LTO. -tom
