1/9 Is there a program that keeps diary? I know any text editor would suffice but I would something which has a nice way of letting me go to a particular day's entry etc. \_ ED! ED is the STANDARD diary editor! \_ Dunno about windows, but for FreeBSD/linux there's a gtk app that does something like this, and can publish to a weblog too. The name escapes me, but you can find it in the misc directory of the ports tree. \_ It would take you about 5 mins to write such a progam in c \_ It would take you about 5 mins to write such a program in c or perl. \_ There are so many things you could do yourself.... \_ i have noticed that not every member of the csua can code. i believe this is by design. \_ so there's always someone around to mock? \_ I like MacJournal for OS X. \_ Thanks. What about something that does flowcharts? \_ OmniGaffle is supposed to be pretty good, but its not free. |

1/9 I need an archive/revision-control system that keep the repository, which is left a relative public system, encrypted. CVS does not seem to do that. What is an (free/open-source) alternative? \_ Do you mean "encrypted on disk" or "requires encrypted transmission"? CVS does the latter; you need to set CVS_RSH=ssh and do some more config on the server (there are howtos online). For the former, maybe a file system that encrypts data to disk? \_ I mean that the (CVSROOT) repository is encrypted on disk. I don't need heavy weight encryption. It is to thwart opportunistic voyeur. -- OP \_ rot13. \_ rot26! \_ chmod 600 your cvsroot |

1/9 Anyone know of a good DSL provider in berkeley? I'm currently using DirectTV and they're shutting down soon. I need a month-to-month contract as I'm graduating this semester. \_ Try <DEAD>dslextereme.com<DEAD>. \_ I second. \_ dslextreme, DSi, sonic. I am personally moving to cyberonic because I was sold out by their upload speed. They offer 1500/768Kbps for 50/month with a static IP. \_ DTV is shutting down? I just got mine! \_ DirectTV DSL is shutting down. DirectTV Sat. is going strong. \_ Speakeasy is very good, I've had no problems, they offer shell accounts, They give back to the community (e.g. hosting rpmfind for free) and most importantly: if you sign up they will give me money: http://www.speakeasy.net/refer/173586 -crebbs |

1/9 What means "My country, right or wrong"? Is it "America: Love it or leave it" or "It's still my country, even though I'm under no obligation to support the current administration"? \_ Proof is left up to the reader. \_ Neither. \_ Neither, but closer to the first. It means: "As for me, I say, Whether it is right or wrong 'It's still my country', so It is my duty to support it". I was never a big fan of the quote even when I was a big Patriot. \_ Thank you. The reason I ask is that I happen to be proud of the general idea of America and the potential of its democratic institutions even though I thoroughly oppose the current administration. It would appear, then, that this slogan carries too many contrary connotations to be useful to me. --op \_ Yeah, we'd be much better off with a socialist like Gore in office. You obviously need a slogan more like, "from each according to his ability, to each according to his desire and degree of slack laziness". Get a job, kid. \_ Ah, the flamer answers. Got a job, bitch. You need to get a moral compass that doesn't point to your wallet. |

1/9 AAA is raising my homeowner's insurance premium up by $200+ to $1040 a year. I tried to switch to State Farm but got turned down because I had a claim in the last 3 years. Am I screwed until the 3 year passes? Anybody know of another company that offers HO insurance and doesn't check or doesn't mind if I had a previous claim? \_ Good luck buddy. Insurance companies are now looking at the bottom line to keep their stockholders happy. If you've made a claim and they haven't dropped you, consider yourself lucky. \_ What's the point of having insurance if you can never claim it? Then they're just taking your money and offering nothing in return. \_ yes. smart for them huh? the only reason is for the really huge claims. \_ Somewhat along the subject: anyone know of a cheap renter's insurance company? \_ California is so incredibly anti-insurance company and anti-business in general, you're lucky to have any insurance at this point. I only got mine because my parents were personal friends of the guy making the decision. \_ The last couple of big CA disasters really slapped around the insurance companies. The new threat during the current housing boom is mold. Think near total loss for a relatively new house. VERY bad for insurance. They hiding until they can find a way around the mold problem. \_ It's nothing to do with that. It's more about the non existent interest rates and stock market gains they can make on your premium dollars. My motorcycle policy renewal had an eightfold increase requested, so I had to shop around for another carrier. \_ Damn. I have Allstate with no claims. I pay about $400/year. My house is worth more than the median in LA. $1040?! Damn. --dim \_ Ok, I am getting shafted for good. I called around to several other insurance companies and they all gave me the same story. Had a claim in the last 3 years? Fuck off. I strongly advice everybody NOT to file a claim unless it's for some big loss. I've gotten AAA to lower it by $200 by choosing the $1000 deductible option. That's still around $800 a year. FUCK! My only consolation is that my wife is self-employeed and keeps a home office so this premium is deductable as a business expense. -OP \_ Raise your deductible even more. You won't want to make a claim unless there's many thousands in damage anyway. Try $2500. This isn't your car where you want a $500 deductible. You shouldn't use this insurance much and when you *really* need it you won't mind the extra $1500. --dim \_ Insurance is meant to prevent you from financial ruin with a loss, it's not meant as a home warranty. Keep your deductables high, and don't claim anything short of a major loss and you will be fine. \_ Look in the Yellow Pages for a local "Insurance Broker", they can shop around some of the smaller insurance companies to get you a better price/any coverage since you have a claim. That's what I had to do when buying my house since there previous owner had made a claim a couple years ago. --randal |

1/9 I started a new job and all the computers here use Windows XP. I've never used it before and I vaguely remember people talking about how it 'spies' on you etc. Anything I should watch out for or settings I should change? \_ Check the archives. There was a decent article posted some time ago that you might find helpful/informative. -mice \_ Nyet. Is good for you and USA. Helps stamp out terrorist, drug dealer, and child pornography too. \_ You're an idiot. By trivialising real issues you are actually hurting the cause of freedom in this country. 1/9 What tax software do you love and what do you hate? I am returning TurboTax because of the issues mentioned here a few days ago and I want to know what to replace it with. Anybody like/dislike H&RBLock TaxCut? It offers the same things as TurboTax and is 15$ cheaper. \_ Update: Intuit refunded me the purchase with a single email request. -op \_ I have been using TurboTax for a few years with mixed feelings. Last year I tried TaxCut. I ran into some problems (unfortunately, I forgot what), and went back to TurboTax. \_ I'v used TurboTax for the last 4 years. And I won't be buying another Intuit product until they remove "product activation". Some have suggested http://www.taxact.com elsewhere--it's free at least. \_ Just downloaded it to give a try. It's pretty straightforward but keeps bugging me to buy their other software. Whuddya want fer nuthin, I suppose. \_ My dad has been using taxcut for several years. He likes the program and hasn't run into any problems with it. --ranga \_ there was an SJ Mercury article on people complaining about the new Turbo Tax. |

1/9 The Bush White House has an "opinion line"for you to call. So, if you oppose the proposed war in Iraq, give a call. The line only accepts calls from 9-5 EST., Monday thru Friday. Just call the White House at 202-456-1111. A machine will detain you for only a moment then a pleasant operator will thank you for saying, "I oppose, or I approve." Or you will be given a chance to leave a 40 seconds recorded message. It will only take minutes. Note that the weekends are closed for calls. Bush has said that he wants to know what the American people are thinking. Let him know . Time is running out. Then please send this e-mail message to five other people right away. Tell them what you think. 1 phone call ! equals 10-20 people who didn't call. Pass it on to friends. \_ "Hey Dick, some hippy dippy lima bean says DONT BOMB IRAQ. HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA" \_ Can I call to oppose his bad tax bill? \_ What's bad about it? *You* don't get other people's money? \_ 1. I don't like giving my money to rich people as child tax credit. 2. Tax break for dividend is dumb, according to WSJ article. Should give dividend paying corporation the tax break. 3. Average American get tax break of $265 not $1000+ as Bush said. 4. Most middle-income Americans savings are in 401k, IRAs, etc., which essentially still have to pay dividend taxes. \_ And when you call to say you oppose it, will they send Special Forces to your house to detain you as an enemy combatant in the name of National Security? Because they can now. \_ If you are not with us, you are with the terrorists. \_ Is that who my co-workers are? I thought they looked suspicious. |

1/9 when a girl says you're not ambitious enough does that mean you're not rich enough? you don't have a big house? you don't have the right degrees? right car? what does that mean? \_ It means that you have no purpose in life, no plan for the future, no thoughts on improving yourself. \_ a girl is quite capable of asking "are you rich enough" It usually comes out as "what kind of car do you drive?" \_ you asked about this once before. It means that you're a FUCKING LOSER. \_ It means you do not have a strong enough desire for success or achievement. I.e., you play too much EverQuest instead of writing that killer app. \_ It means she's a gold digging bitch. Move on, enjoy life with a real girl. |

1/09 I've been told that wireless LAN doesn't work as well vertically (up two flights of stairs) as it does horizontally. This seems odd. \_ it totally depends on the antenna used... for most sold in stores, yes that is correct. -shac \_ Floors are built more solidly than walls. \_ electromagnetic radiation is stronger going up then side to side \_ Is it necessary to enable WEP if I'm already using SSH? \_ No. But I use it anyway. |
