12/24 Am i doing something wrong or does IE have serious issues with
transparency. My images all look right on mozilla.
\_ IE blows transparent or translucent PNG's.
What kind of images are you working with?

12/24 Finally, an attempt at necessary theatre. Why can't the SF theatre
        community do stuff like this:
        http://csua.org/u/739
\_ Too creative and no one in the US has the gumption to do it.
\_ Um, maybe you can clarify for me because I'm not quite clear
on how this is either creative or ballsy.
\_ If you tried something like this in the US, your theatre
                 would get firebobmed.
                 would get firebombed.
\_ oh please, no one would give a shit, really. get over
your "i hate america" thing and join reality. americans
are more than used to the 'arts community' being stupid
and tasteless in an effort to get noticed.
\_ why do you put arts community in quotes? Do you
not believe that it actually involves arts? Or do
you not think it's an actual community?
\_ I always put it in quotes whenever anyone refers to
the "xyz community". It implies unity and a measure
                          of conformity that doesn't exist.
\_ You sound like a wise man. Take heed of God's wisdom:
"In the mouth of the foolish is a rod of pride: but
the lips of the wise shall preserve them."
                          Proverbs 14:3
\_ You've never left the state, have you? What did you
do come straight from Temple in Moscow to here? Go
                       back to russia, jew.
\_ You sound like a wise man. Take heed of God's
wisdom: "In the mouth of the foolish is a rod of
pride: but the lips of the wise shall preserve
                          them." Proverbs 14:3
\_ I love the bible quotes. You just pirate the
                             bible software thing off usenet?
\_ Because the SF theater community isn't completely f*cked up.
2002/12/25-26 [Computer/Networking, Computer/SW/OS/Windows] UID:26905 Activity:high
12/24 Is there a decent firewall package for Windows XP? The built in
firewall (XP Pro) doesn't seem to have the ability to do simple
things like 'Only allow packets coming from these IP's...'.
Alternatively, is there an interface to the built in firewall that
is designed for non-morons? Yes, yes, I know using a Windows box
for firewalling is laughable. I have an XP box on an open network,
and I would like to put SOME measure of protection on it.
\_ are you looking for something to protect 1 machine (yours) or
something to act as a gateway for your office/company? for just
1 machine you can't do much better than ZoneAlarm http://www.zonelabs.com
           -shac
\_ One machine. I'll check out ZoneAlarm. Thanks. -OP
\_ Hope you dont play any games on that machine...
\_ Why not? I've used zone alarm for a long time and use the
same machine for games. It isn't an issue. Stop trying
                    to FUD a good product.
\_ Why don't we leave it to the sodan game designers to
                       judge.
\_ What do you need? Is a $50 linksys sufficient? That's what I did
(even though I only have 1 PC).
\_ Yeah, I was thinking software based, but, now that you mention
it, a $50 linksys may suffice. Model number? That said, if
others have suggestions, please speak up. I'd like to know
what other options may be available. -OP
\_ Go to amazon check out what they have from linksys and
netgear. i got the MR814 (wireless) for $45 after rebate.
like i said before, i'm using it as a hardware based
                 "ZoneAlarm".
\_ zone alarm is free. the 'pro' version costs some trivial amount
like $30 or $40 or something.
           \_ hi sky!
\_ No. I'm not sky. I'm a astisfied user of the zone alarm
\_ Winxp pro comes with a firewall. Turn it on.
\_ read the post again... he says he's using it.
software. I couldn't pick sky out of a 2 person line up.
        \_ Kerio Personal Firewall. http://www.kerio.com

12/25 any sodans been to the "Varekai" cirque de soleil? is it a good
        show?
\_ Yes - it was much better than Dralion, not as good as mystere
though. There were a few acts that were *really* impressive,
and the clowns were less annoying than usual in CDS. Let me
know if you're interested in the soundtrack (although the
actual CD is pretty weird this time around, and not that much
like the show itself (even more than usual...)) - mds
\_ No. Went to Drillion(sp?) which *sucked* in an extra special
           sucking way.
\_ Dralion. Cirque de Soleil is middling compared to a number
of other circuses. Find Cirque Baroque.
\_ It's dralion you fat bloated fuck.
\_ You of course noticed the "(sp?)" which indicates I was aware
I didn't know how to spell it. Thanks for your comments and
                 opinion. Express yourself.
                 \_ Fookoffandye(sp?)!
\_ It is the kind of show you bring your parents to.

12/25 "A couple of years ago, the biggest American corporations would have
considered it risky to outsource mission-critical work to India,
but it is now becoming a common-sense proposition." --Bill Gates
Keep fighting those H1-B visas, guys; maybe you'll be able to beat
the ocean back with a broom. -tom
\_ I've worked on multiple projects that involve people
in India. The only "mission-critical" work that you
can have them reliably do is stuff like QA (monkey
push the button style) or minor sysadmin type work.
If you have one of these types of jobs then maybe
                   you should be worried.
\_ it's unclear to me. do you support H1-B's or are you saying that
           we're losing an important battle?
\_ Fighting H1-B's is just encouraging companies to move their
              whole operation to India. -tom
\_ "Turn around, bend over, relax and think of Bill Gates."
\_ As someone who has never worked in industry you wouldn't
understand that offshore projects are 99% doomed to utter
failure. The successful ones only work with *rock* solid
contracts, *top notch* American managers, and lots of travel
and daily communication between the indians and the Americans
running the project. I've been there, done that, etc. They
can try it and after multiple multi million dollar losses and
dead projects, they'll abandon india for serious work. They
can keep the monkey QA jobs. Any company moving critical
work to india is doomed. Since this started with a BG quote,
let me ask this, "how much critical work has MS moved to
                 india?" Thought so.
                 \_ I won't bother responding to your head-in-the-sand
comments, but just will point out that I worked in
                    industry for 8 years. -tom
\_ Did you ever graduate, tom?
\_ No, but how is that relevant? -tom
\_ You seem bitter. It might be having an negative
                             impact on your perspective.
\_ I've never been a matriculated student at
Cal, so I don't know why I'd be bitter for
                                not graduating. -tom
\_ Who said Cal had anything to do with it?
                                   That's a weak rhetorical dodge.
\_ You won't bother responding because you'd just open
yourself to being shot down again as we'd find out
you've never been associated with any sort of over
seas projects therefore your 'experience' is
meaningless in this context. My comments are not head
in the sand. They are the reality of having personally
witnessed multiple overseas projects waste 10's of
millions of dollars to produce *nothing* but welfare
for incompetent and veru sub-par indian coder monkeys.
\_ I think Tom counts grovelling at L&S as "industry"
\_ I worked for GE for 8 years. -tom
\_ How DARE you counter baseless ad hominem with
                                facts! -mice
\_ He still hasn't claimed any personal
knowledge of how overseas projects really
work or having worked with such people
himself. "X many years in industry" does
not mean he knows anything at all about the
topic here which is that overseas projects
                                   are 99% fucked.
\_ I'd be remiss not to comment that most projects are doomed
from the beginning, offshore or not. However I disagree
that fighting H1-Bs is pointless. There is a case against
having workers being exploited locally. There are many
companies that don't farm out work offshore. People who
currently live in America have the right to fight to keep
                    their jobs by opposing H1-Bs.
