12/9 Why is Clarence Thomas hated? Because he was selected only because he was the only black person Bush could find who was stupid enough to buy the conservative agenda, and Bush didn't seem to mind that he was completely unqualified for the position, and is a complete idiot to boot. \_ Because the Democrats are Playah Hatahs. \_ Wow, this is perhaps the most racist statement I've ever seen. Why do you think one's skin color determines political party or idealogy? -emarkp \_ why're you so quick to jump up and cry racism? A strict reading of the OP claims that black persons are smart. Certainly smarter than most conservatives, many of whom are white.. \_ the point is that you'd have to be an idiot to be both a black person and a conservative; intelligent black people know that guys named Bush are not their friends. |

12/9 "Suit Against Cheney Task Force Dismissed" http://csua.org/u/691 "...... was an unprecedented act that raised serious separation-of -powers issues between the executive and legislative branches of government." An issue deeper than separation of church and state and affirmitive action. \_ dbushong: can you set up your URL-shortener to include the domain name in the shortened URL? something like link:csua.org/u/yahoo.com/691 would be helpful. In this case I was interested in the article, but it sounded like it might be just another freeper link. \_ or at least post where the shortener actually rediercts to so we can gauge whether a link is work-safe before finding out the hard way... \_ you mean goatsex flashing all over your screen would be a problem? you must not work for the same porno e-mag as me. \_ freeper links are simply stories linked from other news sites. |

12/9 why does my posts about my friend's wife keep getting deleted? Do you have an axe to grind? Why keep changing 'wife' to 'duck'? \_ Liberals will stop at nothing to avoid discussion of these kinds of things. \_ "Duck" is much funnier than "wife", and you're a total duckhead loser-troll. |

12/9 Story on Blum at http://www.nytimes.com/2002/12/10/science/physical/10COMP.html Question - why is Blum "Professor Emeritus" of the CS dept when in fact he was happy enticed from Berkeley and is now ensconced at CMU with a full and productive lab? \_ Hey man, like what a traitor! I can't believe that! I'm just like ya know totally stunned and completely bummed! And like he ya know stole an emerity thingy from us! Man! \_Who said anything about him being a traitor? Just wondering why he has this title, which means "Retired but retaining an honorary title corresponding to that held immediately before retirement" when he's anything but retired. \_ From Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary (1913) [web1913]: Emeritus \E*mer"i*tus\, a. [L., having served out his time, p. p. of emerere, emereri, to obtain by service, serve out one's term; e out + merere, mereri, to merit, earn, serve.] Honorably discharged from the performance of public duty on account of age, infirmity, or __long and faithful services__; -- said of an officer of a college or pastor of a church. \_ enticed by his wife, no less. \_ yet another reason why marriage is evil. - bdg fan #3 |

12/10 is there a way to get hotmail to automatically empty the "Trash Can" folder, so that it doesn't take up space? \_ try using pine instead. \_ no. think about it. why would hotmail want to provide that functionality? \_ why not? what good does it do MS to not have an auto-purge option for mail you never want to see? \_ I thought it empties automatically every couple of days... do you want it to empty faster than that? |

12/10 What program do you use to backup your *nix system at home? Needs to be compatible with OS X. \_ If you have another box somewhere you can use as a backup server, use rsync. -John \_ rsync doesn't handle hfs+ files by default. \_ dump \_ Does 10.2's dump work properly with resource forks? The version of dump in older versions had problems. \_ I dd my /etc/* to another disk. The rest is crap. \_ OS X doesn't use /etc for most of its configs. You need to grab the netinfo stuff from /var. \_ The only effective soln for OS X that I've seen is something called Carbon Copy Cloner: http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html You could try the hacked version of cp that apple includes in the dev tools or a version of gnu tar that is hfs+ aware (search on google for it). If you have trouble with the hfs+ patch, I can roll you a binary. \_ The original question was modified to say it's OSX. If I had an OSX system I wouldn't backup anything. It'd all be crap. \_ Thanks for the answers. It is surprising that people notice this tiny question in between huge threads. I have just located hfstar and hfspax on the net. I still want to know if there is a one stop solution for backuping to CD-R(W), or I just have to tar it then burn it to CD. \_ CCC (mentioned above) will be easier to use than hfspax and hfstar. Just use disk util to make a dmg and use CCC to back up to that dmg, then you can use apple script to have the finder (or toast) burn a cd for you. \_ Retrospect. I don't know of a free one that handles HFS+ files properly. -tom \_ You might find the Distributed Internet Backup System (DIBS) interesting. DIBS lets you backup your data by sending it to other people on the Internet (and in return you backup their data). For more details, see ~emin/public_html/source_code/dibs/index.html. -emin \_ http://oceanstore.cs.berkeley.edu |

12/10 when I had an ultra 1 I made a two headed display out of it by installing a cgsix framebuffer (grabbed from another ultra 1). is it possible to do the same with an ultra 5? The graphics card seems to be built into the motherboard. So I can't rip it off from another workstation. Anybody made a two monitor system out of ultra 5 or 10? Thanks. \_ You have to get a compatible PCI VGA card for your Ultra5, either PGX32 or PGX64 should do fine. You can pick up used PGX32s on ebay for about $100, \_ We had a Ultra with 12 heads thanks to the magic of PCI expansion chassis. Arranged all in a row logically, you got a workout moving the mouse from one end to the other. |
