5/28 How bad is the 101 between Redwood City and Santa Clara?
\_ Depends on time and direction. Generally it gets bad going
south in the afternoons around Great America Parkway. Going
north in the afternoons is not bad until about Palo Alto
because of the Dumbarton. In the mornings, reverse what I
           just said.
\_ It's hell, either way. There are some really really bad spots,
but also some stretches (both directions, morning or afternoon)
where there's not much traffic so it's not bad the whole way.
Not just dumbarton and GA Parkway but also Mt.View, 237,85
can be bad during certain times of day/direction.
Then again, thousands do it everyday, so you can survive.
        \_ all car commuting sucks.

5/27 so what's the final word on splitting infinitives. is it still
not considered gramatically correct, or is that just an
        antiquated rule?
\_ Go ahead and split your infinitives if you think it makes the
sentence sound better. There is no longer any rule against it,
though given a choice, it is better to avoid doing that.
\_ It doesn't gain anything stylistically, and it's really NOT
THAT HARD. If it "sounds wrong," it's because your ear is
trained "wrong". I'm all for the democratic spirit, but
without a standard of language democracy is impossible.
\_ go back to france, you useless fucking snob.
                  \_ I concur.
\_ no longer any rule against it? source?
\_ "...to boldly go where no man has gone before..."
                 \_ nice.
\_ Yes, I use Star Trek as my guide to English grammar.
                       \_ "I spell nife with an 'n'"
                          \_ "I love *you* but I *don't* love *you*"
"But we are the same in all ways"

\- hello, is there a different meaning between "the potato
was not peeled, and the carrot was" and "the potato was
unpeeled, and the carrot was"? pls dont tell me how to
state either "state" more clearly ... I'm asking do those
two statements respresent the same or different states
of the world. ok tnx. --psb
                    \_ no.
\_ they're different. the latter says both the potato and
                       carrot are unpeeled.
\_ no, actually the former says that.
\_ okay, I suppose that the first form COULD be
be interpreted either way, but how can the
second form be interpreted as the carrot being
                              peeled?
\_ look, I already answered when I simply said,
"no" and then you pedants have to get all
                                 pedantic about it. stop now.

5/28 please help me name my Big Black Dildo! i've decided that
"Big Black" just isn't personalized enough, and it needs a
real name before i dress it up in cute doll clothes and give
it its own webpage. what should i call it? -lila

\_ yeah, as if it's as good as Lockheed's Kh-12 builtin Sunnyvale for
           the US
\_ you are forgetting that 1/6th of Israelis are Muslim or Christian,
pay taxes, vote, and have representation in parliment. This comment
is about the same as saying 'Christians wage war...' etc with the US
           in Afganistan or elswhere.
\_ neither the US or afghanistan were founded on the premise of a
state for those of a certain religion. Israel was founded on such
           a premise.
\_ The US wasn't founded on the premises of native Indian nations
              of certain religion(s)?

5/28 Why would I "buy Solaris" instead of getting the free version?
        http://wwws.sun.com/software/solaris/get.html
Do I need to pay the extra $200 to keep my support?
It looks like I need to "buy" Solaris only if I have multiple CPU's.
        Am I missing anything?
        \_ Say what?
\_ It looks like you have to purchase a media kit and licenses
separately. There are several media kits that differ by the amount
of included printed documentation, value-added software, languages
CDs, etc. I just ordered a Solaris 8 02/02 media kit with all
software but no printed documentation for $75 and Solaris 9 FCS
media kit for $95. Now, if you need to run it on multiprocessor
machines, add the cost of license on top of that. As for the "free"
version, it only includes the Solaris OS and no value added
software. May be this is exactly what you need. Solaris 8 media
kit includes some useful freebies like the iPLanet directory server
with a license for up to 200,000 directory entries. Note that
Solaris 9 ISOs are still not up for a free download..
\_ I think that you also get the vol mgr with the paid version
\_ That was up to Solaris 7. Disksuite packages for Solaris 8 were
included on the second Solaris software CD, although, hidden in
a directory suspiciously called "EA". As of Solaris 9, the vol
manager has been integrated into the OS, so you shouldn't even
need to deal separate packages any more.

5/28 regarding slit infinitives: In writing, it is better not to split
infinitives. In speech, do whatever the fuck you want. Once you
master the rule, in writing, feel free to do whatever your writer's
heart wants. However, most beginner writers don't know the rule to
begin with: that splitting infinitives is poor writing style,
rather than any hard or fast grammar rule.
