5/14 Cool! The motd has no freeper rants, two or more stalkers, strip club
recommendations and guys looking for nookie in Fremont. I feel like I've
        come back home!

5/14 where's a good place to get action in fremont?
\_ HAHAHHAHAHHHH!... oy... fremont and action in the same sentence...
\_ are you stalking geordan too? maybe we could get together at the
           hub. --geordan stalker #23
\_ I don't know what bothers me more, the looking for action
in Fremont bit or... no, it's definitely the looking for
              action in Fremont part. -geordan

5/14 anyone know where I can learn about the "rip up and retry"
algorithm for circuit board routing? haven't yet found a
web page that describes it; they all only list it as a feature
as a part of software applications.

5/14 I forgot, is there some special action that needs to be taken to
have AP scores sent to colleges, or do they just get sent
automatically? This is for a highschool friend of mine that
        wants help. Thanks.
\_ I seem to recall that when you sign up for the test, you list the
schools you're sending the score to, like the SAT. But I'm not
           sure.
\_ I was just looking into this for my sister... you should be able
to find a pretty informative FAQ on the college board's AP website
(or ETS or something) just google it. It had all the info about
           cancelling and sending scores, etc.

5/13 ucla ee guy, did you get into USC? I applied to their PhD
but was offered their MS program. I declined, how about you?
\_ I got into MS. I didn't apply to PhD, mostly because a
USC prof. who wrote me a letter of rec told me that it
wasn't worth my time to do a PhD right now.
\_ PhD is rarely financially sound. Having that
said I'm surprised that he gave you that advise.
Maybe he thinks that you're not a PhD material.
                   \_ Frankly I don't think I'm PhD material, but
some of my ex-bosses (Stanford Profs.) think
I could easily do it. Anyway, the USC prof.
advice was based on purely financial
considerations (I have some ISO options that
would lapse if I went on an extended loa which
would be required for a PhD but not a Masters).
\_ so where are you going?

5/14 The (12,8) FEC hamming code has the following 4 correcting bits:
        P1 = sum(D1,D2,D4,D5,D7) mod 2
        P2 = sum(D1,D2,D6,D7) mod 2
        P3 = sum(D2,D3,D4,D8) mod 2
        P4 = sum(D5,D6,D7,D8) mod 2.

For those of you who don't normally read the meeting minutes, you
should read them this time, the "pizza incident" is one of the
funniest things to happen at a meeting in many years.
\_ I'm curious about what happened. Did the guy steal the pizza
because he's an asshole type or was he more like a poor starving
           student type?
\_ I think "dumbass" has to be considered here.
        \_ Where's the minutes? Thanks.
\_ I second the motion for op to post the minutes.

5/14 What's a war bond, how does it work, and how come there is no more?
\_ it was a treasury(?) bond sold during wartime. i'm sure you can
find old terms on google. it is no more because there is no war.
there is only unilateral executive action.
\_ On a related note, you can buy I and EE bonds online using your
           cash rebate credit cards.
\_ Don't think so. If they are, it might be considered a "cash
advance." You'll get dinged for that.
\_ FAQ for I bond says this is not the case. In fact,
unless you want to go purchase the bonds at auction,
or pay a broker a commission, you must purchase with
a credit card.I have done this and not had a problem.

5/14 Does "hiring freeze" mean no headcount increase, or no hiring for
replacement even when someone leaves the company?
\_ Both. At least in my company, it was the latter.
\_ I'm guessing it depends on what position leaves. If it's
a chief sysop or something, refill, otherwise, no?
           \_ mmm... reduction by attrition...

5/14 Anybody have a backyard pool? I don't use it often enough and it's
a major expense. I'm considering making it non-functional for 1
year or more. Draining the water and stopping the pumps, etc. This
procedure have to be reversible though. When I sell my house a few
years down the road I want to start it up again. Is that even
        possible?
        Thanks. -frustrated pool owner
\_ sell your house. install linux. Seriously though, houses are a
pain in the ass. Do you spend your vacation at Home Depot? HAHAHA

           \_ ride bike
\_ The short answer is yes. What kind of a pool is it? If it is a
concrete pool then this is easy. If it is a rubber lined pool you
have to be worried about the lining coming loose and it may be hard
to put back in and get wrinkles. (you can always pay someone to
\_ I only have a hot tub but no pool. Draining it wastes all the
reinstall your liner if you have this issue, though it isn't that
hard.) Also, with a rubber lined pool without water you probably
want to keep it covered when it is dry. I don't know anything about
above the ground pools, but i'm sure they're easy too. -crebbs
\_ it's a concrete in-ground pool. Do I need to take any special
precautions on the skimmer or the various pumps? Draining the
pool and shutting the machines off is easy. But I'm worried
about starting the thing up again. I definitely want the pool
to be usable in 2 or more years. Thanks.
\_ obviously you don't skateboard, or you'd know what to do
with it. you'd better take precautions to keep skaters
away after you drain it if it has a decent transition,
or people will sneak in to skate it.
\_ Now, some of you might think the above reply is joke,
but my boss had the same thing. Teenagers snuck into
his backyard and were using his drained-pool. My boss
had it filled with cement(they were just finishing up
when I visited, so he told me his story then). My co-
worker says actually it's a cover for his burying a
a dead body in it and normally you'd think that was a joke
but not if you knew my boss, you might not think so.
                    \_ i wasn't joking. if i knew where this guy's house
                       was, i'd skate it myself.
\_ I only have a jacuzzi but no pool. Draining it wastes all the
water (unless you can re-use the water to irrigate your lawn or a
nearby park, for example.) Re-filling with tap water also costs
you $2.18 per 1000 galloon in Alameda county. Just two more things
           to consider.
\_ yum. super-chlorinated water on your lawn?
