5/4 Online petition to rename LOTR pt2 the Two Towers to
        "something less offensive":
        http://www.petitiononline.com/twotower
\_ this is one of the stupidist things i've seen in a long time.
\_ "I think a good alternate title would be 'Saruman's Axis of Evil'"
\_ Geez, you people are such wimps these days. Yes, Tolkien
and the director are obviously referring to WTC. Get a life.
\_ yeah I think we should also have a petition against the San
Antonio Spurs, so that their star players are simply called
"Duncan and Robinson" instead of the "Twin Towers"
\_ wow, tolkien fan telling someone to get a life. now that's
              rich.
\_ Uh, I don't think it's a serious petition. Have you seen the
              signatures?
\_ I'm not going to bother reading the link but its gotta be a
                 joke.
\_ If you think "its gotta be a joke", you have a lot to
learn about how stupid people can be. Obviously most of
the signers are not serious, but the original poster?
I wouldn't bet my first born one way or the other. What i
i want to know is what all the "false entry voided"s said.
\_ "they have no sensitivity, i wont even let my two twin kids
stand next to each other out of respect for 9/11"

5/4 Every nuclear weapon in the US arsenal was designed and tested by
the UC. Under the Bush Administration, how much more destruction
        will the UC manage?

Speakers: Andrew Page - N. California political director,
California Peace Action Inez Sunwoo - student organizer,

\_ Oh no! What do we do? Go back to the stoneage and gather food right?
Dumbasses. Get your head out of your ass, you can't stop progress.
Oh and by the by.. just FYI there has NEVER been an "arms"reduction
treaty that reduces the number of WARHEADS, just the launchers. So I
hope you sleep better knowing those numbers Bush is floating around
of 1k-2k warheads just means operational launchers and warheads.
\_ Stupid peacenik. If not for the "bomb" we'd all be speaking
russian right now (at least those of us who weren't stuck in
           a siberian gulag).
\_ "peacenik"... "we'd all be speaking russian right now"...
              The irony. -geordan
\_ I can answer your question right now without all the idiotic
propaganda. Under the Bush administration, there will be just as
much nuclear destruction managed by UC as under all previous
administrations combined. That is to say: none. Perhaps you were
too busy with your most recently acquired bowl to notice but there
hasn't been any nuclear missiles launched on this planet. Ever.
The sum total destruction of all nuclear missiles on this planet is
zero. So, when can we hook up, share a bowl, go 420 and feel the
           good vibes we'll get from this teach-in? I love a good teach-in.
You know why? Easy chicks. Just go slack jawed and repeat all the
crap they spew (just like ass kissing your profs) and you're in. I
wonder if Valerie Kao is a hottie, or maybe Tara or Veronica could
           use a good fucking.
\_ why don't you ask her? her email is right there. You up for
              it stud?
\_ so, without attacking the assumption that we NEED to have nuclear
weapons development and testing managed by someone, wouldn't it be
better to have it be a more publicly accountable public institution
like the UC than some shady defense contractor? Whats so wrong
with UC managing the development labs?
\_ also, theres's alot of great basic research at lbl and llnl
that gets done under the guise of weapons research. i think
your average congressman is dumb enough to believe that
the ALS is somehow going to be used as a weapon one day.
in reality, this basic research will lead to technology
that will allow the American economy to be strong and to
maintain our standard of living. if calling it weapons research
is the only way to get the morons in congress to pay for
future American prosperity, so be it.

5/4 Any recommendations for DSL service providers? (southside Berkeley)
\_ AT&T has done well by me for Cable modem service for the last
year and a half... even that ridiculous switch of providers thing
that they went through went off without a hitch.
\_ ATT has non-deterministic quality. Ask the VP.
\_ Directv is not bad. The cost and bandwidth are the same as PacBell
except that you get a static IP. I had to power-cycle the gateway
once a week the last few month. Other than that, it mostly works
           fine.
\_ "other than having to power the gateway once a week" it works
fine. Or maybe we could say, "other than all the lengthy
unpredictable, unexplainable, and repeated downtime, high
latency, low bandwidth, and dropped connections it works fine".
\_ Very few companies give you static ip at the $50/month price you
can get from <DEAD>directtvdsl.com<DEAD>. They usually have lower rates for the
           first few months as well.

5/5 I was in Berkeley last Thursday and tried to park on southside
and about 75% of the parking meters were broken. WTF? is this
a recent thing? is it something everybody knows about and
ignores? -alum who hadn't been to southside in a while
\_ I've been told that people break them on purpose on occasion
to get free parking. It is nice for me, because if I drive to
karate I have to be there for a bit more than two hours, but
mostly before the meters are enforced, which means you pay
for time you don't have to, and have to come out to put more money
in or hope the metermaids miss the few uncovered minutes. </rant>
\_ Free parking? If you park at a broken meter you get ticketed.
I've been there and done that. --dim

5/4 Attorney General Edwin Meese III explained why the Supreme Court's
Miranda decision (holding that subjects have a right to remain
silent and have a lawyer present during questioning) is unnecessary:
"You don't have many suspects who are innocent of a crime. That's
contradictory. If a person is innocent of a crime, then he is not a
        suspect."

Between 1950 and 1952, a bored weatherman, stationed north of Hudson
Bay, left a monument that neither government nor time can eradicate.
Using a bulldozer abandoned by the Air Force, he spent two years and
great effort pushing boulders into a single word.

It can be seen from 10,000 feet, silhouetted against the snow.
Government officials exchanged memos full of circumlocutions (no Latin
equivalent exists) but failed to word an appropriation bill for the
destruction of this cairn, that wouldn't alert the press and embarrass
both Parliament and Party.

It stands today, a monument to human spirit. If life exists on other
planets, this may be the first message received from us.

\_ Does anyone know of a backup source for this? Where did it
           originate?
