4/24 On Windows platform, how do I capture the text from a command prompt window (another program is running there)? This is to help maintain a very old system that I don't have the option of rewriting. I promise after this I'll get a Real (TM) Operating System. \_ Get a Mac and start getting some real work done. \_ if you can run the command prompt window from a telnet session into the windows box (i.e. see seattle labs' remoteNT product), you can capture that text and operate on it with the likes of perl and/or expect. -ERic \_ I still have the code for that we used at various not-to-be-named companies. \_ do you mean copy and paste? \_ (1) Right click on title bar --> Edit --> Mark (2) Highlight the text (3) Right click on title bar --> Edit --> Copy \_ If the Old Windows Application runs in a command/dos shell, can you make it redirect it's output to a file or is it interactive? 4/24 If I have two T1's to two ISPs and want to do load balancing between the ISPs do I need to use BGP (and have an AS#?) \_ No, this is not strictly necessary. That said, there are other other advantages. The main one is that by getting your own ASN and having a BGP capable router, you can purchase your own block of IP address space and be multi-homed. If you are multi-homed, and one of your ISPs has a catastrophic failure (read: goes out of business, shuts all connectivity down), you don't drop off the net, and you can easily replace the dead ISP. \_ Ok, well, our ISP "prohibits" us from getting an ASN. What does that mean? Well, basically, they are forcing us to use a static route to them. \_ Uh, tell your ISP to go stick there head in a pig. This sounds like a lame ploy to force you into staying their customer. Since you're already planning on getting another ISP (for your second T1), make sure they are amenable to your plans to eventually be multi-homed. Get the second T1 up, tell your original ISP to shove it, replace the first T1, and voila, multi-homed goodness. \_ What ISP is this? |

4/25 Is innocent flirting considered cheating? At work, if I'm talking to a pretty woman (single or married) I tend to make eye contact and smile as we speak. Some women would smile back and maybe toss her hair or giggle if I'm joking about something. It's harmless flirting really. Anything wrong with this? -flirty guy :-) \_ If you have to ask the question... \_ This isn't flirting. It's normal social interaction, you pathetic loser. \_ man troll no manual entry for troll. \_ No. Physical contact or overtly sexual talk is crossing the line. \_ No 'line' has been crossed until buttons pop and there's a search for condoms. \_ Nothing. If your gf/wife/whatever is upset by this then she's got some serious self esteem issues. Your only issue is choosing your gf/wife/etc poorly. That's not even real flirting. \_ yeah but flirting leads to late night coffee and dinner and before you know it both of you may get naked. It's like marijuana, it's a stepping stone to the hardcore drugs \_ Nonsense. You want him to robotically ignore his female coworkers and get labelled queer? Bad career move. \_ so if you flirt then you will end up doing speedballs? \_ Did this really happen or are you playing Sims Hot Date? \_ maybe you should find someone else you totally are happy with \_ maybe you're in fantasy land. some light flirting doesn't mean he's unhappy. it means he's a normal healthy male. the idea that once you're with someone you suddenly become blind to the rest of the world or there's something wrong with your current relationship is the source of many young stupid women's pointless unhappyness and needless misery. \_ Like Cindy Margolis or Aria Giovanni. \_ If I dated a supermodel, I cheat on her just to be able to say that I was man enough to cheat on a supermodel. -tjb \_ "The day you stop looking is THE DAY YOU DIE." - al pacino \_ Scent of a Woman (1992) |

4/24 http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2002/04/25/MN186211.DTL Gubnor Davis talks about reparations for blacks, chinese and mexicans. Guess who didn't get a single word of mention but was treated *much* worse by this country? \_ I agree, Denis Leary has been oppressed for far too long. \_ This is a GREAT solution to the upcoming deficit he created with expensive power contracts. \_ Other Asians? \_ Think 'reservation' and not the 5 star kind. \_ Oh! The native Americans, right? \_ If you are speaking of american indians, reparations in many many different shapes and forms are in process, or at least more than you might guess. The efforts still need lots of help, though. Check out California Indian Legal Services (http://www.calindian.org and the Native American Rights Fund (http://www.narf.org for two of the primary movers. A site for news is <DEAD>www.indianz.com<DEAD> They need money, lawyers and engineering support. This is closely related to what I do for a living. Ask if you want to know more. I'm currently helping out a newly "recognized" tribe that is being given land in trust in and around Death Valley. -- ulysses \_ What does any of this have to do with the displaced Native Americans all across this and other states? Does any of this even remotely make up for entirely wiping out many tribes and killing millions of others and taking their land? \_ I've lost money at their casinos. Doesn't that count? \_ No. Very little money from casinos goes to help the average Native American. Most of it is concentrated in a few tiny tribes. Most of the tribes in California were put in such incredibly barren and out of the way areas that a business of any sort is economically impossible. \_ Sure, as far as I'm concerned. After all, it is the casinos that are why Davis probably didn't mention the indians. He has been quite public in his efforts to limit the expansion of indian casinos. Nevada's gambling kingpins are getting ready to megafund a ballot initiative to all but strip the casinos completely from the indians. Stay tuned. -- ulysses \_ Yeah, this is good. So the Mob is going to take another shot at the casinos so Davis can bring in more taxes from Mob run casinos after outlawing the Indian ones and this is why he didn't mention the Native Americans? Either they're doing ok with casinos or they're not. If they're going to get stripped of even that much then they have nothing. Either way they should be mentioned and deserve reparations as much as anyone. By saying they have casinos and therefore don't require reparations is like saying it was ok to kill the Jews in Germany because today they have Israel and are doing fine. Doing ok or not today has nothing to do with crimes committed in the past which continue to this very day. |

4/25 ucla ee guy, did you get anything housing info with your acceptance letter? I'm mailing mine in soon to see if I can get into one of those grad student dorms. Otherwise I'm going to go down there in july and find a place. BTW, money isn't a big issue for me since my company will most likely pick up the tab regardless of where I go. The problem is the number of hours I'd have to work. I don't want to spend to many hours working since I won't be able to study and learn properly. At stanford, I'd have to work 25 hrs/wk to get full tuition reimbursement. If I go to UCLA, its less than 10 hrs/wk, which is much easier (no critical customer bugs or action items get assigned to an engineer who is 10 hrs/wk or less, but 25 hrs/wk is practically full time at more companies). - ucla ee guy \_ go to ucla. You're not going to be able to work 25 hrs/wk at Stanford. Despite what people say classes there are not THAT easy (I've taken a few). Sure the grades are inflated, but you still have to work pretty hard. \_ What makes you say UCLA classes are any easier than Stanford classes? \_ the author did not make such statement, nor did he imply it. Perhaps he assumed that 25hrs/wk would have a negative effect on his school work hence it would be better to go to ucla. \_ what's the cost of UCLA Master's? \_ the same as any other public school. \_ much cheaper than Stanfurd. |

4/25 UCLA ee guy, I'm the UCLA cs guy. I got a brilliant idea on how to get each other's email without being intercepted by the motd jerks. You have your blue "UCLA Graduate Student Housing Options 2001-02" sheet? Please post your login here. \_ there are lots of bored, loneley, horney guys here and yet women post their logins repeatedly. the harassment can't be that bad. you're being a paranoid idiot. \_ Ok: 17,3,28,31,17,17@csua. - ucla ee guy \_ 5,8,44,354,21,22,84@csua \_ 5=d, 8=s, 21=i, 22=n > cat /etc/passwd | grep '^ds..in' | cut -f 1 -d ":" [No output] \_ How does this prevent other people who also have the blue sheet from decoding the login? \_25,14,18,26,26,21,25@csua \_ You're a whack. Just post your login. \_ just post an ad on craigslist in "Men Seeking Men" \_ yeah, stop being a dweeb and post your damn login. oh wait-- if you do, I might mail bomb you out of jealousy... better not. \_ Why dont you just post yours w/o waiting for ee guy?
