10/21 Jam Echelon Day!
\_ Do you reallly believe the NSA cares about you? Send out
hundreds of emails with the keywords BOMB KILL PRESIDENT or
whatever and see what happens - nothing!
\_ What is that movie with Gene Hackman called? "Enemy of the State"
maybe? According to him in that movie, if you have a phone
conversation and say the words "Alah", "Bomb" and "President",
          you're nailed.
\_ oh no! the NSA will read my hardrive! wait a muinute.. they
paid for this hardrive! -ARO researcher
\_ What does Jam Echelon Day mean?
\_ I believe it is an international rock competition.

10/22 Anybody plant orchids? I have one and the roots keep growing
upward and sticking out of the pot from above. Is this normal?
Usually a plant's roots grow downward and out through the drain holes
if it's rootbound. But this orchid is different. Thanks.
\_ I have a potted orchid that I bought at that flower stand on
Telegraph and Haste. One or two of the roots are growing up
over the pot (its planted in these woodchip things) and it
seems to be doing fine. The flower guy said this was normal.
\_ Most orchids are epiphytic, which means that their roots like
exposure to air rather than soil. In nature, they are often found
growing on the trunks of tall trees. The behavior you describe is
normal. Orchids aren't hard to grow, but don't treat them like
you would any other plant. Check out http://www.orchidweb.com for
           more info. --dim

\_ Oh right, I forgot, Clinton is up there with (maybe
above) Washington, Lincoln and Jefferson. Hillary for
                   President.

10/22 Any recommendations for a super quiet powersupply/case combo? I
just can't get to sleep at night with my current setup.
\_ Cases don't make noise. PS do.
\_ PSs don't make noise; the fans do. and HDDs. and CD/DVD drives.
and anything else mechanical. and then if the case is poorly
              constructed, it can rattle ...
\_ [again] Your fan is integrated into your PS. Your CD/DVD,
HD and other mechanical things should be idle and thus not
making significant noise at night. Cases don't rattle if
there's no mechanical action to make them rattle and just
how the hell cheap is your case anyway? Read the original
question: this is for night time (idle time) noise reduction.

10/22 Does flu shot prevent common cold? I guess it probably doesn't, but
I'm just checking. I'm thinking about whether or not I should get a
        flu shot. Thx.
        \_ Is this a joke?
\_ Just in case it's not, "no, it won't help."
\_ Thanks. I guess I won't get the shot then.
\_ well... it should at least prevent the flu.

10/22 oh my... is /csua/tmp/wathmorld.tar.gz really what I think it is?!!
\_ shut up, make a local copy, and forget where you found it. 20
years from now when the copyright cops become extinct, we can
           all celebrate...
\_ SWEET JESUS, I THINK IT IS! GOD HAS SMILED ON US!!
           \_ is this sarcasm?
              \_ sad
              \_ No.
\_ What does it seem to be? Math tutorial?
\_ It is just about one of the greatest resources for all
things math. I just can't believe that there is a copy
here on soda. Read this for the complete saga:

10/22 Looking for a good resource on how to pick a good English name
(or a christian name rather) from a Chinese name. Since I'm not
Christian, I'm having a hard time getting used to being called
"John" or "David" or "Josh", etc. How did you resolve this dilemma?
Are there easy to pronounce names that are not christian in origin?
        Pointers would be appreciated. Thanks.
\_ Why would you want a white Christian name? Helping out the
           imperialists, eh?
\_ My gawd! Why would you do this? Just how many people out there
have the same exact combination of English first name and Asian
last name?!?! In fact, I find mine to be curse. Be proud you are
Chinese and not some "John Lee" or "David Lin" or whatever.
\_ I find Japanese gals with Japanese first names more exotic than
those with English first names. --- Chinese
\_ japanese names are usually pronouncable by non japanese
speakers. not so of many chinese names.
\_ John, David, and Josh are all christian names? I think you are a
bit confused as to what Christian means.
\_ Is Jesus a Christian name?
\_ why make it sound like the original? as a non-chinese who has lived
in china and studied chinese, i find chinese names that are a weak
imitation of the original sound to be pretty pointless. it's a
different name. just pick a name you like, and forget about
           phonetics.
\_ Of course there are. For example, a woman's name of Wendy is not
Christian. Why not go for the most popular non-Christian name
           and choose "Mohammed"? --dim
\_ The most common first name in the world is Mohammed. The most
common last name is Wong. I've always wanted to meet someone
           named Mohammed Wong.
\_ all chinamen should be called joe. -- a chinaman
\_ pick a name from fantasy or mythology. like Thor, Ulysses,
Conan, Zeus, etc. If I was picking a fake name I'd never want some
mundane joe schmoe name. Pick something with power and panache.
\_ Heh, I actually know a Chinese guy namd Conan. And also 'Valiant'
which was derived from 'Wai Lun'. For girls, I like 'Geneva'.
\_ Soda already has a ulysses.
\_ From now on call me MAX POWER! --Homer
\_ You don't just cuddle with Max Power ... you strap on and
                 FEEL THE G'S!
\_ Homer: there are three ways to do things... the right way,
the wrong way, and THE MAX POWER WAY!
Bart : Uh, isn't that the wrong way?
                    Homer: Yes, but faster!
        \_ They call me Bruce.
\_ As if you'd get a helpful response asking the CSUA for help
           with baby names.
\_ Homer, Bart, Lisa, Margaret, Montgomery, Barney, Apu, Milhouse, etc.
        \_ Call me John-Holmes.
        \_ http://sunburn.stanford.edu/~knuth/faq.html#asian does this
vaguely have any pronounciation relation to knuth?

10/22 Salon has a nice bio of Mark Bingham, the former Cal Rugby player
who probably had a hand in the counter-hijacking of United Flight 93.
He's become something of a hero in SF and they're talking about a
memorial for him in the Castro district.
        http://salon.com/news/wire/2001/10/22/flight_93/index.html
\_ otoh, the chron has an opinion piece circulating a rumor that
the usaf shot down flight 93. god bless america.
\_ there was a second debris field, which isn't consistent with
the theory that passengers overpowered the hijackers and forced
              the plane into the ground
\_ Maybe it went down like this: passengers stormed the
hijackers, who really DID have a bomb. Blammo. No
                 F16 required.
\_ If this were true, why would the govt want to cover this up? It
would've been good press for Bush that they acted fast.
\_ Because the concept would have sickened most Americans at
the time before the full depth of the day had sunk in.
\_ The Chron has actually gotten worse since the merger.
\_ No shit...bringing in mediocre examiner people
brought down even further this already mediocre
paper. And "shitty" doesn't even begin to explain
the new examiner. I'd rather "keep SF" a one
                   newspaper city.
\_ It costs 25 cents to keep me busy on BART all the way to
work and back. Hard to beat that.
