10/11 Reading a lot on hedonic relativism.. good stuff which makes
normal americans scream repression. basically it is all related
to AL theory, adaptation level. If our AL grows without bounds we
are unhappy. This is common knowledge throughout history asnd
thus man has placed certain restriction on himself through
religion. These restrictions are intended to increase ones
happiness in the long term by in effect making one unhappy today.
In my mind this makes perfect sense in trying to resolve my
distaste of consumption. Why by little stuff every day when every
4 years I can buy a porsche which I will remember every day. I
will thus remember the sacrifices and remember the pleasure
making me a happier person in the long run. I am sure you have
        experiences similar to this.
Well this is what I have called "my way" my religion and honestly
this makes me feal sorry for the people in the islamic world
which run their lives in a similar way in order to maximize their
happiness. How can such a poor country survive??? religion... the
        way of life... sacrifices..
I only hope I can find these characteristic in argentina, I
really should plan to get down there next summer, gettin gout of
the US should be top priority, the american way just doesn't
work- it inherintly makes people unhappy thus requiring ever
        higher levels of consumptions.
Funny- why has america prospered so much more than other
countries- our religion REQUIRED IT. with no thought of the
consequences, no thought to what happens when the shit hits the
fan how do we deal with it... in other cultures they practice and
honor the situations where the shit hits the fan and lives their
        lives accordingly much happier.
BTW this can all be modelled formally using game theory.....
        good stuff... comments suggestions

10/11 SQL question: How can you get all the data from two tables matched
up, and include any rows that dont have matches. Specifically, is
there a way to do an OUTER JOIN that includes everything on the left
and everything on the right, matching up when possible by some
        join condition? Thanks. acheng
\_ in Oracle, u can do this:
           (nvl(left, foo) = nvl(right, foo)) OR
           (left = right (+) OR left (+) = right)
nvl takes care of cases when both sides are null.
\_ in DB2, after you receive my pity, you can do
           select foo
from bar {left|right|full} outer join baz
               on bar.quux = baz.garply
           where ... --scotsman
        \_ thanks for the responses!
Im using MySQL (pity me more) with no full outer join.
I ended up first applying to both tables a (left) outer join with
a temporary table containing all the values possible for the join
condition. (b/c the cross join already doesnt contain the desired
result). If anyone has more elegant suggestions for MySQL, pls
           tell. Thx-acheng

10/12 Nero users...anyone had the problem where you drag an mp3 onto
the list of songs to burn, and it shows it as only being like 2
seconds long, or something really short like that? Any solutions?

I was hoping for a delay in this bill so that it wouldn't be passed
but those idiots somehow pushed the bill through. honestly now, see
ya. I'm quitting my job after nov 26 and i'm going to move to japan
permanently. the country is now a totalitarian entity and our
freedoms are gone. it was nice knowing all of you. if i can't find
a tech job, i'm going to become a teacher. either way, there's no
way i'm going to live in this country with this regime. it's going

\_ blah blah blah, nothing is different. The exact same powers have
existed since before your birth. You're still living in the most
free country *ever* to exist on this planet but if you want to go
so badly no one is going to shed a bitter tear over it. If you're
serious you'd cancel your American citizenship and get Japanese

\_ Does this give the FBI to read email without a warrant?
\_ that's a little bit extreme. I mean, the FBI gets the power

10/11 can someone recomend a map company that sells maps of both accuracy
and detail? the USGS maps have great topography, but no roads to
speak of, and most road maps i have ever bought are terribly
innacurate. basically, i'm asking if there are any road map companies
that acutally compile accurate data(i don't care about price.)

10/11 Someone gave me an ELSA Synergy III video card. My PC currently
has a Matrox G400. Is the ELSA better? If so, how much better? --dim
\_ The ELSA is much much much better at anything 3d, from accelerating
CAD and 3d modelling packages to playing Quake N. It's a Geforce 2
variant aimed at the 'workstation' crowd.
In 2d performance, the two are probably about equivalent (i.e.
faster than anybody needs). The G400 might do a better job of
getting the most (in terms of image quality, refresh rate, etc) out
of a big, high-bandwidth CRT. The G400 generally has more stable
Windows drivers (but a much lousier OpenGL ICD). But these
differences are insignificant compared to the huge difference
in 3d performance/capabilities. So, the ELSA is far better but
only if you need or want the 3d stuff. -pvg
