9/10 Why does OpenSSH default to "ForwardX11 no"? Given X11's lack of
encryption, isn't this the best way to do X11?
\_ X programs can do more than just open windows on your desktop --
they can also do things like capture images of your display (as
xwd does) or intercept the keystrokes you type (as most window
           managers do).

This means that, while it's safe to telnet to a random machine you
don't trust -- it can't do anything to your local account -- it's
*not* safe to ssh with X forwarding to a random machine, since
that machine could (say) start monitoring the passwords you type
           into other windows.
\_ Yes, but they believe X11 forwarding should be something you
request as it can open security holes if you do it wrong.
\_ So what can I do wrong when using SSH's X11 port forwarding
\_ So what kind I do wrong when using SSH's X11 port forwarding
that would open a security hole?
\_ xhost +, which would then allow anyone on the remote machine
to snoop everything you type, completely destroying the
                   usefulness of ssh
\_ This doesn't make sense. Why would someone who is using
ssh want to use xhost at all and if you do "xhost +"
it shouldn't matter whether you use ssh or not because
either way there is a huge wide open hole at this point.
\_ less things to try to hack. period.

9/11 Is there an RFC or something that defines a valid email address?
Basically, I am wondering if using a plus sign "+" is Ok in the user
        name part of address.
\_ Most definitely. Sendmail calls the bit after the + "details" and
delivers the mail to whatever's before the + on the local system.
+'s are definitely valid email addr username chars, but some
mailservers (or web registration systems more likely) don't accept
           them anyway. --dbushong
\_ but is this a standard or just sendmail specific thing?

                 \_ Not.
Where does it say anything about +? It's a sendmail

9/10 A friend of mine just spent a lot of money on a custom engagement ring.
Sadly, last week his girlfriend broke up with him, and he doesn't know
what to do with the ring. It's a very personal design that his
girlfriend asked for long ago (although she doesn't know that he had it
made), so if he sold it off, she'd probably get really upset. Besides,
he's not even sure he can sell it because it's a very unique design.
Anybody have any good ideas what to do with the ring?
\- well is the issue about how to recoup some of the $? otherwise the
only "ethical" question seems to be "should he let her know". if she
doesnt know, i dont see where there are any ethical issues at all
unless it is "customized" in some really peculiar way. now if she is
just going tobe irrationally mad, i dunno if that really creates an
obligation but that is an interesting meta-question [see e.g. the
problem if the "utility monster"]. ok tnx. --psb
\_ why would she be upset if he sold it?
\_ more to the point, why should he care? unless he's hoping
              they get back together
        \_ all women are bitches
\_ in which case he wouldn't sell it

\_ all women are evil hos who are never satisfied. Isay prostitues
are cheaper in the long run and less troublesome
\_ etiquette is if the guy breaks it off, _she_ gets tokeep the ring
and do whatever she wants with it. etiquette is if the woman
breaks it off, _he_ gets to keep the ring and do whatever he wants
with it. so, according to etiquette, he may do whatever he wants

9/11 So... is this worse than Pearl Harbor?
\_ If the casualties now is worse than Pearl Harbor and using the
nuke was justified back then, wouldn't it make sense to justify
           using the nuke NOW?
\_ The attack on Hiroshima and Nagasaki was not a punitive
decision, it was to avoid an invasion of mainland Japan.
Furthermore, the biological effects of nuclear radiation were
poorly understood-- the H-bomb was thought to be just like a
           large chemical explosive.
\_ I feel what you say but something on the order of "freeze all
              assets" sounds better to me.
           \_ Nuke what?
\_ The numbers are the same or worse and they were almost all
civilians rather than enlisted personnel. -ulysses

\_ a country is harboring those responsible
\_ lets say it is Afghanistan. How in the world can
you attack except for maybe some retaliatory attacks.
China won't let us through. And neither will the former
Soviet Union. What do you do?
Soviet Union. What do you do? (actually, Pakistan may
                 let us through.
\_ do you think China or Russia (or nations formerly part of
the USSR) would be uncooperative with us about this?
                    \_ do you doubt it?
\_ I doubt any country will oppose military action
                          against Afghanistan.
                       \_ I'm naive, I guess, but I can't see any nation being
supportive or even desiring to appear supportive of
                          these terrorist attacks.
\_ Afghanistan (well, the Taliban) has already
denounced the attacks. Terrorists usually brag
about their attacks, not pretend that it wasn't
\_ No. This attack is a bloody media event. Pearl Harbor was a
military strike planned to ensure Japanese control over the
Pacific Ocean and East Asia. With PH, the whole west coast
braced for a Japanese invasion and put tens of thousands in
concentration camps out of fear. The Trade Center attack will
hopefully not cause the same thing to happen.
\_ Any question about where I stood on the Israeli-Palestinian
question evaporated when thousands of Palestinians celebrated
on the streets today shouting "God is Great".

9/11 How did terrorists get the airplanes to hit the WTC and Pentagon?
Why would pilots crash a plane into those buildings considering that
they probably knew that they were going to die anyways. Wouldn't it
be better to just try to crash the airplane in a place where the number
of casualties would be minimum? Or could it be that the terrorists had
their own pilots? Also, any ideas about how terrorists could have gotten
into the cockpit? Most airplanes these days should have armored
cockpit doors. You can't get in there if the door is closed without
blowing up the plane. Of course, the terrorists probably had all of
those details planned well in advance..
        \_ man, just shut up.
\_ Alright, I'm no investigator but I think what may have happened was
that the hijacker(s) got into the cockpit by threatening one (or
more) of the flight attendants with anything from butter knife to
Swiss Army knife (which almost always pass security) to knock on
the cockpit door; dragged and killed the pilot & 1st officer and
piloted the plane himself. This is assuming that the jihad hijacker
has knowledge of flying a commercial aircraft. I guess we won't
know until the FAA release the cockpit-tower conversation during the
crisis. I'm just pissed off and mad at this whole thing. - jthoms
\_ It's NOT THAT HARD to pilot a stupid airliner for this.
You punch coordinates into the autopilot to get you close,
then tweak the controls a little for maximum impact at the end.
It's not like you need to go to pilot school.
\_ Perhaps, but it's not that hard to find a pilot in this
world, and it seems unlikely that people this organized
could be so poor that they wouldn't be able to afford training

\_ "if you don't let me in the cockpit i cut out lisa's entrails!"
actually i imagine they killed someone first for effect.
\_ Still not a reason to let them in. Better they knife
                    50 people than kill 25K.
\_ I would assume that the hijackers killed the pilots. No sane
American pilot would have willingly steered a passenger jet into
the WTC or the Pentagon. News reports also stated that each of the
jets hijacked had similar controls, so most likely the hijackers
were trained to pilot the aircraft.
\_ Does this mean that flight sims will now be outlawed?
\_ Maybe they were holding the family of the pilot hostage.
Or they might have bribed him or something. I think that
they probably had guns, smuggled aboard by bribing a janitor
or baggage handler. Hey if it works for drugs in miami,
there is no reason it won't work for guns in nyc.
