8/21 To ucb grad students: is applying to Berkeley CS different than EECS?
I requested a CS applcation but EECS wrote back saying that they'll
mail me an EECS application on September. But I do NOT want to apply
        for EECS, just CS. Thanks.
\_ there are directions online. We can't be bothered to answer your
           question. Go to stanford, fucker.
\_ I believe the grad school is just "EECS" L&S CS is just for
undergrads. Are you intending to apply for grad or undergrad? -paolo
\_ Yes, it's different. The "CS" major is in the College of
           Letters & Science. -tom
\_ I'm talking about graduate school.
\_ in that case i believe you have to go with EECS.
\_ to paraphrase Theo: "Perhaps you should stay clear of
discussions where the roles of graduate cs students --
especially what their responsibilities -- are being
                    discussed."
\_ paolo, are you still deleting the motd every
                          3 minutes? -tom
\_ only in your bizarre fantasy world, tom.
\_ Who the fuck is Theo and why should anyone give damn
what this incoherent motherfucker has to say?
\_ tom, are you a grad student?
\_ Uhm, why does this matter?
              \_ no.

\_ but bad porn is good!
\_ Hello Kitty pairs up with Julius the Monkey:

        \_ It's all about DP.

8/20 anybody have an ssh-over-http tunnel to soda that they're willing to
        share?
        \_ http://www.csua.berkeley.edu/ssh ?
\_ doofus. he wants to run ssh using http as base for an IP layer.
\_ I was looking for this a while ago. There's some stuff on the
open source sites but I don't recall which. Try freshmeat and
then sourceforge. I don't think it was on http://kernel.org.
        \_ use scotch
\_ Actually I have been looking for a ssh-over-http tunnel
that actually uses HTTP protocol, as tcp/80 can get intercepted
by annoying http only things like caches and proxies.
\_ That would be very painful. HTTP makes a very poor
interactive protocol - the header overhead would kill you.
\_ people behind corporate proxy servers don't have a choice.
do you have any better alternatives?

8/20 Who has taken creatine? Is it good stuff?
\_ It's alright. It doesn't make you bigger necessarily,
but it does make you stronger (which in turn can correspond
to a size increase). In my experience, though, as much
as it doesn't have any (currently known) side effects,
I'd still stay away from any of those supplements. If you're
dedicated and consistent with your workout, you'll gain the
same strength soon enough. That's why I stopped taking it.
\_ Is creatine all-natural or does it contain steroid?
              \_ which definition?
\_ Creatine isn't a steroid. However, if you take the
supplement, your body stops producing it. Not good. It also
        increases water retention.
n 1: any of several fat-soluble organic compounds having as a
basis 17 carbon atoms in four rings; many have important
            physiological effects
2: any hormone affecting the development and growth of sex
          organs [syn: {steroid hormone}, {sex hormone}]
\_ is whey protein bad to take?
\_ You don't need any more protein. It all comes out your piss
anyways. Try fixing your sleep habits.
\_ And you know this how? Protein needs for athletes training
10-15 hrs/wk is pretty high. If you live off Smokehouse,
you're right, but serious athletes should know better than that.
\_ Creatine is already in your muscles; the supply of creatine in
the muscles is normally used in high exertion scenarios and
lasts for 1-2 seconds. Ingesting additional creatine doesn't
really help you any unless you're looking for very short bursts
of energy, and even then it's not really proven to help. I
would ask you why you'd want to take creatine. It isn't a
           panacea by any means. -chaos
\_ I would add that you must accept that any real change in
your body will require long term effort and dedication
and there is no quick fix. All the supplements have one thing
in common, they are to be used in addition to exercise and
           good diet. -ax
\_ so how long did it take you to go from whimpy biker tom
              physique to ax superman physique?
\_ The absolute limits most people hit are:
20 lbs of muscle the first year you have ever
worked out. 6 lbs per year after that until
you plateau. It was about 6 years of working
out to go from 145 lbs to 190. And in the last
ten years, I've only added 20 lbs. -ax

8/20 I've been able to do "echo $JAVA_HOME/abcd:$JAVA_HOME/xyz" for many
years but today I get an error message regarding a bad modifier. Now
I have to explicitly say "echo ${JAVA_HOME}/abcd:${JAVA_HOME}/xyz".
What the hell changed? I still use tcsh.
\_ Perhaps : colon is a modifier, hehe. What did you change?

8/21 What's the general rule for nesting C include files? Say if FOO is
        defined in foo.h and bar.h uses FOO, should I makde bar.h #include
foo.h, or should I let whatever .c files that use bar.h include foo.h?
        \_ use #ifdefs
\_ As a general rule, if a file uses FOO, it should #include
whatever file declares FOO. If you also use #ifdefs (which
you should) then the fact that you may have included foo.h
multiple times shouldn't be a problem.
\_ Do the following in bar.h and you can include it anywhere you feel
like and it will all just work out in the end:
           #ifndef _BAR_H
           #define _BAR_H
           [ your code here ]
           #endif /* ! _BAR_H */
\_ as usual, this poster didn't bother to read the question.
do what hte poster said, but on foo.h, not bar.h. then
              have bar.h include foo.h. -ali
\_ what kind of post is this? oh yes, it was FOO, not BAR. jesus
fucking christ. he said if you do that to bar you can include
it anywhere. if he's too stupid to figure out that also works
for foo then he's probably too stupid to know how to post to
                 the motd.
\_ General rule is for foo.h to include bar.h. If foo.h and bar.h
are very closely related -- e.g. part of the same system library --
then there are other options: puting FOO definition into baz.h and
including it from both files, or modifing bar.h to declare only
FOO if _NEED_FOO is defined (in order not to pollute the namespace.)
Are bar.h and foo.h maintained by the same person? -- misha.
