8/10 My /etc/inittab suddenly disappeared on me. I can't boot
anymore (aside from sigle-user mode) any idea on how to
fix it (Red Hat Linux 7.1)
\_ Get /etc/inittab from some other system and copy it back to /etc

8/10 On a PC you can use something like Exceed to connect to a UNIX
workstation desktop (e.g. CDE). How can you do the same from one
        Solaris workstation to another?
\_ You use something like Exceed called X.
\_ duh. The question is "how" not "what".
\_ duh. the answer was "you use...". that's definitely
                      an answer to a "how".
\_ Sooooo, I am sitting in front of Solaris workstation A
and I would like to login to workstation B. "How" do I
connect to the X server on workstation B from
                        workstation A?
\_ wow, things have really slipped since i was at cal.
\_ I'm not talking about doing anything like
setenv DISPLAY blah:0.0, I want to see the CDE
login screen of workstation B on workstation
                              A's display.
setenv DISPLAY blah:0.0 and then running some
X application, I want to see the CDE login screen
of workstation B on workstation A's display. If
you don't know how, it's ok. really.
\_ That's not what you asked. dtremote to
the remote workstation is one way. If CDE,
then from your local console login screen
                                 Options->Remote Login (or something
like that). Being unix, there are other ways.
Then again, my ESP powers are dull so I may
not know what the fuck you are thinking since
you never say. Things "like Exceed" do not
need to redisplay the CDE login screen, but
just select apps. If you are running SSH
you dont need to setenv DISPLAY either.
\_ you are thinking about xdm then. man xdm
                                to find out more.
\_ thanks. I'll look into that.

8/10 "Hello, habla espanol?"
\_ "!Hola! ?Se habla Espanol?" would be the proper way to say it.

8/11 Will you people RTFM for Christ's sake! Back in my day we'd laugh
at these retarded questions and insult yermom. And if you're not
going to answer the question, just insult them and get it over with
instead of providing a line by line proof of the poster's stupidity.

        \_ nweaver d-d-d-definitely needs a gf
\_ FIND ME ONE THEN, DAMMIT! -nweaver
\_ You can find one yourself. Lower your standards,
                 look in new places.
\_ you mean masturbating in your soda office won't find
                    you a girlfriend?
\_ grammar error in Paragraph 4, Sentence 1.
\_ you mean a grammatical error?
\_ Interesting idea. What makes you think that the
"bad guys" haven't already though about and
           implemented something like this?
\_ help nick realize his dream!
\_ the only way this is going to happen is if you find
a service that's not commonly firewalled off. like http
           or ssh.
           \_ OH, like IIS?
              \_ Doh!
\_ nweaver, your simulation is already done. For years scientists
have already simulated the outbreak of disease. Assume a variant
of bubonic plaque breaks out from Africa. More than 1/3 of the
human beings will die before they receive treatment. It's called
the "next plaque." We're already breeding super plaque of the
next generation. It's just a matter of time. Since 1/3 of
humanity will die anyways, who cares about wormhole. Complex
systems grow and die quickly. That's just a fact of life.
\_ Bubonic "Plaque", eh? Is that what happens when you don't
visit the dentist for a really, really long time?
\_ man, you are SOME dipshit! bravo!

08/11 How can I setup htaccess to protect my web files? Any samples or docs ?
        \_ use google.
\_ Make a .htaccess file in the directory you want to protect (will
be inherited by all below it) In it put:

           AuthType Basic
AuthName "Top Secret User (Or Whatever you Want)"
           AuthUserFile /path/to/passwd/file/not/web/accessible
           require valid-user

           Then run /path/to/htpasswd -c /path/you/used/above username
to make a new user and create the password file.
        \_ touch ~/public_html/.htaccess
           chmod o-r !$
