7/11 I broke one of the shifters on my circa 91 hard rock and I need a replacement. Anyone know of a shop in the south bay that might be able to get a replacement and install it for me? My shifter is a suntour (sp?) if that makes any difference. ----ranga \_ It's not very likely that you'll be able to find above-bar thumb shifters at a bike shop. Suntour is out of business and for the past several years all mountain bikes have had under-bar shifters or something equally distasteful. You could replace both shifters, but they'd probably be indexed for 8 or 9 gears instead of the 7 you likely have on your bike. Shimano is the Microsoft of the bike world. -tom \_ I had the "quick-shift" style shifter if it makes any difference. I wouldn't mind replacing both shifters, but I though that switching to Shimano means that I would have to replace the entire gear system as well. Do you know if that is the case? Thanks. ----ranga \_ Almost certainly not for the front shifter. For the rear shifter, it depends on the freewheel spacing and the indexing in the shifter. It's reasonably likely you'd need to replace your freewheel, but a bike store probably would know better than me, I haven't dealt with the under-bar shifters much. -tom |

7/12 So, i'm trying to get laid off from my progamming job, because I've decided to leave (and I already have my next job lined up) but I want to partake of my company's generous severance package. The company is going through lay-offs right now so it's not unlikely that this would actually happen, but how do I go about getting laid off but not fired? \_ You're trying to get laid... from your programming job. \_ It's probably a little late to lower your job performance, but a sudden defeatist "we're all going to get fired anyway" can go a long way. \_ a friend of mine who went through the same thing volunteered to be laid off so that his boss wudnt hafta pick someone else tho he was real tight w/ his boss so it worked out fine.. -shac \_ Yup, this is the way to go. Assuming you are in good standing, tell them you would like to be laid off as well. It could work. \_ You should quit. Go ahead and figure out a way to ask to be laid off though -- although a nutty manager might fire you. |

7/12 Does anyone know the details of how the ports "fake" the installation of a particular piece of software? I'm trying to do something similar on Solaris and I can't think of a good way to do it. \_ I dunno what you mean by "fake", but the system will build software without installing it (ie, moving it to the normal location and creating a package for it). This can be used for installing programs that have some sort of library dependency. |

7/11 who offers classes on PHP in the east bay area? work is paying. \_ take the money and go get some cheap whores... why would you want to take a PHP class? \_ d00d! "cheap"?! do you realize how much a "PHP class" is likely to cost? this'd cover an all-night orgy with half a dozen top-notch professionals... \_ Don't bother. If you know perl, you can learn PHP. It's simpler, albeit with uglier syntax, and, IMHO, inferior. If you don't know perl, learn it. If you can't learn perl, you obviously have issues with functional programming languages, and won't be able to learn PHP. \_ Dude. If Perl is a functional programming language then the Moon is made of green cheese. Lambdas do not a functional language make. Perl is about as procedural as they come. It's proud of it in fact. Perl is evil. Look at Ocaml if you want to know what Perl could have been if it was a good little language. \_ Hah! Shows what *you* know! You can do ANYTHING with perl! even get yourself fired!!1! err....hold on a second.... that came out wrong.... |

7/12 I'm curious about this latest Napster shindig. How is Napster's situation so different from webspace providers? You can find copyrighted material on those personal web page sites often, although the provider generally cancels their account (i presume once someone notifies them of the breach of TOS). Similarly with the myspace/idrive/freedrive places that all went broke. So why can't Napster just require an email address for ID like the other things, and if you have copyrighted stuff then your account is cancelled? |

7/12 Is anyone running SETI@home on IRIX? I tried running the setiathome-3.04.mips4-sgi-irix6.2 version on an IRIX 6.5.4m machine with an R4600 processor, and it complains "Program not supported by architecture." What's wrong? Thx. \_ You already asked this question. It's self-explanatory. It's apparently a MIPS4 (64-bit) executable and your processor is a 32-bit chip. Whoever compiled it should've used the -o32 option to generate an (old) 32-bit object. --dim |

7/12 What are the cheaper/better dialup services around? Price? \_ I guess people don't use dialup anymore? \_ What happened to http://autobahn.org? I tried to sign up but they wouldn't let me. \_ I have a couple questions pertaining to this: 1. who's a reliable free isp for macs? are there any left? 2. I'm thinking of canceling my earthlink dsl on the 16th (my six month contract is already up, so it's no longer a $35 split every month anymore). I would like to get cable but alas, it ain't available in Cupertino. I don't want to give in to these $50 dsl assholes, but if I have to, who's the best alternative right now? 3. What about that sprint wireless dsl or whatever that is? 4. what IS the cheapest dialup deal? Like ranga was saying, dialup should be FREE. I would even hazard to say that broadband should be free, or at least available cheaply. I mean, if I was actually renting an apartment I would be completely fucked paying my cell phone bill, my dsl bill, on top of everything else. \_ Trolling should be free (and usually is). \_ Fry's offers unlimited dial-up service for $10/mo, but, alas, it's Fry's... \_ You must be a Communist. \_ http://www.vei.net offers dial-up service for $10.95/month. You can roam, too. I've had fairly good luck with them. They use standard ppp so you can use *nix or whatever OS you want. \_ says 12.95 on their site + 5.00 setup fee. Anything else? |

7/12 Hello MOTD, sorry to bother you (again) but you always know all the good (and bad) apps. I am looking for log utilities to manage my apache logs. I need something to rotate/gzip/etc. the logs and something to do simple analysis (and some historical) I'd prefer a script where i can see what is going on over a binary like webalizer, but whatever. As for the rotatelog utility that comes with apache, it is broke in the version i am running and i don't want to upgrade. \_ If you want to do this correctly, you need Apache's rotatelogs utility, which almost certainly works in the version you have, but not in the way you want it to. What rotatelogs does is accept web logs on stdin and write them to files with seconds-since-the-epoch filenames, starting a new file once a week. You need that, because you can't move the logs out from under Apache safely (and if you do, you need to restart the server, which would cause disruption of service). So then you just write a cron job to gzip the logs, and use analog to analyze them (analog will also analyze gzip'ped logs). -tom \_ I have an error_log.0994896000 that goes back to yesterday AND i have an error_log that goes back a long long time. This is broke or (perhaps more likely) i am doing something wrong. What would you suggest i am doing wrong? \_ you have to set up rotatelogs on your ErrorLog line as well as your TransferLog or CustomLog line in httpd.conf. -tom \_ Or cronolog, which lets you specify the naming scheme --dbushong \_ rotatelogs blows. cronolog is much better. -ERic \_ Hey tom, why is it unsafe to move logs out from under Apache if you restart it? Also, restarting Apache takes something on the order of seconds, so the disruption of service is nigh-invisble, is it not? - Rotates logs manually and restarts Apache \_ It depends what you're serving. If someone is downloading a big file, for example, either their download will hold up the server respawning, or the download will be killed when you restart. If you have only small content and don't care if you occasionally serve broken images or pages, it's not so bad. Still, it doesn't cost much to do it right. -tom \_ I ran an app that was using jserv, and stopping and restarting apache was a major pain. rotatelogs was the best solution. -ERic |

7/13 My windows 2000 is screwed. No matter what program I try to run it says, "Cannot find the file '....' (or one of its components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available." Even regedit doesn't run. What is the one .dll or whatever that can screw everything up? \_ maybe you lost the path environment variable. make sure it points to winnt/system32, check windir as well c:\winnt \_ When I tried to use the control panel to change the environment variables, clicking on system gives "Accesss to specified device, path or file is denied." The paths seem to be right if I look at the it through My Computer -> Manager -> ... -> Environment Variables. I tried it as an "Administrator" and the result is the same. 7/13fri beijing takes the games!!! \_ Sounds like a virus to me. \_ Well, what is the actual value of '....'? Why don't you make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available? \_ Wow. You've learned to cut and paste. Excellent, young troll. Perhaps soon your keeper will allow you to wipe your own butt. program that runs fine IE 5.5. You're right. Point to you. \_ I love hot naked chicks, but right now I just want my w2k working again. :( \_ '....' involves almost all my programs right down to calc.exe, Almost any program that I tried running gave the above. Only program that runs fine is IE 5.5. Many document icons also reverted to the generic one with the windows logo. IE 5.5 has been installed for a few weeks and ran fine. Path and filename looks right, and I have no clue how to find out what are the required libraries - must be something common to all these programs. Please help me! \_ maybe you lost the path environment variable. make sure it points to winnt/system32, check windir as well c:\winnt \_ Where do I find the path environment variable? \_ Man, you are a hurtin' puppy. \_ I know. Hehe, I found how to set the variables using google. Kind of embarrassing. I will try it once I get home. Thanks for the answers so far. |
