6/11 I run Red Hat 7.0 on a Sony laptop and whenever APM suspends
my machine, X windows crashes. Anyone else ever experience
this problem? I don't know how to tell if its a GNOME component
or an X windows issue or what. I've tried Google'ing it, but
to no avail. Thanks. - rory
I guess it's worth mentioning that if I'm not running X, the
machine can sleep and wake-up just fine. - r
        \_ look at http://www.linux-laptop.net I really can't tell you
anymore, as you didn't post the model number. You could try
switching to a virtual console before suspending, and then
switching back to X when you resume. That usually works on
laptops that have this problem with X. - ajani
\_ Are you run XFree 4.0 (I don't know if its standard on RH)?
If not try and upgrade, it might fix your problem. I've had
this problem before on a Toshiba. I fixed it by exiting X
before entering sleep. This may not be an option for you,
but I've never had this problem with NetBSD, so you might
want to give that a try.
\_ sure. I'm sure NetBSD is exactly what Rory wants. Do
              you RIDE BIKE too?
             \_ Actually no. I drive a Lincoln (16.2 MPG).
\_ Actually no. I drive a Lincoln Continental (260 HP
                 4.6L V8, ~ 16 MPG).
                 \_ how absolutely 310.

6/10 I sent my taxes on April 14, anybody else who sent theirs last minute
get their fed, refund in the mail yet?
        \_ yes
\_ yes. I got mine two weeks ago... and I didn't even send it in ontime
\_ I mailed my 1040 in on 4/14 and I got my refund via direct deposit
           on 5/11.
\_ I sent mine in on the 12th of April and I got mine back about a
           week and a half ago.
\_ I sent mine April 16 and got mine back two weeks ago.

6/11 RIH Timothy McVeigh.
        \_RIP
\_ I hope he doesn't rest in peace. rot in hell is quite apt.
\_ Rot in hell, cool. I was originally thinking "rest in hell"
                when I wrote it.
          \_ "Relax in Hottub"
\_ What's the big deal about this guy anyway? Who gives a damn
whether or not he lives/dies and where he goes after he dies.
\_ I think a good number of Oklahomans care if he lived/died.
Where he goes after simply makes for good motd trolling.
\_ he's not going anywhere, he's gone. eternal void, dust to dust
\_ What if there was no heaven?
\_ Explain to me how killing innocents because you were told
to by the govm't in an attempt to preserve the nation's economic
health warrants a medal and killing innocents because your
conscience tells you to in an attempt to reclaim the nation's
freedom warrants the death penalty. It seems to me the latter
is a little higher on the morality scale.

6/11 Does anyone have a tyan tiger 100? I'm planning on getting one
to run FreeBSD and I wanted to know if there are any problems
with it. I'd consider an alternative dual p3 mb as well.

6/11 Anyone has experence moving from the U.S. to Europe? I am looking
        for a good shipping/freight company.
\_ once your parcel gets to france, the french people piss on it.
i'd say hand-deliver it, otherwise pay a courier like DHL./
           FedEX.
           \_ But it's FRENCH piss!
              \_ yummy

6/11 Anybody transitioned from being in high-tech to another career? I'm
beginning to get sick of this rat race. I used to thinking that
becoming a manager and climbing the ladder will make things better,
but it hasn't. I'm thinking of starting a small business like owning
a restaurant or running a franchise like Mail Boxes Etc. -sick of tech
\_ i am thinking of going back to chemE stuff but since I learned a lot
of cs I can incorporate that into what I want to do.
Mostly use cs as a tool for helping in research
\_ have you thought about switching to another career but still in
           high tech? like tech-grunt -> marketing/sales/product mgment
that way would be less of a hurt to the wallet and keep some of the
value of your experience. or become an FAE or consultant. or not.
\_ Something like a sales engineer?
\_ whatever appeals to you. also, maybe a teacher. one of my
H.S. teachers was an engineer who got sick of engineering.
i dunno, just thinking of things where your knowledge could
still be used, but if it's "time for something completely
different" only you can figure it out.
\_ My real estate agent was a hardware engr before he decided to switch
career several years ago. He said he made a lot more $ as an agent.
But of course for someone switcheing to real estate now it'd be a
           little late.
\_ I met this engineer in Taiwan. He already made enough money, so
he quit his job and started driving taxis cuz he likes talking to
           people.
