2/16 Is there no motd reader who has softcopies of hilfinger's 61b notes?
I find this hard to believe.
\_ I'm sorry, my dog ate it. After he deleted it from my hard disk.
\_ I have it. Who are you?
\_ could you e-mail them to me? thanks. - jameslin |

\_ where'd you see replicate() being used? it's not in the 1.3 API
index. |

2/16 Yo, does anyone have hilfinger's foreskin?
\_ You wanna java.lang.Object.clone() him and hope to boost the
advancement of the field of CS?
\_ I think he wants a chew toy.
\_ does he ever teach grad courses?
\_ hilfinger has taught 263 and 264 before. |

2/16 Anyone here running SRP telnet? The URL is:
http://www-cs-students.stanford.edu/~tjw/srp
It looks better than SSH (no lawsuit, Open vs. DataFellows, etc).
I know its from the farm (but hell, some of are grad students there).
\_ I wrote some papers with Tom, he's a pretty sharp guy. I think
SRP is more secure than SSH, the only problem is that nobody
uses it. Also, if I recall correctly, it doesn't encrypt
anything after the login. |

2/16 Is there a program to expand a .bin CD image file onto hard disk
directly without going through the CD burning step?
\_ Most Unix'es can mount an ISO-9660 (High Sierra/Rockridge) image
as a filesystem directly, either through builtin software or free
ware addons.
\_ Specifically, use vnconfig(8) on FreeBSD or losetup(8) on Linux.
\_ or lofiadm on solaris 8.
\_ or Joerg Schilling's fbk on earlier Solaris (see cdrecord)
\_ There's a program (shareware?) called WinImage that lets you
browse/copy from ISO image. It's for Windoze, though. You didn't
want that, did you? |

2/16 I'm going to SE Asia for 2.5 months. I have a question about
anti-malaria pills. Anyone who's been to SE Asia and is at all
familiar with anti-malaria drugs, please email me.
(asb@eci.ucsb.edu) -asb
\- malaria prophylactics work in a very different way
from other vaccinations. you can ask your Q here, but
if you have a medical question, best to ask a medical
person rather than a fellow traveller. CDC should have
some region-specific info ... this is very important for
malaria --psb, who has done meflequin, chloroquin etc.
\_ peace corps?
\_ I had malaria; it's no big deal
\_ you mean "have"
\_ you're right, I meant to say "got"
\_ My girlfriend went to India for 6 months... took Malaria pills...
had terrible nightmares the whole time... stopped taking them and
they went away. ...my two cents |

2/16 tiger.census.gov is a good map site. It has details street maps
along with capability to put in lat/long lines. But, the lines
only show every .1 degrees, which means that they don't show up
on a zoomed in map, not very useful. Is there is a similar site
with the capability to have the lat/long lines more evenly spaced? |

2/16 Anyone tried installing solaris x86 on a laptop? What are my chances?
Does x86 solaris have usb support?
\_ yes. kiss apm goodbye. why not just get a tadpole sparcbook and
run sol sparc?
\_ LIMITED yes. There is only a specific USB controller that
solaris supports, and it only supports a very limited number
of USB devices. Read the HCL.
\_ tadpole sparcbooks are rediculously expensive. Why not just
install Linux on it?
\_ but linux isn't unix! the gods will cause wrath upon him
and make his system *gasp* user friendly! No! the true path
is the arcane way, were only a select (and therefore highly
paid) set people type in line noise on a command like to run
ed or sendmail or something.
\_ I get paid to manage hunders of Solaris, Linux and BSD
boxes and yet I prefer to run Linux on my laptop. The
hardware support and the community support for the laptops
is so much better.
\_ Price? you're concerned about price? this is a machine
you phillistine, not some date. You must spend if you want
quality! The most expensive stuff must be the best stuff!
(and hence the only supported stuff)
\_ Tadpole spacbooks are lemmons. They are heavy and not
that much faster than PC laptops, except that it cost
6 or 7 times more than a comparably equiped IBM or Dell
laptop.
\_ Pass Xsun and go directly to http://www.xfree86.org or http://www.xig.com
(XFree is cheaper, xig also adds support for other notebook
devices Sun doesn't do very well). Also, go to http://www.sunhelp.org
and read the FAQ's before you begin. -alan-
\_ Openwin is the standard! |
