Carter is the first leader of the Outfit who Porter kills. The mural is a very blocky industrial picture of beige and grey colors, and i thiunk it's awsome. any help would be appreciated. \_ Joseph Biegler |

1/14 I am looking for a part time programming job, preferably east bay. Thing is, almost all places want only full time. Is anyone here working at a company that is hiring for part time? \_ part-times generally isn't a good investment for companies. you should look for contract work, or consider self-employment. Why do you want to work part time anyway? \_ I want to work part time so I can accomodate going to school. Contract work would be just as good. I used to find contract work on ucb.cs.jobs, but haven't seen any lately. I have looked on some of the job/career sites too, like guru. Ideas for other places to look? \_ Most high-tech companies only offer part-time jobs of the sort you want to interns or existing employees who want to switch from full to half time. \_ If you're really good at something in particular, than a company is more willing to hire you part time for a well-defined task. |

1/14 Is there such a thing as a multisync LCD monitor? I was told that I can use any old multisync monitor for the PC as display for a ultra 5 or 10. I'm looking at some web sites on LCD displays and non of them explicitly say "multisync". Thanks. \_ Basically all LCD monitors can sync to different resolutions, but they have a native resolution which is the only one they'll look good at. -tom |

My Computer-> System Properites shows it's a x86 Family 6 Model 8 Stepping 3, but have no idea what that means. I basically just want to know if it's a 650, 700, 750, etc. Shareware would be good. \_ http://www.h-oda.com |

1/15 I'm currently on contract with a software company. They've opened a discussion with me about going perm there. Can someone tell me the pros and cons of each..? \_ Contractor: more $, more IRS paperwork \_ just use turbotax, a lot easier. or get a tax accountant if you're making $$$$$$ \_ If you go perm, they will also pay your social security taxes. That's another 1.5%. Perm: less $, more benefits, more stability, opportunity to advance \_ For family people. \_ Perms: stock options. \_ and insurance, and ESPP, and everything else you would call "more benefits". Thanks for adding nothing. |

1/15 Wherever I go house hunting around the south bay I only bump into east and south asian couples or families. I almost never see white prospective buyers. Where have all the white people gone? This is not a racial troll. I want to live in a diverse neighboord with a good school district. $600-700K range. \_ spent some time helping parents househunt in same area with same criteria. reality comes down to "high asian population==good schools". correlation is very strong; i'm not going to make guesses as to existence of a causal relation in either direction. -whiteboy direction. -alexf[whiteboy] \_ exception: filipino population \_ that's b/c typically, filipinos are the "asian trash" of all asians, mostly b/c they've been dominated by others for so long, especially the U.S. in the early 1900's. That's why at alot of filipinos are so exclusionist and demonstrate that by wearing that sash as a group during the engineering commencements... \_ That's funny, I never saw a sash. Oh that's right I went to Cal. \_ use a private school already \_ uh. incorrect. vast majority of the top-notch schools around here are public. -alexf \_ An Asian-only private school would kick ass. Like Lowell, but private. \_ Concord/WalnutCreek/LaMorinda/Clayton/Antioch/Pleasanton/Dublin \_ I wouldn't live in Contra "Cancer Belt" Costa County \_ What do you mean by "Cancer Belt"? urlP --sony \_ n/m. found it on google w/ "contra costa county cancer belt" --sony from the South. They have the cutest accent! \_ Who would? Except white (and by that, white people who only want to live with other white people) people? \_ i grew up in the creek in the 80s and was happy to see that diversity has continued to increase on a recent holiday visit. not much different than half-decent parts of berkeley. don't look at nordstrom's to measure diversity. \_ "Where have all the [white] people gone... Long time in passing......." \_ lots of them in Tennessee, South Carolina, West Virginia... \_ ugh, WhiteTrashVille? \_ Yup. I once spent four days in Memphis and saw less than ten asians there. \_ I don't know about you, but the coolest Asians are from the South. They have the most adorable accent! \_ Indeed. \_ Makes me want to hump them. |

1/15 how do you register for GRE? is it only computerized test nowadays? \_ if you register online, dont do it right before the deadline if you can help it. the site gets absurdly slow. i think it's http://www.ets.org \_ http://www.gre.com \_ but it only has computer based tests, are there #2 pencil tests? \_ it got phased out, I was one of the last few to take then pencil. unfortunately, I'll have to take it again if I go for another grad degree...*sigh* \_ not a native Sodan, are you. \_ All General exams are computer-based. I took the CompSci Subject exam in '99, and it was pencil-based then. \_ is this for grad skool? \_ yes \_ Yes \_ If you're asking the motd, you're not ready for grad sk00l. -TheMan \_ seems like you don't know the answer either, love it when a loser hides his ignorance behind someone else, answer the dudes question if you know , if you really are a man. \_ Guess ya didn't know either eh. Proves my point. -TheMan \_ Uhm, how exactly does that prove your point, goofball? \_ It depends, are you taking the general or the subject test? \_ The written/pencil tests are gone. 1/15 I have an NFS mounted mail spool on a solaris machine. Any idea why I might not get "You have new mail" notifications after setting the "set mail" shell variable? I do get the notices on a Sunos machine that mounts the same spool. \_ Depends on how the NFS implementation works. It might not notice that the file changed by default. You might want to look into the NFS mount options. I use "noac" sometimes, but that's not on Solaris. \_ Solaris will whine if you NFS mount /var/mail without noac. |

1/15 What's a hot CS research field right now? -applying grad school \_ Dr. Forsyth's porn detection research. You'll be spending lots of time in your office with the door shut. \_ if there is not a field of research that you are already interested in, why are you applying to grad school? If you don't know exactly why you're doing it, grad school is usualy a pretty bad idea. \_ original poster _may_ be trying to decide between several areas of equal interest. in that case, post the list that you're picking from. \_ original poster may be interested in only the $$ aspect of CS, and can tolerate whatever CS field. Especially if he buys a degree at $tanfurd. \_ Networking \_ what part of "CS"? \_ the "c"omputer part. \_ I think right now a lot of people are interested in the socio- linguistic implications of the adoption of an alphabet in the various celtic languages. \_ Looking at the web-logs of the CS geeks at my work, it looks like the hot research field is: hot asian chix \_ where do you work? \_ At some place with a good enough net connection and little enough work that the developers can p0rn surf all day. |

1/15 Who provides the time service at the number POP-CORN (767-2676)? \_ "Kernel" Sanders \_ You do not need to dial "POPCORN" to hear the time. You just need to dial 767, plus 4 other digits. ANY 4 other digits. So now you this, hopefully you can figure out who provides this service (No, it isn't some strange group of people). \_ You mean it's PacBell? So it only works in Northern California? \_ It's certainly affiliated with the telco somehow, but this did _not_ exist in SoCal last time I checked, so it's not a universal PacBell feature \_ Does not work in SoCal, even though Pacific Bell is my telco (some areas are Verizon). --dim \_ in LA it's 853-1212 (or possibly any four digits). you can find out what it is anywhere by calling 411 and asking for the number for the time. welcome to the universe. more interesting is the number to dial that repeats your own number back to you. it varies depending on Central Office, and the phone co doesn't want you to have it. sf mission area readback #: 211-0022 berkeley: ? \_ Yep. \_ It worked in Reno when I lived there, but that's also PacBell land. -alan- \_ That's not the official number anyways. Only for bwd compat \_ what's the number to get the phone number of the phone you are dialing from? \_ You have been abused by the motd formatting god. \_ I think it used to be 1-800-MY-ANI-IS, but they changed the password to it. -geordan \_ Ah, I still remember the good 'ole 80s \_ in maryland, they dont have the 767 (popcorn) feature and i find that i miss it. is there some web page that tells you where you can call up if you need to know the time when youre not in norcal? i tried a number of key search words on the web (time service, etc) and had no luck. -hahnak \_ RTFM (RTFphone book) or check providers home page |
