1/14 the motd has been pretty good with thins kind of question recently.
can anyone identify the artist who did the mural behind Carter's
desk in the movie Payback? Carter is the first leader of the Outfit
who Porter kills. The mural is a very blocky industrial picture
of beige and grey colors, and i thiunk it's awsome. any help
        would be appreciated.

\_ is Florida generally considered part of the Deep South?
\_ sure is, can't get more Southern than Florida. Except for
the out-of-state seniors and the Cuban colony.
\_ Florida was part of the Confederacy.

1/14 I am looking for a part time programming job, preferably east bay.
Thing is, almost all places want only full time. Is anyone
here working at a company that is hiring for part time?
        \_ part-times generally isn't a good investment for companies.
you should look for contract work, or consider self-employment.
Why do you want to work part time anyway?
\_ I want to work part time so I can accomodate going to
school. Contract work would be just as good. I used to
find contract work on ucb.cs.jobs, but haven't seen any
lately. I have looked on some of the job/career sites
too, like guru. Ideas for other places to look?
\_ Most high-tech companies only offer part-time jobs of the sort
you want to interns or existing employees who want to switch from
           full to half time.
\_ If you're really good at something in particular, than a company
is more willing to hire you part time for a well-defined
           task.

1/14 Is there such a thing as a multisync LCD monitor? I was told that I
can use any old multisync monitor for the PC as display for a ultra 5
or 10. I'm looking at some web sites on LCD displays and non of them
        explicitly say "multisync". Thanks.
\_ Basically all LCD monitors can sync to different resolutions,
but they have a native resolution which is the only one they'll
           look good at. -tom

\_ i think you mean to say "estimate" or "determine" not "detect". -ali
\_ Ok, how do I estimate the speed if I don't have Norton?
              My Computer-> System Properites shows it's a x86 Family 6 Model
8 Stepping 3, but have no idea what that means. I
              basically just want to know if it's a 650, 700, 750, etc.

1/15 I'm currently on contract with a software company. They've opened
a discussion with me about going perm there. Can someone tell me the
        pros and cons of each..?
\_ Contractor: more $, more IRS paperwork
\_ just use turbotax, a lot easier. or get
                                   a tax accountant if you're making $$$$$$
\_ If you go perm, they will also pay your social security taxes.
              That's another 1.5%.
Perm: less $, more benefits, more stability, opportunity to advance
           \_ For family people.
        \_ Perms: stock options.
\_ and insurance, and ESPP, and everything else you

1/15 Wherever I go house hunting around the south bay I only bump into
east and south asian couples or families. I almost never see white
prospective buyers. Where have all the white people gone? This is
not a racial troll. I want to live in a diverse neighboord with a
        good school district. $600-700K range.
\_ spent some time helping parents househunt in same area with same
criteria. reality comes down to "high asian population==good
schools". correlation is very strong; i'm not going to make
guesses as to existence of a causal relation in either
           direction. -whiteboy

           \_ exception: filipino population
\_ that's b/c typically, filipinos are the "asian trash"
of all asians, mostly b/c they've been dominated by
others for so long, especially the U.S. in the early
1900's. That's why at alot of filipinos are so
exclusionist and demonstrate that by wearing that
sash as a group during the engineering commencements...
                     \_ That's funny, I never saw a sash. Oh that's right
                        I went to Cal.
\_ use a private school already
\_ uh. incorrect. vast majority of the top-notch schools around
                 here are public. -alexf
\_ An Asian-only private school would kick ass. Like Lowell,
                 but private.
        \_ Concord/WalnutCreek/LaMorinda/Clayton/Antioch/Pleasanton/Dublin
\_ I wouldn't live in Contra "Cancer Belt" Costa County

only want to live with other white people) people?
\_ i grew up in the creek in the 80s and was happy
to see that diversity has continued to increase
on a recent holiday visit. not much different
than half-decent parts of berkeley. don't look at
                         nordstrom's to measure diversity.
\_ "Where have all the [white] people gone...
               Long time in passing......."

\_ Yup. I once spent four days in Memphis and saw less than ten
              asians there.
\_ I don't know about you, but the coolest Asians are
from the South. They have the most adorable accent!
                   \_ Indeed.

\_ not a native Sodan, are you.

machine that mounts the same spool.
\_ Depends on how the NFS implementation works. It might not
notice that the file changed by default. You might want to
look into the NFS mount options. I use "noac" sometimes,

1/15 Who provides the time service at the number POP-CORN (767-2676)?
