8/23 Does the name John W Marshall strike a bell in the microprocessor
community? Is he some sort of a hotshot? Anybody know more info
        about him?
\- yes, he has a soda account. mail jwm@soda --psb

8/23 Where can I get a list of JDK comparisons? I'd like to get a
benchmark on Sun's JDK 1.2.2, IBM's JDK, Kaffe, etc. Thanks!

8/23 How do you find out who has been a Berkeley prof? I'd like to find
out if Dave Rosenberg has been an A. Prof, when, and at what. Thx.
\_ The clock tower shooting thing is passe.

8/23 So do I have this right?: Since 2600 (and everyone else i assume)
has been forbidden from distributing DeCSS, does that mean there is
no legal way for me to play legally owned DVD's on my linux box?
        \_ Yes.
\_ No legal way. How is this relevant? -John
\_ If you have a Dxr2 or old MPEG card and a Creative Labs DVD
player (they came as a bundle) you can play them with some
           linux drivers, I believe. --dbushong
           \_ Not legally.
\_ Why is it not legal? The drivers are from Creative
                 Labs themselves... --dbushong
\_ Go read your dvd license. Bring a team of lawyers.
\_ Instead of making vague claims, why don't you actually
say what makes it illegal? I very much doubt it says
on a DVD "you are only allowed to view this on a player
hooked up to your TV or on a DVD player under Windows
                       or MacOS" --dbushong
\_ Because unlike the majority of motd clowns, I'm
not willing to pretend I'm a lawyer or that I play
\_ ah. you just pretend to be a cunt on the motd.
                           one on the motd.
\_ but you're willing to make unfounded
legal assertions. very nice, troll. -tom
\_ No. I'm telling you to go ask a lawyer
if you want to know what the law really
is. Just because you sign your name,
                                      tom, doesn't mean you're not a troll.
\_ Be patient. I believe http://intervideo.com is coming out with
              a linux player soon.
\_ Install VMware, Windows, & Windows DVD software (Linux/x86 only)
\_ Install MOL (Mac on Linux) and DVD software (LinuxPPC only)

8/24 Anybody catch Professor Ribet on Nova Thursday night? What'd he
talk about? Anybody happen to record it (VCR, TiVo, anything)? know
if/when its coming on again? I missed it for Survivor. Thanks.
\_ Yeah, caught it last night. First time air was Fall 97 i think,
when Ribet taught 55. How ribet came out such a well adjusted
kind of guy compared to the admirable freak kahan is beyond me.
It wasn't that great, overall. Wouldn't recommend it.
\- kahan doesnt wear green elf shoes --psb
\_ Ribet is a jerk. Who cares what he talked about?
\_ Ribet is a really nice guy and a decent prof.

8/24 When will digital radio take hold in U.S., become popular,
and then replace analog radio broadcast?
\_ What's wrong with FM radio?
\_ You need a tuner card/usb antenna to listen to it.
Streaming media is much easier to use.
\_ It's easier to receive streaming media than FM in a car?
\_ I think it's slightly cheaper to receive FM through my
walkman. I just can't see myself paying a monthly
wireless internet fee just to listem to streaming media
                 while I go running.
\_ The kind of people who go running cannot possibly
imaging why digital radio is better than analog.
\_ Say what? What does running have to do with being
                           an audiophile? You're weird.
\_ I ask this because I wonder whether it would be worthwhile
to invest in a regular FM tuner if it would be useless or if
high quality music will be broadcast digitally soon.
\_ There is far too high an install base of FM receivers to
worry about them being useless soon. Look at how many
years it's taken TV to convert to digital/HD (FCC has been
pushing for almost a decade) and how little progress has
                   been made so far.

8/23 Can I/How_Do_I find the uptime on a windows 2000 (or NT) box.
        \_ Start->Programs->Administrative Tools->Event Viewer. Look for
the last event ID=6009. This event is pretty close to the
boot time. (I only tested this on a Win2k Server box.) -brg
\_ I believe there is an internal command that pulls it, but
I don't remember. There's an "uptime" exe for Win32 which
           uses this service.

8/24 motd restored as usual. if you dont like what the motd says, just
don't read it. try a .hushlogin file in your home directory.
\_ yeah, I bet this is the same person who does us the favor of
censoring the motd? I expect this to be deleted within
           three minutes.
\_ What was the language the motd was in, anyway?
           \_ man tr
\_ motd restored to a very out of date version as usual.

8/24 I used to watch porn and jerk off with a good friend of mine.
After he got married he stopped hanging out w/ me. How do I get him
        back?
\_ Offer to sleep with him (and/or his wife)
\_ Find a woman who plays tennis and video games. Or another man.
\_ Get yourself married. Then you won't worry about these things.
\_ Yeah, then you can double date, play doubles tennis,
play Super Mario Kart 4-way, and do other married couple
              things. -someone who's been there
\_ wow, I never though there were swingers on soda.
\_ Your buddy left behind his youthful homosexual experimentations.
Shouldn't you also? Unless you're real gay. In which case, you
should find a BF to hang around with.
\_ How do you know the poster is a he?
\_ Don't you mean "find BH to hang around with?"
