8/16 Anyone know where I can get a program that will show me the
devices on a PCI bus on a Solaris system?
\_ prtconf
\_ This shows you only the devices detected at boot by
open firmware. I'm looking for something that will
probe the bus.
\_ that, by definition, is what you are looking for.
You are probably thinking one thing and writing another.
prtconf -pv will show PCI devices, whether there is a driver
installed for them or not.
But there is also a DOS pciprobe tool somewheres
on http://sun.com
\_ I'm working with Compact PCI, so we can hot swap in
cards. The of device tree (displayed by ptrconf) is
(AFAIK) built at boot time only and doesn't detect
cards that are hot swaped in and out.
\_ Nope, the device tree changes. ddi_create_minor_node()
and ddi_remove_minor_node() can add and remove entries.
You should probably also be aware of devfsadm on Solaris
7 11/99 or later.
\_ Oh yeah. The key is to implement a _probe entrypoint,
presumably.
\_ Does this apply to Solaris 2.6 as well? I can't get
the tree to change except when I manually change it
via ddi_{remove,create}_minor_node(). I know some
of this is solved in 7, but PHBs won't let us upgrade.
|_ Don't tell the PHB's you're upgrading and they
probably won't notice.
\_ Yeah, I tried that but the fscking t1 card
I'm stuck with (http://www.nmss.com has a really
stupid driver that doesn't work under 7.
\_ people who swear with fsck need to be slapped
\_ fuck you tom
\_ fsck you tom
\_ f*ck you tom
\_ is it probe-ide from PROM? --social science major
\_ I wrote f*cking not fscking. Some geekboy
keeps changing it.
\_ slapped is an odd way to spell "beaten
till bloody, tied up, and then dumped off
the nearest dam"
\_ Solaris 2.8.

8/16 What's the best DSL service to get in Berkeley?
\_ related note: since there are all sorts of horror stories about
\_ ass.
\_ explain
\_ It was just vapor lock.
\_ ass
n 1: the fleshy part of the human body that you sit
on [syn: {buttocks}, {arse}, {butt}, {backside}, {bum},
{buns}, {can}, {fundament}, {hindquarters}, {hind end},
{keister}, {posterior}, {prat}, {rear}, {rear end},
{rump}, {stern}, {seat}, {tail}, {tail end}, {tooshie},
{tush}, {bottom}, {behind}, {derriere}, {fanny}]
DSL in general, are there services that do not require that I
sign a year-long agreement? That way if they suck it won't cost
me $$ to change provider?
\_ Let me tell you a story. GTE services my wire. That means
whichever ISP I go to for DSL, the DSL company will have to
talk to GTE. So I choose GTE as my ISP, since GTE is by
default my line provider. GTE has a 30-day money back
guarantee. I canceled in 10 days, got cable modem service,
and have not paid anything to GTE for anything, except
for my regular phone charges.
\_ I like DNAI. I haven't had problems with it yet, and the
customer service, when I've had to use it, is all right. -brg
\_ firstworld
\_ It took over a week to get more IP's, so eventually
I installed debian and set up IP masq. It took two
more weeks after that to get them to point my domain
to my box. Other than that, the service is good, the
support guys (all guys) are friendly. Less Ass, More
Bandwidth.
\_ There are a few women in support at FirstWorld.
They were clued in as well. So far I haven't
had any problems with them (over 8 months now).
\_ I support women in IT, also, though hopefully
we can see more in top-tier pipelines.
\_ We had a few women (tech/managers) in IT/IS
at cisco. They were as good or better than
the men. I'm am not for or against women in
any job. I feel that the best person ought
to be hired for any given role.
\_ This has got to be the single most generic
PC non-statement I have ever read.
\_ Now that I re-read it, it sounds pretty
dumb. What I meant to say was more like
we had talented women in IT/IS at cisco,
and they were generally better (more
knowledgeable/nicer/faster) than the men.
I'm all for getting women like that into
IT field.
\_ Who gives a damn? I just want to
work with/for and manage quality,
talented people. I don't care what
their plumbing looks like.
\_ firstworld is as expensive as PacBell ($79) while supplying
significantly less download BW: 608kb vs 1.5Mb.
\_ perhaps, but what good is the bandwidth if your line
is down for a couple of days at a time. PacBell also
has a shitty data backbone infrastructure, slow news
servers, spotty dns and CLUELESS support (even in the
noc). I'm not sure what service is $79, mine is only
$69 (was $49 but I upgraded to the faster one). |

8/17 Is there a good place in/near Berkeley to go to get my monitor
fixed? It doesn't show red anymore.
\_ Have you tried slapping it around a bit? This is a serious answer;
often bitch-slapping a monitor on the side helps cure missing
color. Use as much force as you would use to slap a human, maybe
somewhat more.
\_ Quiet Trevor.
\_ try looking at the pins on the connector cable, sometimes missing
colors are due to bent/missing pins.
\_ It was just vapor lock.
\_ it's very likely to be a problem with the cable and/or connectors.
there are three wires that carry red/green/blue signals, and the
red connection must be broken somehwere. try wiggling the connector
at both ends (monitor & pc) and make sure they're secure. if that
doesn't help, try replacing the cable. |

8/17 Anybody on soda have more than one house? Is the mortgage on the
second house also tax-deductible? I heard that mortgage interest
deduction is lower for 2nd homes. Can someone confirm? Thanks.
\_ It is less (as it's not a necessity to have a second home). But
you can get around this if you have enough equity in your first
home. Buy the second home for cash from a loan on your first home,
then you are just extending the payments on your first home, and
still only have one mortgage to pay.
\_ If you intend to rent out the other place I don't think that you
can get a mortgage deduction. The deduction only applies to your
primary residence. Like the previous poster said, get a equity
loan on your primary house and use the cash to buy the second one.
That way you will have one paid off house and you will get 30%
back on the interest that you pay for the higher loans. Also if
you homestead the second property and/or put it in an estate it
can't be accessed by creditors in case of bankrupcy. If things
go south you will still have a place to live free and clear.
\_ Well I don't have enough equity in the first house to do
this. Not yet at least. But I still want to cash out some
more stock to buy the 2nd house for renting it out. Do you
have a lawyer or CPA do estate planning? Or do you just read
a book? What book would you recommend? I hate giving up
control of my finances, but it get more complicated the more
money I have. Ugh...
\_ CPAs, like any hired help, don't do anything without your
direction. They help you do what you want to do; go see one,
try to get a good reference. A good CPA is an invaluable
resource towards converting that stock into a productive
base you can grow on.
\_ I agree. A good CPA or estate/tax lawyer will help you
and give you decent advice but you have to set the
direction. The reason I know about some of this stuff
is that I've been investing since I graduated HS. When
I got to Cal my parents gave me enough to make it for
two yrs tops without working/investing so I gave myself
a crash course (necessity is the mother of invention).
\_ Wow, you had it so rough. I got a job to support
myself for 4+ years. Hunger is the mother of
motivation.
\_ That was rough? I turned down a grad school
admission in Palo Alto to get a job to support
myself and put my sister thru college (Haas School),
and she's paying out-of-state tuition for all four
years.
is that I've been investing since I graduated HS. |
