7/20 How do I stop unwanted spams again from commericial vendors? I keep getting these messages that have that disclaimer on them, but when you reply to the message, you get this sort of error: Message from <DEAD>web6204.mail.yahoo.com<DEAD>. Unable to deliver message to the following address(es). <345uhsdf@oooa.aol.com>: Sorry, I couldn't find any host named <DEAD>oooa.aol.com<DEAD>. (#5.1.2) \_ Do you really think that they would put their real address in the From: field? What you can do is read the message headers to figure out which host the message is comming from and then forward this message with the headers to their ISP to get their account terminated. \_ I frequently forward it to spamrecycle@ChooseYourMail.com . I'm not exactly sure what is done with it there, but the practice is encouraged by CAUCE (cauce.org) and F.R.E.E. Put a "I didn't ask for this spam" and your state in the body and they (supposedly) forward it (anonymously?) to your state senators. I can only vouch that I haven't noticed any extra spam as a result of doing this. ChooseYourMail seems to be a private company that's going for a strictly ethical opt-in only spam revenue stream. Does anyone else have more info? \_ I understand that that FROM address isn't going to be the right one, but isn't that sort of illegal, using that kind of loophole. wish i could start suing some asses |

7/20 Looking for a NT/data recovery expert to do 2-3 days work (ASAP) as an expert witness for an upcoming trial. Opposing party claims that all data on its stand-alone, NT-running PC was "accidentally" erased; the law firm I work for suspects otherwise. Must be (a) technically capable and (b) articulate, calm, and unflappable (as you may need to testify at trial). If interested email timothym. \_ You don't need an expert. If it was accidentally erased, you should be able to get it back w/ any <$40 data recovery tool. If not, it was intentional and they burned that file real good. \_ Fair enough, but *I* can't tell that to a jury; I need someone with established credibility (EECS degree; SiliValley experience, etc.) to sway a jury. Also, evidence that files were intentionally burned may be admissible in court. -timothym \_ Has anyone actually attempted recovery? Your expert's testimony doesn't count very much, otherwise. \_ Supposedly the user's SA did, but we don't believe his story. (We've already obtained evidence that this company doctored some e-mails and documents; they've got little credibility at this point.) -timothym \_ Your expert needs to attempt recovery / inspect the PC, I suppose with the defendant watching. Call up http://drivesavers.com and see what they say about the whole thing. Otherwise, yeah, your expert can comment on the defendant's testimony. |

7/20 When I press PGUP key when running Solaris xterm, instead of sending that keystroke to whatever application that is running in the xterm (such as a less pager) xterm scrolls up the contents of its buffer. Is there an X resource setting or something to fix this highly annoying behavior? \_ Yes. \_ How? \_ Look at /usr/openwin/lib/X11/app-defaults/XTerm and receive enlightenment (or a splitting headache). \_ extra hint: canonical name for PGUP is "Prior" \_ huh? |

7/20 Is there such a thing as a document only scanner? I have a lot of documents (8.5 x 11) that I need scanned in. Flat bed scanners won't work for me because I have to put in the pages one by one. Big waste of time. Is there such a product on the market? \_ If you didn't care about quality, you could fax them to a computer. \_ there are many scanners with page feeders \_what a brilliant idea.. good thing i didn't throw away my fax modem.. \_ such as??? Every scanner I've seen is a standard flat bed scanner. I've never seen one with a page feeder. \_ UMAX 2400S is one. There are many. --dim \_ Moron. Get out of Kansas. |

7/20 Do any of you soda sysadmins use SNMP-based network management software, like HP Network Node Manager? It seems to me like these things are too huge and too general for the network engineers they'd be marketed toward. \_ what do you mean by manage? monitor, configure, map, or all? \_ conceivably all, but mainly monitor > map > configure \_ My opinion of them was they are big and bloated and dont really monitor what I want monitored. They're a nice product for MIS morons who have lots more money than clue, and want to have pretty maps and whatnot to give woodies to the pointy hairs. \-some of these products are ok, but in some cases "crackerware" [nmap] or hacker tools [tcpdump] are better. cetainly these tools are better at producing "pretty pictures" for the MIS crowd. It is kind of sad that these add real $$$ to yoru resume. I would suggest not hiring people who only know vendor tools and not fundamental concepts [Someone who claims to know Tivoli but doenst know what the tcp handshake is. However I suspect more people who use say MRTG would know what the tcp handshake was] and i would suggest avoiding wokring for people who only care if you know Sunnet manager of the HP openview [or whatever it is called] and it doenst make and impression when you say "i write my own monitoring tools". However, some of these jobs might pay well. --psb \_ What makes namp crackerware but tcpdump a tool? I use \_ What makes nmap crackerware but tcpdump a tool? I use both and not for cracking. \-i'm not dissing nmap. i use it too. but come on.--psb |

7/21 Anyone out there made the transition from nontechnical career to technical? If so, what made you decide to switch and how difficult was it? \_ I graduated with a bio degree and went back because of the Internet. It wasn't hard because I just made my hobby my job, and I was always good at my hobby. my job, and I was always good at my hobby. Why didn't I major in CS originally? The same reasons girls/women give: They don't want to sit in front of a computer 12 hours a day; I want to interact with people and see new things. \_ Silly troll. \_ Hey troll-hunter: want me to post the link to the "troll" news article about women in CS? "troll" news article about women and why most have "troll" news article about women and why an undetermined number (changed from "most") have a distaste in being a CS major or going into IT? Try here, http://abcnews.go.com/sections/tech/DailyNews/techgirls000705! then here, http://www.aauw.org then here: http://www.aauw.org/2000/techsavvy.html \_ mmm. Social sciences. \_ Moron. \_ Uhm, that's nice. A bunch of surveys based on what people got from watching bad movies written by people on type- writers in the early 80's rather than the reality of it. As if being an office drone means something other than sitting in front of a computer all day and just getting less money for it than a tech person. \_ Congratulations. You got the point. \_ Wow. This thread really deviated quickly. |

7/21 Is there a way to get root access given (unlimited) access to console on a sparc20 box with solaris 2.5.1? The pricks in IS&T are taking over a month to fix some things on my desktop machine and I really need to take care of several of them to get anything done, at risk of pissing off IS&T. Please withhold the "if you don't know how to do this, you shouldn't have root anyway" flames; i know how to fix what I want fixed, while not fucking up anything else. \_ Well, if the other things fail you could try: <DEAD>phrack.infonexus.com/search.phtml?view&article=p53-9<DEAD> I haven't done this, and don't know whether it will work with your model+keyboard. --Galen \_ Thank you kindly. This worked like a charm after a few small corrections (s/1\@/@/g). \_ How do you find the memory address of the process? ps -lp gives me a ? for ADDR \_ It didn't do that for me; make sure you're running /usr/bin/ps though (/usr/ucb/ps, for one, has entirely different flags). If that fails, poke around in /proc/$$/, it's probably visible from somewhere in there (try bytes 0x48-0x4B of /proc/$$/psinfo). Make sure to check the current contents of *(process_pointer)+0x18 first, and see if it matches your current ruid (or risk clobbering something random in memory) \_ Boot from CD. -tom \_ No CD drive (or floppy for that matter) \_It is likely that your box was installed over network and the install server is still acting as boot/install server. In this case you can boot of the network by typing "boot net" from open boot prom. This is equivalent to booting from CD. Of course, this wouldn't work if boot prom is password protected. In this case you might need to swap the prom chip. Though, if your box is also locked then you can't get root without breaking things. \_ Borrow a cdrom - the CSUA has a sun-compatible one. \_ unless of course they set a prom password, in which case you're pretty hosed. \_ or swap in a prom. Or swap in a disk with your favored configuration. With physical access it's always possible. -tom \_ Mmm..physical access.. *drool* \_ They all say they know how to fix what they want fixed without fucking up anything else. Why don't you talk to their manager or have your manager talk to their manager? If it's truly preventing you from getting work done then it's a big deal and i'm an intern. it's not _/ taking matters into your own hands will just mask a problem. Maybe IS&T is short-staffed and enough complaints will allow them to hire, for example. --dim \_ IS around here is absolutely hopeless. Trust me, this is the last resort. \_ Well, if the other things fail you could try: <DEAD>phrack.infonexus.com/search.phtml?view&article=p53-9<DEAD> I haven't done this, and don't know whether it will work with your model+keyboard. --Galen |

7/21 Anyone try to buy tickets using moviefone by web or by phone (415-777FILM)? Their interface is horrible! How do you buy tickets? (what are the exact buttons?) \_ Yeah, their interface blows. Whether or not you can buy tickets depends on the theater he movie is playing at (some theaters just don't support purchasing tickets via 777FILM or the site). Most likely, you were just looking at a listing where online/phone purchase wasn't available. -dans |

7/21 Anyone do a transition from tech to non-tech career? \_ yes. from tech -> real estate broker/stock guru. Make more money than 99% of you coding monkeys out there. Only founders can match the cashflow I generate. A single real-estate transaction I do is worth more than your typical .001% share in an IPO. \_ Uh... Who said 0.001%? Try 0.2% minimum. Higher usually. I think you need to rethink your monetary calculations. I think you really missed the money plane. At least you caught the bus. |
