7/12 Is it morally acceptable for a married man to attend his buddy's
        bachelor party?
\_ What's the matter with you? Morality is relative. By the
way, it's okay to sleep with your buddy's fiancee because
she can make decisions on her own and doesn't need a man
to "save" her or think for her.

7/12 I'm a middle-aged woman and a horny soda geek keeps coming on to
me. How can I get rid of him?
\_ You don't. Just think of that 36 year old teacher in seattle
that fucked the 11 year old. Go for it girl!
\_ He was 11? I thought he was at least 13 or 14.

              \_ From the Web site:
"They believed that consumer software, long been (sic) a
hostage of computer scientists, needed to be designed by
consumers themselves. Setting a course that would eventually
lead to the creation of Project Voyager, the founders formed
Adjectivity Corporation to guide the project to market."

So what are they saying? That they invented the focus group
and user testing as part of their heroic drive to PROJECT
VOYAGER? Or that software *really* needs to be written by Joe
Six-Pack using Javascript or Visual Basic for Word (languages

7/13 Anybody on soda using bill pay services like http://paymybills.com or
http://paytrust.com? How do you like it? I want to sign up, but I can't
get past the trust issue. The idea of somebody looking at my credit
card or phone records spooks me.
\_ Those companies are lame. Yo can always get the same services
like that from your own bank. Most banks offer for free if
you meet certain criteria such as minimum balance or auto-direct
           deposit.
\_ most banks offer payments.. but not receiving the bills as
well (only a couple). i use paytrust and like it. only diff
i know between paymybills and paytrust is paytrust is primarily
a NT shop and paymybills is mostly solaris. both have a 3
month free trial as well (it takes 1 1/2 for your first bills
to start showing up b/c of change of address). whatever -shac
\_ Just out curiosity, why would you want a third party to
receive your bills? I doubt I would want anyone to see
my cellular phone bills or credit card bills.
\_ And how do you know you like it when you're not even getting
your own bills?! *NEVER* give _any_ third party company the
right to withdraw your funds at their whim.
\_ it takes a month or so for your bills to start going to
them. you still hafta say "pay this bill from that acct
and this much.." very useful if you travel alot and
still want to be able to review the bills in detail
before paying. you can live paranoid forever. if you
use direct deposit then you already gave a third party
the right to withdraw funds. who fucking cares? -shac
\_ DD is *not* a withdraw right. It isn't about being
paranoid. It's about control of your life and not
giving access to your money to some bunch of fools
who are lucky to have Hayward degrees in art and
the identity thieves they hire. Best of luck to
you. I'll keep my own identity, thanks.
\_ every DD enrollment form ive ever seen has a line
that says you authorize them to withdraw funds
as well.. so they can cover their ass if they
give you too much money. -shac
\_ Not mine. Not my last one or the one before.
I read that stuff carefully. Anyway, DD is
still not the same as some random .com
having authority to pull funds to pay people
you may not want paid or just in general
having too much information about you in the
hands of the random people they hired. If
you were an identity thief, at what sort of
company would you try to get a job?
\_ http://my.yahoo.com BillPay is cool. 3 month free. Give it a try.
\_ I use http://citifi.com as my bank, and I get my bills, and I use the
webpage to have citibank cut checks and mail them to whomever.
They do this for free. Best deal I've found. Total control by
me, free, privacy equal to a normal bank. Other benefits to citifi
           as a bank as well.
\_ WellsFargo and BofA have this as well. Together with

7/13 I really don't see how ZEV or LowEmitV can reduce congestion:
        http://www.dmv.ca.gov/vehinfo/decal.htm
        Is the government stupid?
\_ Because when the smog is so bad that you can't see, you have
           to drive slower.
\_ It doesn't say ZEV can reduce congestion. It says you can drive
a ZEV to avoid the congestion. -- yuen
\_ CalTrans is trying to encourge people to use ZEV/LEVs. They ahve
stated that they'll kick them back outta the carpool lanes
if/when theres enough of them that the carpool lanes start getting
           congested.
\_ one word for CalTrans-- LAME.
\_ Yup...did you guys know that for a while, they were
trying to prevent private companies from taking
                     public works infrastructure contracts?  basically,
they were hogging up all the contracts and not
allowing any private companies to do road and
bridge work. The public was geting screwd
as a result because Caltrans would take all the
contracts and then the work would pile up, they
couldn't handle the load. So stuff just sat around
not getting done. lots of structural companies
were getting together to file a petition to change
something in the state constitution so that Caltrans
couldn't get away with this anymore, but I don't
know if it passed. But yeah, they're messed up.
\_ If allowing a few thousand cars into the carpool lanes which
won't make the lanes any more crowded will encourage more people
to look at low emission vehicle options, it sounds good to me.
I've already seen a lot more people interested in alternative
fuel vehicles as a result of the law. -cdaveb

7/13 I'm looking for a good resource for finding decent and cheap
hostels/dorms in Europe (spec. Italy). Any recommendations?
        \_ Hostel International?
\_ You can find a lot of info on the Web: the world Hostelling
International Web site has a link to each country's national
           hostelling organization at http://www.iyhf.org/ihyf/world.html.
Searching on Yahoo for <city name>+"Hostels" works, too. Buy a
copy of the _Let's Go Europe_ guidebook and use it to cross-check
particular destinations you're interested in. I've used this
technique for 6 months so far, and it hasn't killed me yet. (The
_Let's Go_ guidebooks are for the "I'm a *really* cheap college
student" crowd; Rick Steves and the Lonely Planet guidebooks are a
step up, but still reasonably budget-oriented.) -- kahogan
\_ I second the recommendation for Let's Go and Lonely Planet, they're
both pretty high quality (I've used both very often.) Also,
maybe you can get some info from AIESEC (http://www.aiesec.org
If you spend the $15 or so for one of their cards (assuming
you're a student) you can get a lot of discounts on lodging and
           transportation. -John
\_ Oh yeah, the _Rough Guide_ books are also quite good. -John
\_ At least in the US I've found that the non Hostel International
hostels were much more interesting than the associated ones. But
yah, you should go the hostel route.

7/12 When I connect to a linux box from an xterm on a solaris2.5.1 box,
the terminal gets all screwed up (underline/inverse don't stop where
they should, etc); this doesn't recur when I do the same from
solaris2.5.1->soda or from soda xterm to said linux box. Is there
a way to fix this without root access? ('xterm' entries in the
respective termcaps are the same, if that means anything
        [termcap-illiterate])
\_ Are you sure you're using an xterm and not a dtterm?
\_ Yes. Wouldn't touch dtterm if they paid me.
\_ I think there was some weirdness with termcap in RedHat 6.0.
If that's what you're using, upgrade. Make sure your
TERMCAP environment variable isn't set and that you have
                   "set term=xterm". -tom
\_ This is RH6.2, I do NOT, once again, have root on
EITHER box, term=xterm, and TERMCAP is not defined. Any
other ideas? Oh, also, same happenned with RH5.2
EITHER box, term=xterm (as is TERM), and TERMCAP
is not defined. Any other ideas? Also, same
                      happenned with RH5.2
                      \_ xterm -title "NUKULAR B1FF\!\!\!\!"
\_ Well, it's just a length environment variable
setting. If you're feeling brave, you can set it
by hand and do the stty yoursel,m too.
\_ i have a similar problem between ANY non linux compiled xterm
and linux. redhat needs to die. you can always setenv the TERMCAP
envvar. i haven't had time to investigate this, so i just run

7/13 How can I redirect a web page to another page automatically on
loading? I've checked lots of HTML guides and have seen this
happen before (no CGI) but can't find the code
        \_ In <HEAD> section:
           <META HTTP-EQUIV="Refresh" CONTENT="0; URL=<DEAD>new-url/"<DEAD>
Change 0 to N to delay by N seconds. This is a means of
mimicking HTTP headers in HTML, and is not 2.0-standard, so
may not be supported by some of the oldest browsers. Anything '96
and up is more or less guaranteed to support it. -alexf
           \_ thanks!
\_ You're better off with a server side redirect but meta-

7/13 What's the equivalent on NT of "|&" (csh)
\_ linload. or install a port of one of the shells.

\_ The following in csh and tcsh:

is the same as, in sh, ksh, and bash:

7/14 What is the easiest way on a unix box to find what the last
thing written to a disk (parition) was?
        \_ touch foo; echo foo
\_ Ho ho ho. Well you could um use a find command or um
use ls with the -t argument but um either of these
might require sorting on the date...you can probably
sleuth by looking for the most recently written-to
directory depending on your Unix, iterate. The most
basic I would try would be: % find <path> -mtime -1 -ls
and scan the output for the latest file.
\_ What are you trying to do? Usually these sorts of random motd
questions are best done in an entirely different way than what
           the poster thinks they need.
\_ you are correct. I had an errant process (big brother install)
eating up disk space on /usr (why it wasn't using swap i
don't know) and no file was being changed/written. When
I killed the process all my disk space came back. -TOP
\_ It was writing to an inode which was no longer referenced
by any directory (so it didn't show up as a "file").
When the process exited, the inode's last reference went
away and the disk space was freed.

sense of value. Both are important. Both should be taken care of.
           The resources are there.
\_ that was actually pretty sane. I'm sure someone will
              delete that response
\_ it's a load of shit. The university is using nearly
all of its space now. Office space and lab space both
take priority (in University thinking) over students or
parking, yet office and lab space is getting horribly
squeezed. Where is all this land the University can
use? There are three plots near campus; Underhill,
People's Park, and the Oxford Tract. Underhill is being
built on, People's Park is a political quagmire, and the
Oxford Tract is getting a seismic replacement building.
So, uh, where else do you put student housing and/or
                   parking? -tom
\_ Check out a map of the city with UC owned land marked.
It's *everywhere*. They own a *huge* chunk of the city.
I was floored the first time I saw it. And no, it isn't
just the obvious campus and other UC marked areas. As
far as "People's Park" (it's neither), they should've
paved it years ago. It's a criminal sesspool and a
waste of perfectly good land. Politics be damned. The
worthless opinion of the typical city citizen has never
stopped UC from doing anything else.

        \_ When I was 18 I could squirt up to 8 times a day. Now at 30 I
can only squirt 3 times a day. Is this decrease of performance

\_ Gee, are you sure it's a decrease in performance? Maybe

\_ The more you squirt, the earlier it rots.
