5/15 Where is the CSUA MOTD FAQ? TIA
\_ If you have to ask, you don't know.
        \_ /csua/adm/doc/policies/motd --root
\_ "The MOTD may not be used for non-University business."
by that account, 90% of all motd postings are in violation.
\_ I meant more like the most frequently asked/posted
threads/questions...and their answers. Should the librarian
or someone compile the top 16 most common CSUA MOTD Questions?
\_ why don't you? if you want it done, it'd most likely work best
if you do it as opposed to asking for _someone_ to do it.
\_ No. That's not the libarian's job. You want them to collect
              walled zinc haiku too?
              \_ hi G!
              \_ Unnecessary. Already done. -pld
\_ as an official part of librarian duties? No.

5/15 I need to write some c++ client/server code using sockets. Is there
a nice library to use or do I need to roll my own. I want something
which makes it easy to set up a connection and then have the
client and server communicate via << or >>. Thanks.
        \_ Idiot.  C++.  READ!
\_ actually, I have some really sleek Pacsal libraries that
I've managed to fine tune for above average performance.
If you're interested, post a followup....
\_ If you want to use Java, there is an easy way to do it... look at
           the Socket class.
\_ Thanks, but I was planning on using c++.
\_ It's pretty easy to do in Tcl.
\_ Idiot. C++. What's wrong with you people? READ!
\_ you can buy libraries like Roguewave. Or, you can create your
own classes and perhaps buy the Steven's book.
\_ Using C code, it wouldn't be hard to write your own << and >>
operators. Get some sample C code and go from there. Is this for
           Unix or another operating system?
        \_ Might be useful:
                http://www.gnu.org/software/commonc++/CommonC++.html
\_ Thanks. This is exactly the kind of thing I was looking
for. Unfortunatl, the documentation is a bit sparse.
\_ I know this asian chick that does killer COBOL. I'm
sure I could get her to send along a pointer or two if
           put up your email addy.
\_ Perl is perfect for socket programming. Perl is perfect for
           replacing Java and C.

\_ Wow. Bill Joy found Berkeley computers so obsolete that he found

Question: How exactly can you distinguish Voice traffic
from other traffic, esp. when you can tunnel it
over another protocol like http or you encrypt
                  it using SSL and such?
What the hell do the telco's want regulated?
\_ It's just political clap trap noise.
\_ But, technically, unencrypted voice traffic is hella
easy to detect, regardless of protocol. Anyone who
knows basic signal processing can write the code. -blojo
\_ what's the easy trick? does the spectrum for speech look very
                 specific? -ali
\_ What you would basically do is: (a) look for signals
that have most of their energy in the 500Hz-4KHz range.
                    (b) The amount of energy and its centroid oscillate /
fluctuate with periods that are O(.25 seconds).
Basically you can look at docs for any of the recent
vocoders and see what circumstances they focus on
                    reproducing... fortunately recognition that something
is probably a voice is a lot easier than recognizing
what the voice is saying. -blojo
\_ Key phrase: unencrypted. Solution: encrypt it.
\- you know the NSA has a patent on automatically
IDing FAX and some other kinds of traffic. --psb

                       here. -ali
