5/10 I ordered DSL through Rhythm 3 months ago and I still don't have it.
They keep blaming Pac Bell. Anybody had similar problems with
Rhythm? How long did it take you to get a DSL line from PacBell?

5/10 Speaking of old games, how do I slow down old games on a faster
PII or PIII machine? Old == games designed for 8088 or a 286?
        \_ moslo
           \_ what exactly is moslo?
\_ it's a little erratic (can make games jumpy) but I
think it's the best thing available, allows you to
specify % of processor speed to use for a (dos) game.
\_ Try looking it up on http://www.google.com
              \_ http://www.hpaa.com/moslo
2000/5/10-11 [Recreation/Computer/Games] UID:18231 Activity:high
5/10 This is a question for soda RPG fans. What are some good, hardcore
RPGs to buy (old games ok, naturally). I am thinking maybe the
Wizardry Archives... Anyone have any thoughts on how good wizardry
games are? Are there other recommendations?
\_ Wizardry was pretty cool. Rumor has it it was written in Pascal.
Also, Ultima series, Pool of Radiance, other SSI type of Dungeons
           and Dragon Games.
\_ Ultima 4 and 5, maybe 6. 3 on my old mac was good.
Wizardry and SSI games, yes. You can get an SSI games
collection that has about 12 games in it, maybe 6-8 worth
playing, but even moslo won't help on a pentium, with those.
           Bard's Tale 3. Maybe Darksun (1, not 2). Fallout /
Fallout 2 if you don't mind futuristic stuff. Betrayal at
Krondor was very good and is now freely downloadable. -niloc
\_ I generally agree especially Ultima 3,4,5 and Wizardry and
SSI games. I forgot about Bard's Tale.
        \_ GOLDBOX!
        \_ DAGGERFALL!
\_ Sorcerer. 100% spell absorbtion, shield spell, point at
ground, launch fireball. Infinite mana. Thus infinite
shields, healing, etc. Tough character to start but a
                   cake walk after that.
\_ The ol' Hellfire Warrior from SSI, very early 80's on the Apple
           IIe
\_ You don't know anything about Apple //'s until you've played
              Montazuma's Revenge.
\_ Out of the recent stuff, Fallout I and II. Download patches.
                -muchandr
\_ Planescape: Torment beats the utter crap out of any other
RPG released within the past few years. -blojo
\_ I agree, it was brilliant. I forgot to mention it.
But Fallout was good. I'd rank it second, of recent
                 games. -niloc
           \_ Wasteland!

5/10 Any good south bay/peninsula/southeast bay (Fremont/Newark, etc.)
dining places with good food, service, and a good place for a "date"?
\_ I had a good time at Nijo Castle in fremont. Its more of a
           Benihana clone though.
\_ I liked the food at Nijo Castle better, but the "show" is better
at Benihana's if you want to see the flashy cooking style. --oj
\_ Nijo Castle is not a good "date" place if you want to have
a private conversation though. At least not at the
teppanyaki table. And I thought it was too expensive
compared to other teppanyaki places. -cheap date

5/10 Is it just me, or there are simply not enough plugs for the modern
        world?
\_ wouldn't it be nice to have wireless batteries or wireless power?
           (ludicrous)
\_ you mean like the sun isn't wireless power?
\_ Solar panels on every roof! And a wind turbine that
sounds like a jet plane in every back yard! Uuuugly.

5/10 Anybody have experience planting/growing a ginkgo biloba tree?
I'm planning to grow several around my house. I'm wondering if
there are any gotchas with those types of trees.
\_ Make sure to get a male plant. Female plants STINK TO HIGH
HEAVEN. This is true of ginkgo plants in general. -- ilyas
\_ Tell us of the stars, ilyas....
\_ ok I'll bite. What about the stars and ilyas?
I see this dog him everywhere. What is up?
\_ there was a wall conversation where he was claiming
that stars might be sentient beings. -tom
\_ Stars are sentient beings. -John
\_ Unfortunately not every anonymous idiot who posts on
                         the motd is.
\_ there was a really cool quote in Don Quixote that
went something like "who is crazier? the one who
claims that they might be giants, or the one who
absolutely refuses to believe that there is a
possibility they might be?" sorry for butchering it. -ali
\_ Did the obvious band use this reference, or is their
                         name a coincidence?
\_ The 't' is 'they', not 'there'
\_ sort of. apparently, they got it from a sherlock
                            holmes-in-the-modern-world movie in the 70s,
which is pretty cool flic. after reading,
                            http://www.tmbg.org/band-info/faq i'm wondering
if i ever saw that quote in cervantes book or if
i saw it in the movie. -ali
\_ I'm pretty sure it was from the movie. At least,
it was definitely said by George C. Scott in the
                           movie. -tom

5/10 I am getting a PC to play games, run quicken and surf the net.
Should I specify Win 98 SE or Windows 2000 (no price difference)?
Would Windows 2000 give me the same functionality but a little
more stability? My current Win95 system crashed way too often.
\_ Win98SE if you want to play lots of games. Not all games
           work under W2K.
\_ My experience dual-booting both has been that 98 is less
unstable than W2k. Even IE is flakey under win2k...
\_ Are you mad? 98 is total crap. w2k has issues but
nothing like 98. 98 is _only_ good for games. I disabled
the net for my 98 install because it's such a POS. Most
games will do ok under w2k, but not all. As newer games
comes out, more and more will run under w2k.
\_ My experience is Win2K is much stabler than 98/98 SE.
I never want to go back to 98 again.
\_ Also keep in mind that there are 98 programs that may
not work correctly on W2k so you may be out of luck until
they put out an update. Personally I'd stay with W98SE
                 unless there's a reason you want W2k.
\_ Buy the playstation 2 for games. Don't buy a PC. Buy
a Mac for surfing the net and running quicken.
\_ The playstation is only good for twitch games. There are
tons of non-twitch games for the PC that don't exist for
the PS and probably never will. The Mac? Stop trolling.
        \_ macs rule. pppplllllt!
