3/12 Anybody know what this number does? x3-7907 (510-643-7907).
        Odd behaviour.
        \_ What does it do?
\_ Interesting. If you press numbers after it picks-up it will echo
           them back to you.
\_ If you speak loudly or whistle, it will also echo.
How would i find out what it does? Can i call the campus
telecom office? Or would they just shut it down w/o telling
me what it does? I am very curious about it.
And what is that sequence of tones it plays right after
               it picks up? Hmmm...
\_ Yeah, it's weird. The tones are most likely DTMF (numbers).
There are programs that take sound files of DTMF and display
which numbers they represent. -- peterl
\_ Dude, seriously, I just have a box hooked up to my dorm
phone. Stop calling. You're screwing up my project.
\_ Hmm, pardon my skepticism, but uh, if it really is
your number (it doesnt show up in my directory by
the way), what does it do? Thanks.
\_ It's a psych experiment to see how many geeks I can
get to try to hack a simple echo box.
\_ That's my dorm phone number.
        \_ How'd you find it?
\_ I posted it on usenet.

3/12 What are good intro./ref. on the net for perl with emphasis on
www related programing among the zillion found by search engines?

3/12 There's bad movies. There's really bad movies. Then there's
        Mission To Mars.
\_ Figure anything they didn't bother advertising more than a week
in advance wasn't going to be a big winner.
\_ Which explains Pitch Black, but I've seen ads for MTM for quite a
              while now.
\_ I saw both, pitch black wasn't good but it was brilliant
compared to MTM. At least pitch black didn't have all
                   those formulaic Deep Moments(tm).
\_ Agreed. Pitch Black wasn't great by any stretch of the
imagination, but far more enjoyable. And the planet
coming from the horizon was fricking pretty.
\_ I've only seen em for a few weeks and they didn't really
make the movie look that good. "Oh hey theres this face thing
on Mars and like you know the gubbment was hiding it and
like we didnt build it but like uhm someone did so like uh
hey cool come pay $8.50 to see this!!! and buy the toys
too!!" Dont think so. Been burned too many times.

3/13 So much bitterness in the motd. I just wanted to say I personally
love you all, even those of you that hate on me. You should just
all relax, take a chill pill, and go for walk in this beautiful
        weather we are experiencing. --sky/Christ
\_ Can't we all just get along?
\_ WE LOVE YOU SKYLER! AND YOU TOO JESUS!
\_ I am not bitter. Screw you all.
\_ Of course you are. That's why we like you.

        too funny

\_ I can't remember... is the term from cyberpunk or shadowrun?
\_ I've seen it in early works from both but don't know which
was first. I'm guessing the cyberpunk stuff.
\_ William Gibson you illiterate idiots.
\_ Specifically, this was the big bad stuff that
attacks our hero, Case, in Neuromancer.
\_ WG is hardly the height of mandatory reading for the
educated individual. Some of his stuff is amusing,
                           but he's not Shakespear.
\_ No, that was fair (I was the one who asked)
I've read neuromancer, but the earlier /
salient memory was of an rpg.
                           \_ Or Shakespeare either.
\_ Sorry. I've read nothing but the best for
the last 10 years. Gibson all the way!

3/13 How much would you spend on having someone detail your car? (car with
paint protection and leather seats) Should you take it to the dealer
where you bought the car? Thx - jthoms
\_ I wouldn't. Maybe if I thought it would boost the price a bit for
a consumer resale or I'd get laid with a nicer car when I was
picking up my new super model girlfriend on a first date.
           \_ traditonal sports-car pickup line:
"Hey babe, wanna help buff my leather seats?"

3/13 What's up with Bill joy?
        http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2000/03/13/MN108057.DTL
\_ He's gone loopy and joined the church of the unabomber.
\_ He is too rich for loopy. He is 'eccentric.'
\_ They're in my brain! They're eating my braaaaaaaaaaaain!!!

3/13 At work each "phone" jack has an ethernet port, digital phone, analog
phone, and a fax port. Anybody know where I can get a jack like that?
I couldn't find it at homedepot. -trying to rewire my house.
\_ Just unscrew the one at work. (Someone else's office)
\_ http://www.l-com.com sells just about every possible connector or
cable for many different applicaqtions. they should have
whatever jack you need, and i think they can do online orders
           via web.
\_ Did you look in the catalogs? (http://www.blackbox.com for example)
        \_ under your desk? *grin*
\_ I liked it better when the area admin was under my desk.
