3/9 Anyone know how I can get stock quotes through a TCP/IP socket,
rather than through a web page?
\_ Open a TCP/IP connection to port 80 of a quotes web server.

        \_ ~abe/bin/asst ~abe/bin/ast
        \_ rand();

therefore it must be bad. GREEN DAY! uh huh...
\_ Uh, I was born way before the 80's ...
                                \_ 1978 maybe?
\_ What's the unifying characteristics of 80s music?
\_ Better than 70's and 90's music and you can dance
                           to most of it.

3/10 Is there still a difference between US and int'l encryption on
        browsers?
Yes. I'm assuming you know what the difference is, but if you don't,
I'd be glad to explain it. -dans
\_ Maybe not. I thought only US version is 128 bit strong
encryption but now it seems that int'l version is also like
that. Does that have to do with the recent legislation?
\_ Ah, I forgot. Recent legislation allows companies to
export strong encryption on a case by case basis. I'm
unfortunately not aware of the gory legal details. What
you suggest sounds quite possible though. -dans
\_ Once again we see dans mouthing off about something he knows nothing
           about....
\_ You nuked my response to this as well as someone's followup
comment stating that it wasn't legislation, but executive
action, and that it hadn't gone into effect yet. You also
nuked my response to your asanine comment pointing out that
              1) My original reponse, that the difference still exists is
correct and 2) I very clearly stated that I am uncertain of
the gory legal details. Either add something useful or piss

of maturity in this sober and reserved

eat, where does the food go after it digests?
\_ The *real* question is: how does the user
that movie did. And now that it has a
mouth, what would it say with such an
                                  uncomfortable object up it's ASS??
\_ Thanks for answering my queries regarding
the lack of mouth and where the food goes
when it digests. I notice that
the pig is now dead and cooked. So does
that mean the guy with the head in the
pig can eat his way out now?
                                   breathe?
\_ I also have another question, i forgot to
ask before: why does the pig have an "n"
for ears? I thought pigs had more pointy
and large ears -- at least the one in
that movie did. I did not realize pigs
could talk until I saw that movie. Since
this pig now has a mouth, what would it
say with such an uncomfortable object up
                                  it's ASS??
\_ Also, thanks for answering my queries
regarding the lack of mouth and where
the food goes when it digests. I notice
that the pig is now dead and cooked. So
does that mean the guy with the head in
the pig can eat his way out now?
\_ More importantly, where do you stick the apple
                               when you cook it?
\_ dans, you are truly the van gogh of our generation.
\_ Can I have his spare ear?
\_ Wow, dans, you sure showed me with that ancient ascii 'art'
rip off. Your lame rip off doesn't make you any less stupid
or ignorant. If you spent more time on issues like the
problem with the treasurer or the mail spools rather than
posting crap to the motd and proving your manhood by signing
your garbage then maybe someone would have some respect for
you instead of pissing down your throat on the motd
everyday. You reap what you sow. By signing you show not
that you're a real studboy but that you take the motd too
seriously and are just a twit and an incompetent imbecile
incapable of performing the most basic duties of the office
you voluntarily ran for. Do your job. No one gives a shit
                   if you sign your filth.
\_ Fuck you, you twink. Problem with treasurer: he doesn't
read his soda mail, and I solve this how? Force him to
read his e-mail with the evil e-mail water cure torture?
I don't think so. Impeach him? Who's going to replace
him? You? Are you even eligible for the politburo?
Even if you are, you won't even claim responsibility for
your posts on the motd, so why the hell should anyone
expect you to be any better as treasurer? In light of
the situation, mikeh and I did the best thing possible:
we routed around it. Note our repeated admonitions to
send inquiries regarding donations to one of us, not
                      twohey.
                      Problem with the mail spools:
                      Short term answer:
                      a) I don't have root. b) machines have been the VP's
domain for a long time. mikeh and the other root staff
do a damn good job of managing things. I'm not going to
step on their toes by madly gzipping offender's
mailspools and dropping them in their home directories.
If that's the right thing to do in this situation, then
the root staff will do it. It's their decision. a) if
there is a different solution (i.e. reducing mail
quotas), they'll pursue it, but, regardless, it remains
                      their decision.
                      Long term answer:
Get more disk. Duh. I'll repeat what I've said before:
There's talk of a soda upgrade. Because we don't know
the exact kind of disk (SCSI, duh, but what kind of
SCSI?) we'll be using, we're not going to rush out and
buy a disk to solve today's mail spool problem if we
can't use it in new soda a month from now. Until either
soda gets upgraded or we decide it's not going to
happen, buying a disk is out of the question. If
someone has a spare disk they can donate, that might
help, but most of the offers we've seen have been
to buy or supply funds for the purchase of a disk.
As important to the CSUA as soda is, soda != CSUA, and
my job is not to baby sit it. If you want to criticize
the job I've done as prez, try actually reading the
job description first (it's in the CSUA constitution).
I don't sign my posts because I believe in owning my
words. I do it independent of the medium. I suppose
you must have difficulty owning your words, seeing as
                      they're all shit. -dans
P.S. No rip-off, it's straight out of the CSUA
Encyclopedia. Frankly I think the subsequent
                      discussion is damned funny.
\_ Have some balls. Impeach him, give someone else the
opportunity to do it. An empty office is better
than a do-nothing office. As far as the CSUA
Constitution goes, I wrote parts of it. I think I
know what it says. Don't use a piece of paper to
hide your ineffective cowardess. Stand up and do
the right thing. "It's not my job!" is the lamest
weakest cop-out ever given. Make it your job! Those
who came before and will be coming after will
appreciate it. Don't be another worthless resume
                           stuffing figurehead.

3/10 What's "unix clustering"?
\_ Short answer: having a bunch of machine with same config and some
\_ Short answer: having a bunch of machines with same config and some
'clustering software' that makes it so these machines are all
redundant backups for each other and also share horsepower for
things like cpu, io, etc. There's more than one type of clustering
and quality, price, features, etc vary widely between vendors,
versions, etc, but this is the gist of it for laymen.
\_ Mainstream products that do "clustering" are almost
always failover systems. Parallel processing is much
rarer. Sun and Veritas both have clustering products.
                -brianm
              \_ clustering >> failover.
a cluster normally handles "failover", but a failover
solution does not neccessarily do clustering.
A [group of] system[s] that is purely a "failover system"
                 is NOT a "cluster"
\_ Guys, I was trying to just get the main idea across and
not start a lengthy shitfest over the details. Thanks.
\_ For me clustering involves non-trivial degree of communication
between the nodes, ie tightly-coupled cluster vs. a simple
server farm. Most people use the two terms interchangeably, though.

non-ascii file, say a .swf, .gif, or .jpeg, will it send out
the binary stream, or in MIME base 64 format? I realize my
question might not make sense and would appreciate some url
        that quickly enlightens me. Thanks.
\_ telnet://localhost:80 (assuming that by "server" you mean "web
           server")
\_ The server sends all of the interesting headers, including the
Content-type: header, and then the file, as it exists on the
           disk. --dbushong

3/10 if we have servlets on one machine <Mercury)
how do we get another machine (Zinc) to forward the requests
get the results, and post to client via http?
My boss threw around terms like Apache's proxy and http redirect.
I just want to know whether I'm on the right track. Thanks.
