11/18 I'm trying to install Java 1.2 but it doesn't work on my Solaris 5.6
box. According to the Sun site I need to download 15 megs of kernel
patch. Why the hell do I have to do this?
\_ because threading is slightly broken in 5.6.
If you can, get a list of the patches. You might already have
one or more of them installed. |

11/18 So what's up with needing a compiler to install gcc? If i had one
i wouldn't need gcc. Also, anyone know where i can download Korn
or Bash for a Sun Ultra 5 running SunOS 5.7 (without a compiler!)
-new to this stuff.
\_ you need a compiler to bootstrap the compiler you want to make
from source. e.g. the gnu binaries cd will have one. you can
also download binaries from http://www.sunfreeware.com
\_ man pkgadd helps too
\_ Korn is already on Solaris - /bin/ksh
\_ Hand coded assembly. Wimp. |

11/18 Sick and tired of using emacs, vi, and pico. Are there any good
(powerful) Java editors around? Thanks.
\_ Editors for writing Java, or editors written in Java?
\_ No.
\_ I like IBM's VisualAge/Java:

11/18 Trevor strikes again in ucb.class.cs61c, this time bragging
about his relations with women.
\_ He is amusing, gotta give him that. But it begs the question:
is he abusive and harrassing only in front of a computer
screen (like many a motd'er), or is he like this in person?
\_ Personally, I think this Trevor guy is a fictional
character. Nobody (either in person or on the newsgroup)
could be so obnoxious and vulgar (not even in the CSUA).
\_ Once again proved that he's dork with his half baked
Japanese
\_ What did his japanese say?
\_ Trevor is my lover! Trevor has got more game than all you geeks
combined! -movie star/model/actress with 4.0 GPA in love with TB.
\_ Trever is gay! He just brags about women to make is BF's jealous.
\_ This may be an ignorant question, but shouldn't someone from the
class staff or even Prof. Culler himself should yank him out of
the class or better yet, have the University expel him for vulgarism
on a public (class) newsgroup? Or do they just don't give a fuck?
\_ Why should they care? By expelling him or taking other
action, they'd be giving him the attention he craves. Does
he have a soda account? He'd be a fun addition to the motd.
\_ Why? He's an excellent student and the caliber of student that
we here at Cal admire. Plus, he's loaded so we don't have to
give him financial aid. |

11/18 In this day and age, is it really worth getting a Masters in C.S.?
Esp. those with experience already.
\_ Yes and no. There are pros and cons
\_ Well put.
\_ Do you want to wave that degree around like some big dick, or
just use the time to get more experience and $$$ ?
\_ why, to wave it around like some big dick of course! What
else would you use it for? I'm sure the paper it's printed
on is probably too coarse for use as toilet paper.... |

11/18 Bet your junior prom wasn't like this:
http://tube.mit.edu/~marco/JuniorProm.jpg
\_ Some of the others in the same directory are worth a click.
\_ damn they're gone now.
\_ limbo was classic. Someone's mom is really proud right
about now seeing her bimbo daughter's pic on the net drunk
with no panties doing the limbo for a camera.
\_ Damn those kids looked young. Sure it wasn't Jr. High prom?
or am I just getting too old?
\_ Had to be junior high. No fucking way those were 16 year olds.
The girl didn't even have PH#1 yet.
\_ what?
\_ "Pubic Hair #1". |

11/18 What's the max. 401(k) contribution limit for tax years 1999 and
2000? Thx.
\_ Unless something's changed, it's $10k
\_ That's what I heard too, but on page 3 of
http://ftp.fedworld.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p560.pdf it says the limit
is $6k. What gives?
\_ Are you working for a small business that only offers a
Simple 401k?
\_ Yeah, about 20 employees, and the employer doesn't match
my contribution.
\_ if the employer doesn't match, according to that 560 pub
it's not a SIMPLE 401k. it's probably a normal one
and 10k limit. -oj
\_ I see. Thanks.
\_ Be careful. That word does not mean what you think it means.
(Where the IRS is concerned nothing is simple, and a Simple
401k is more complicated than simply a standard 401k.)
\_ What if I'm married and filing tax jointly with my working
spouse?
\_ Ask HR or a CPA - much more reliable than the motd.
\_ For 1999 it was $10,000, for 2000 it has been increased to $10,500

11/18 I'm trying to test out smbclient with a friend of mine but I keep
getting this error message:
$ echo hello | smbclient -M my.friends.ip
Added interface ip=192.168.8.5 bcast=192.168.8.255 nmask=255.255.255.0
session request failed
Does the other computer have to be in the same subnet for samba
to work?
\_ I've never got -M to work. Try -L to list his shares. No it will
cross subnets, routers, switches, hubs, gateways, etc, no problem.
Check the samba docs for the 'official' way to test a connection.
\_ naw, it did the same thing. But it did at least give out
an IP address this time.
\_ Firewalls? Can you ping? Is he exporting any shares?
Does he have the "Server" service running on the 'd0ze side?
\_ no, no firewalls. he and his roomate have a multiple
ip dsl line and they both can see each other's windoze
services. i can't for some reason. i'm behind a
linux firewall though.
\_ Turn off firewall and try again.
\_ http://us1.samba.org/samba/ftp/docs/textdocs/DIAGNOSIS.txt
is real useful whenever I'm trying to find out what I've done wrong
\_ That's the thing I was refering to earlier but was too lazy
to find. "the official way to test a connection". Anyway,
since we haven't heard back, he either gave up or it was the
firewall.
\_ Well, I tried it from the gateway itself (no natd or
IP masq) and turned off all the firewall rules and
I got the same error messages. So yes, I did give up.
\_ smbclient -L HIS.IP.ADDRESS doesn't give a password
prompt after saying session failed? It sounds like
there's something really simple going on. Minor
config error. |
