9/27 Is there any sort of "acroread" that will display a pdf file on a
        tty terminal?
\_ ghostscript can read PDF's - maybe it has a crude pdf2ascii like
          the ps2ascii
          \_ why not just pipe it through a pdf2ps | ps2ascii

9/27 Anyone successfully installed ssh on FreeBSD 3.3?
\_ just copy the binaries straight from soda.
        \_ sh ./configure ; make ; make install ; ssh-keygen ; ssh http://blah.com
\_ cd /usr/ports/security/ssh; make install; make clean
\_ it didn't work on my sys. Something about rsaref not
able to compile. How do I update the ports list?
        \_ use the source luke.

9/28 /csua/tmp/aspo/utdemo338.exe
\_ It has a virus. Thanks.
\_ You are a disease. Meet the cure.
         \_ uhhh, no it doesn't
\_ Get a new virus scanner. It has a virus. Anyway, it's stupid
to run some random .exe from a random fool's account when the
original file is available from known sources on the net.
\_ I did. It doesn't. (Not to mention that I dled it from
one of the offical dl sites and if it had a virus you
would be hearing all over the net about it.) I put it
up cause yesterday it was damn hard to get a copy. If
you don't trust it get another copy somewhere, but that
                   copy is virus free. -aspo
\_ Look it's obviously a troll since the poster insists
on calling it "a virus" twice instead of naming it.
\_ *LAUGH* Thank god you're not working in the IT
dept at my company. "He didn't tell us which one
so he must be lying. Go ahead and load it up on
the corporate mail server!" *LAUGH* God damn, if
that isn't the dumbest thing to hit the motd in
                           the last 3 days.
\_ It's obvious to *you* it's a virus. Only an idiot would
copy it from your account, instead of a known source on
the net, which you're not. If you're wrong and it does
have a virus, who suffers? I do. You can't honestly
claim it's %100 virus free. Only that the one or two
outdated checkers you're using don't know about it.

9/28 http://www.mccain2000.com
        \_ McCain sucks, read ~danh/McCain.txt - danh
\_ Dan, you're such an idiot. This is such complete trash. It
more than oozes bias. It bleeds bias. Anyone who'd vote for
or against *any* candidate based on this type of drivel doesn't
deserve the privilege of voting. You, Sir, are an idiot.
\_ it was the sort of puff piece you see in the newspapers of
berkeley communists. I could do a much more interesting
              one on Gore. -jor
\_ the election is already over, dummies. Now get back to
                 your keyboard.
\_ Yes, Dan Quayle is going to be the first successful
write-in victory, everyone knows that, but that doesn't
                    save danh from babbling spew.
\_ Yes mcCain does suck, he wants to pass a law enabling the government
to ban and/or censor video games it finds offensive.
Video game programmers have alot to worry.
All interested parties check out - http://www.gamepac.com
\_ Maybe, but dan's garbage isn't the basis for a decision.
                   \_ I didn't even read danh's file. I'm intending to go into
the video game industry upon graduation. I think
all CS or EECS students who enjoyed games like DOOM
etc.. should be jumping out of thier seats at the
prospect that their future work could be outlawed
just because a group of people find it offensive.
Basically, its a scary scenario, and I'm actually
                      quite worried.
\_ Oh? My future work is gang style executions in
public places. And you know what? Those fascist
government thugs want to ban my future career! They
actually want to make it *illegal*!!! Would you
believe that?! They must, therefore, be evil.
\_ I guess you don't remember the PRMC, do you?
\_ geez a little touchy aren't you all - danh
\_ Stupidity almost makes me touchy. If you're going to
advocate some politcal position, pro or con, at least
try to base it on something that isn't such blatantly
obvious crap. Hell, I don't know a thing about McCain,
but your babbling piece from your friend was certainly
more offensive and intellectually bankrupt and insulting
than anything he might be proposing.
1999/9/28-30 [Politics/Foreign/Asia/China, Politics/Foreign/Europe] UID:16613 Activity:low
9/28 If my passport is stolen while I am traveling in Europe what do I have
to do besides reporting the incident to the local authorities and the
US embassy in the country? And, will I be able to quickly (like in a
day or two) to get a temporary passport to continue on with my travel
around continent or will my trip be screwed over?
\_ I had mine stolen in Poland. It took three weeks to get a new
passport and visa. Just don't let anyone steal the thing.
\_ my friend got her passport stolen in Paris. the experience
                        will probably
\_ My mom got hers stolen in China. Really messy situation. You should
be worried about whether you can get back to the US sometime soon.
The bureaucracy you have to deal is going to take a long time if you
           don't know the right people.
\_ Crime?! In China?! This would never happen.

9/28 Hi -- say Im using apache+openssl, but Im using basic (not digest)
http authentication for a dir under https; is that initial password
transaction encryped over ssl? In other words, do I make basic http
auth more secure (non-sniffable) by using openssl, or am I still
screwed. Yes, I could sniff the packets, but Im lazy:)
\_ Get your lazy ass outta your chair, pick up your Visa, and buy
           Stronghold!
\_ apache+openssl is working fine and free -- I just had the
above question, that's all. Do ya know the answer?
\_ And illegal in the US, but who cares about that...
\_ if you're too damn lazy to run "tcpdump 443 | strings", you
\_ They can have my STRONG CRYPTO when they pry
it out of my cold, dead hands!!!!~@~@!!!@~@!@!
\_ You'd be the first to give up your strong crypto
when the MIB show at your door. Talk is cheap.
\_ It's not the men in black coming after you
it's RSA's lawyers with patent infringement
                                   lawsuits.
\_ What color suits do lawyers tend to wear
                                      these days?
\_ if you're too damn lazy to run "tcpdump port 443 | strings", you
deserve to get hacked, then fired.
\_ I think a more important issue (it turns out) is client
caching of the password, so it's a bad idea anyway....
\_ I thought it was legal as long as you didn't use any of the
patented crypto code like idea and rsa. --marc
\_ I refuse to use anything unless my use is considered a
violation of patent, copyright, or arms control laws.

9/27 Oh gosh! You didn't like the motd, so you wiped it? All of it?
Next time just try 'touch ~/.hushlogin'. The motd is optional.
You don't have to read it if you don't want to. Some of us do.
Here's the motd you wiped out for no particular reason.

        their hands.
\_ The ubitquous Yellow Lump ad campaign is the doing of Doktor Jones
          \_ You mean ubiquitous, right?
\_ Yellow Lump is unprocessed sugar. I am told it is used in Chinese
           cooking. -- ilyas
