9/21 What is a journaling file system (e.g. BeOS?) ?
\_ I work on one (VxFS), if you want you can mail me. --aaron
\_ If you know anything about databases, it's just a transaction log.
           (inodes, directory structures, etc.).
Some versions log all changes to all blocks on disks, others just
to the filesystem structure (inodes, directory structures, etc.).
           Either way, no more fsck'ing.
\_ But isn't that a Log file system? Whats the diff
between a journaling FS and a Log FS?
                        \_ Jargon.
                        \_ Different companies, different products,
                                same concept.
\_ A journalling file system *contains* a log that it can
use (like databases) to recover after crashes. A log-
structured file system *is* a log -- it doesn't actually
store your files anywhere except the log. This means
read performance is often significantly worse than with
                      an ordinary filesystem.

                      Journalling file systems are in wide commercial use;
log-structured file systems are a (dead, AFAIK) research
                      area.
\_ log-structured file systems are useful for media like
flash memory which are have high erase/overwrite
                         overhead.

9/21 I started selling "widget" (will not say what it is) on EBay for
the last couple of months on the side and have made a lot of
money. Is that considered income, and is that technically
taxable? -EBay guy with 250+ rating
\_ let's rephrase this: "I'm making money selling stuff,
is that considered making money? and is this subject to
is this considered making money? Is it subject to
           the tax on making money?"
\_ Generally, if it were important enough to the IRS, they'd
let you know. So go ahead and sell, if you're doing something
           wrong, they'll let you know.
\_ That could prove to be a very expensive lesson in US Tax Code.
\_ Hey, I'm making money selling yer mom's special 'services'
and am reporting and paying tax on it.
\_ If you have to ask, you should hire a tax professional.
probably be charging sales tax too.

9/22 Whoever's still rearranging the motd. Don't do it. Really.
\_ I've almost got it nailed. Between some diffs, some perl, and
some other stuff, I'll have it narrowed pretty quick. I've got
it down to about 15 potential squishable pricks right now.
\_ isn't a possibility that whenever you are in motdedit, and you
save, you overwrite changes last made since you opened the
editor? that's not quite intentional censorship.
\_ we're not talking about censorship, we're talking about moving
the replies around, which some nimrod has been doing
\_ Why don't we just have the motd go away? Maybe that would
           force people to make sense.
\_ I'll bet that the Chinese government is involved somehow.
\_ No. It's that the CSUA legal system is fucked. I came over
here to make money and have no fear/respect of the Politburo.
I can rearrange the motd without fear in the CSUA. In China,
I'd be imprisoned for life or shot for this.
\_ That's what kchang thought, too. AND WHERE IS HE TODAY,
                 SMARTY-BOY????
                 \_ http://www.cs/~kchang
\_ If we're lucky, under a pile of rubble in Taiwan.

\_ No. It isn't an accident. It's very clear some little
                   soon-to-be-squished prick is intentionally re-arranging
replies. The longer they continue and the more often they
do it, the easier they'll be to catch and I'll have logs
to prove it. Bye bye csua account after that, I'm sure.
