6/30 Someone please post a pointer to a damn how-to doc which explains what the new secure soda setup will be like, and what steps a typical user (either linux, windoze, or mac) will need to take to log in after the change. Put the pointer in motd.official and save a gazillion instances of the damn 'what do I do?' questions we've been having. \_Isn't this pretty simple? All you have to do is get a ssh client instead of a regular telnet client. If you have firewall problems, talk to your sysadmin to open up the ssh port. That's it. If you have problems you can email me. I thought that this was CSUA, aren't you supposed to know how to do this? williamc |

6/30 I'd like to get a good ISP. What is a good ISP that has the most number of newsfeeds (big hard drive), has a lot of dial-in numbers (in SF and LA area)? Price is not an issue. Thanks. |

07/01 Around 10-10:30am this morning, a water main in/near evans hall broke causing loss of power in evans, evacuation, and reportedly some damage to equipment in evans. This caused a large number of problems including cutting campus off from any external network access as well as cutting many parts of cmapus off from one another. At this time, basic netowrk connectivity appears to have been restored though some services such as the campus newserver are not up yet. Many Thanks to the those people who must have worked like hell to get the network back up so quickly. --jon |

7/1 Ding dong, the net is dead! \_ Its alive again! \_ I miss the old motd. \_ I thought only Berkeley was down .... \_ Evans Hall must have finally crumbled. It was bound to happen sooner or later. \_ Actually, the hearst mining renovation crew broke a water pipe and washed it all away. \_ We should start the annual CSUA surfing contest today. \_ But surfing is all I do at work these days... \_ I surf and play Kingdoms. |
