3/30 Wouldn't it be strange that someone smart enough to write such a
"cool" virus as Melissa is stupid enough to not remove any ID from
        the file?
\_ How do you know the ID belongs to the melissa creator?
\_ Exactly, that's my point. But the FBI seems to think otherwise.
\_ It's the FBI and CIA! How can they possibly be wrong?
\_ any moron could have written that virus, and any dufus now can
modify it from source code to wreak more destructive havoc. MS
will pay for gaping, obvious holes in Office 97 macro security.

3/30 The most important thing in the programming language is the name. A
language will not succeed without a good name. I have recently
invented a very good name and now I am looking for a suitable language.
-- D. E. Knuth, 1967
\_ So which language did it turn out to be?
                \_ Visual Basic?
\_ do people here really not know who don knuth is? TeX.
\_ How is TeX a programming language?
\_ How is TeX not a programming language? -nick

3/30 The motd needs some comic relief. How about one of those flames
by '(fucker)'? He's one fucked up funny dude.
        \_ go away. --fucker
\_ Lame impersonation... did you think of that all by yourself?
And I'm not fucked up... you all are fucked up sick
foetusfuckers marching around with your hoary ass like faces
talking through your sphincters bringing new meaning to "eat
shit" and, see, I give the public what they want, and what
do you have to say about that, colostomycritter? -(fucker)
\_ You really make me smile. :-) Soda needs more
foul mouthed fuckers like you. It would be a much
                   better place. -(fucker)'s #1 fan

3/30 Is the US doing anything to keep the remains of the crashed stealth
fighter in Yugoslavia from falling into the Serbs' or the Russians'
\_ They've sent in psb. Fear not.
\_ They seem to be trying to shrug it off as unimportant. The
news showed video of Serbs' jumping up and down on it, so
           it's certainly been rummaged through.
1999/3/31-4/1 [Computer/SW/Languages/Java] UID:15672 Activity:insanely high
3/30 Can someone name the 7 Wonders of the World?
        \_C++,Java,Pascal,Cobol,Smalltalk,VB,Fortran _
\_No way man. Cobol and VB don't deserve to be in the same list as
            C++ and Java.
                \_ Java? What a joke!
\_ Java, nice toy, don't leave your browser with it.
            \_ It's a wonder Cobol still exists...
\_ There's more cobol out there than C, C++, and Java
combined. Next time do a little research before sticking
your huge foot in your gaping mouth. Have you ever even
*seen* any cobol? Could you identify a cobol program if
it was clearly labelled, "COBOL CODE FOR RUNNING YOUR
BANK" at the top and bottom of every page?
\_ I challenge you to back up that statement. More
Windows applications have been written in the last 10 years
than all the years before combined.
\ Colossus of Rhodes, Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, Pyramids of Giza,
Lighthouse of Alexandria, Hanging gardens of Babylon,
Temple to Zeus, and library of alexandria. I think.
\_ Are any of these still standing/impressive to visit?
              \_ Just the pyramids
\_ What was the question, 7 natural wonders or 7 historical wonders??
has historical & natural & others.
\_ I thought the Great Wall in China was one of them. No?
\_ Someone has been playing a bit too much Civ. Yes? -- ilyas
\_ Sleepy, Happy, Dopey, Bashful,...can't name the other 3.
\_ Sneezy, Grumpy, and Doc, I'm pretty sure.
\_ Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
\_ I'll show you seven... inches!!
                \_ That's it?
                   \_ Sorry, didn't clarify. I meant flacid.
\_ My clit is bigger than that you little girl!
1999/3/31-4/1 [Computer/SW/Languages/Perl] UID:15673 Activity:insanely high
3/30 Can root install the lastest version of perl?
        \_ Yes.
        \_ % mail root
        \_ It's already installed. Use /usr/local/bin/perl, not /usr/bin/perl
\_ Why are two different versions installed?
                \_ because freebsd is stupid
\_ Because soda is running a 2 year old version of FreeBSD,
when perl4 shipped as part of the OS and was "perl" and
perl5 was an option to be installed in /usr/local/bin?
Of course, if it were Linux, it would have been the
latest broken beta sitting in /bin/perl --dbushong
              \_ former = perl5, latter = perl4
\_ which doesn't answer the question. Why are two
different versions installed both as a binary named
'perl'? Why not put 'perl4' in /usr/local/bin
instead of the confusing mess of having one version
down one path and another version down another path?
\_ Stop whining. You can always create sym links
in your bin directory and put your bin in front of
                       your path setting.
\_ Who's whining? Note that the question asked
was "why," which regrettably assumed there was
a valid reason (which apparantly there is).
Why is it whining to ask for people to answer
the question posed? I'm fully aware of how to
avoid the problem--however that wasn't the
question I asked. Thank you dbushong for
                          actually answering.
\_ Some people have confused a valid question with
whining to such a degree that they can either no
longer tell the difference or simply knee-jerk
their own whine about others' alleged whining.
                           Welcome to the motd.

3/31 A related question about Haas. How is the MBA program? Anybody
on soda in the program? I guess I'm looking for personal opinions
rather than "Haas ranked number 10 in such and such magazine". Any
comments on the people, professors, or classes? Of course Stanford
MBA is still my #1 choice. But I need to have a plan B.
\_ I know you are not looking for standard rankings, but the
           latest US News has one.
        \_ well, hello there, tawei.
\_ hello to you too. Care to comment on Haas MBA?
\_"Of course Stanford MBA is still my #1
choice. But I need to have a plan B."
So modest. Like we needed to know this. It's
bullshit like this that I hate, tawei. Just go
to Stanford, already, and leave the rest of us

TA, SC, Myth2, every other RTS - try the demo what do ya think?
\_ the demo was interesting. The unit AI still needs some work,
and path finding as always, but definit promise. A game I'll

3/31 I am interested in learning german. does anyone know of any cheap
                           \_ hook up with a German guy/gal !
classes in the east bay or elsewhere for basic german? adult
        schools, jc, etc...
        \_ hook up with a German guy/gal !
\_ "Hi! You look Germanic and if you're a native fluent
speaker who yearns to teach an eager younger computer
scientist your father tongue and an active interest in
getting laid on the side, I'd like to take you out! How
about it? Next Thursday around 2am in the WEB?"
\_ if you get more responses than you can handle, please
let me know . . . I'd like to learn German too!
\_ ah yes, the ins and outs of adult german...
\_ Learn from me, you can lose 20lbs in one week!!!!
Dude, why would you want to speak German. It's a horrible
language. In fact, it's not a language, it's a throat disease.
Trust me, I'm a native speaker. When you argue with a German
about this, they'll inevitably try to convince you of how
beautiful and elegant it is by pointing to the same three
or four books over and over again. It's ponderous, ugly-
sounding, and overly complex. Learn a nice language, or
something useful, like Spanish or French or even Italian.
Maybe something cool like Russian or Chinese or Japanese. But
don't put yourself through this trouble; German is awful, with
the culture to go with it. Aside from that, I'd be glad to
           help out with anything. -John
\_ I love to sodomize you in the WEB at 2am, John.

\_ Will you meet me in the WEB at 2am with some sex on the side?
\_ you oldtimers are showing your age. there has been no WEB
for the last 4 years or so.
\- What happened to the WEB???
\_ They filled it with Macs and turned the
OCF end into a Calculus-on-Computers lab
                                   for Math 1a/b.
\_ I love John. He's the bomb. But I also love German. Es macht
kuhl. Ja, stimmt Beavis! Feuer! Feuer! -space nazi
\_ They're dubbing South Park into Kraut. -John
           \_ What about Rilke, dude?
\_ Rainer Maria Rilke is about the epitome of
                   hitleriffically funny, light-hearted teutonic
literature. And no, you CAN'T sodomize me in the WEB,
I'm immune to such things. I kicked Roy out of pure
                   excitement while netsex-h0zing as a freshman at 2am;
he was sleeping under the table, and I thought he
was a backpack. You can't touch me. Nyah. -John
