03/05 As some of you may have noticed, ownerships in /csua/tmp were messed up. I have fixed the ownership of as many files as possible, but there are some that I have no idea to whom they belong; if your file is one of them, prove it, and let me know. --Jon |

3/05 How do 16-bit and 32-bit color schemes work? Which bits do what? Thanks. \_ 16: generally, either 5-5-5 (1 bit unused or alpha channel), 6-5-5, 5-6-5, or 5-5-6. 32: 8-8-8 (8 bits alpha). If you have really expensive hardware, sometimes 10-10-10. These are RGB implementations, obviously. You can also use the 16-bit value to reference a TrueColor (24/32 bits) palette. \_ Other strategies are separate 32-bit into 3 10-bit numbers, and then each number is an index into a different table to retrieve primary color value. Also, you have to consider possible double buffering. Not all systems use RGB either, your color model may be HSV. There are equivalent matrices to convert one color model to another. Also, note that there are perceivable colors not representable by a positive combination of RGB. possible double buffering and z-buffering. Not all systems use RGB either, your color model may be HSV. There are equivalent matrices to convert one color model to another. Also, note that there are perceivable colors not representable by a positive combination of RGB. \_ What is "alpha" then? Thanks again. \_ It provides a way to combine (or blend) RGB values together to achieve special effects such as transparency. In normal applications, pixel values are overwritten, but that does not have to be. You can combine old RGB value with new RGB value and blends them together. |

3/6 NASA has found water on the Moon, and predicts that human colonization of the Moon is now feasible. It was announced at a press conference yesterday morning. \_ yes, but how much? It didn't sound like much to me. \_ It's enough to support 1000 people for 100 years. \_ There used to be a lot more, but the secret Nazi moon base on the dark side of the moon used up most of it after Hitler decided to expand the base to four times its previous size back in the 60s. Damn Nazis. \_ I know you think this is funny, but this is nowhere near as hilarious as that apollo workstation thread a couple of days ago. my stomach still hurts from that. \_ This completes the circle, though. (Haven't you ever wondered where DomainOS _really_ came from?) \_ DOMAIN=Developed On Many Apollos Inside Nasa \_ That's what they'd _like_ you to think; the acronym is just nationalistic face-saving on the part of the USA. Just like how Werner Von Braun and the other Germans built up our space program, but "we" did it all . . . \_ You mean the Apollo entry was a lie? \_ Of course not. No one ever lies in the motd. \_ We know where domain/os came from. We also know where Windows NT came from. (Hint: Does "//machinename" look familiar? And we're talking years before URL's adopted the syntax from Domain/OS.) \_ Or... 10,000 people for 10 years... Not much. |
