10/31 I've got a file full of names of mp3 files that I want to delete.
Problem is that many are contain ', (, ), and other unlikeable
characters that make it hard to feed to a bash for loop or a
perl script. Is there any (perl?) function to autoescape that
        sort of thing? tia.
\_ Why not run the file through sed?

11/01 It turns out that http://www.electoral-vote.com is being run by Andrew
Tanenbaum. Yes, that very Andrew Tanenbaum. Who could have possibly
        thought it was him?
        http://www.electoral-vote.com/info/votemaster-faq.html
\_ Jesus fucking christ. I kept telling myself that this guy didn't
understand anything about statistics because he's just some
poly sci guy who's trying to figure it out on his own. As a
fellow physics major, I'm embarrased on his behalf now.
\_ Partisan much? He say something that doesn't toe your party
line so he's a moron? Uh huh. Grow up.

                   \_ yes, that guy.
\_ Sheesh. Give him a break. This is, bar none, the most informative
poll summary site out there, and it's free.
\_ so... what is his political slant?
           \_ see the URL above

11/1 I just saw Passion of the Christ last night. I'm not Christian and
I don't know much about it. Who are the guys in black carrying
staffs and trying to get the roman governor to crucify him? Why
was Jesus called a galean (sp?)? And what is with that fat guy
King Herod who had jurisdiction over galeans? He seems to share
power with the Roman governor, which is weird. If the elderly guys
in the black are Jews I can see why Jews would see the movie as
anti-semitic. The movie portrayed the romans as being forced into
killing Jesus. Otherwise there would be an uprising. Ok, thanks.
\_ Galilee is a place. Jesus was from around there. I haven't seen
the movie, but the main group wanting Jesus killed were the
powerful Jewish priests. The Romans didn't care too much about
a Jewish religious struggle, but they *did* care about order, and
some young radical threatening the establishment was no good. FWIW
I don't believe Pontius Pilate 'had it in' for Jesus, but the
historical record shows he was a pretty brutal dictator.
           -lapsed Episcopalian
\_ Pilate had no problems killing people ruthlessly. However he was
in a tough position. A riot that he squelched caused the Roman
emperor to basically say "one more of these and you're toast".
If he crucified Jesus and Jesus' followers rioted he was screwed.
If he didn't, there might be a riot from the people who wanted
Jesus dead. You can see how he'd want to avoid blame.
\_ Jesus never existed as described. There were many "Jesuses" and
stuff going on. The Jesus stuff really got going hundreds of
years after the supposed events. It's stupid to state "facts"
about Jesus because it's based on the gospels which are mostly
invented or derived from other events and religions.
\_ think about it. There were seperatists to an imperial controller.
Iesus preaches "no, do not hate, be peaceful." MLK said the same
thing and gets accused to corroboration with the Man. Watch Life
of Brian, it will get you a better perspective. The Middle East
has been fucked forever; it really needs a tac nuke.
           \_ ...tactical?
\_ I think he meant strategic.

11/01 Gotta love prop 71. Here in CA the crooks don't have to buy the
politicians, they can just put themselves on the ballot.
\_ Which one is that again?
\_ $3B bond for stem cell research. No oversight. Brown Act
              exemption. etc. etc.
\_ What's the Brown Act and why do they want an exemption?
\_ The Brown Act requires public policy meetings to be held in
a public forum and an agenda to be posted in advance. 71
also exempts the board which makes monetary decisions from
the public records act. If this passes, I may have to go
into biomed. Whoever gets this money will be set to life.
into biomed. Whoever gets this money will be set for life.
\_ Thanks for the info, I was already going to vote
no for other reasons, but makes it NO.
\_ My answer to any propositions that I didn't already know about and
actively agree with is a "no" vote by default. I fully understand
the meaning and implications (and holes) of maybe 1 or 2 per
election cycle which get a "yes". There are just too many which are
just too vague or have too much background info we don't see to
           vote "yes" on them.
\_ Don't do that. Many policy-makers know most people vote
like this, so they phrase the proposition so that a "no"
vote actually implements their proposed changes.

11/01 I can think of 2 reasons why a traditional Bush voter might want to
vote for Kerry this time around:
        1) Bush might be able to push 4 rightwing justices into the Supreme
Court and upset the balance, while Kerry can't push 4 leftwing
justices into the Supreme Court because the Senate is run by
        Republicans.
        2) Kerry will actually veto spending bills!
\_ You have to think of reasons? Why don't you just ask one of your
traditional Bush voter friends over lunch or something like that?
\_ I can think of X reasons why a traditional Republican might
not vote for Kerry no matter the reason.
           1) religion
           2) abortion
           3) gay
           4) minorities, min wage
           5) they're Amish
Come on. The election was never about anything but the above
items that some people hold dearly as the one true core
value in the world. People who value the above dearly, don't
give a damn about Iraq or deficit or whatnot.
\_ I was talking about the sector of Bush supporters who are
more concerned about issues as opposed to "keeping the Queers
              in line"
more concerned about issues as opposed to the "keeping the
Queers in line" group, who will always be immune to reason.

11/1 10/30 Why is my t-mobile reception so bad? Could it be the phone or
is t-mobile just worthless around here?
\_ T-mobile has the smallest network of the majors.
\_ Kind of depends where `here' is. T-mobile doesn't have any
towers in Northern California; they rent tower time from
Cingular. In case it's not clear, there is, effectively, only
one GSM carrier in northern California.
\_ My AT&T reception has been going to hell as of lately too.
\_ As of a few months ago Cingular users can use ATT towers and vice
versa. It's possible your area had lots on Cingular users and
              not that many Cingular towers.
\- man why cant they make cell phones that have good signal ...
i dont care whether it can play tetris or surf the
WEEB or manage my stock portfolio. has anybody made a
phone that has signal strength as its only distinguishing
feature? now that i'd pay for.
\_ verizon. great signal, but aside from that, phones suck.
\- i meant a phone unit, not a service. surely something
                       can be done with antenna/amplification.
\_ Phones already have amplifiers, but amplifiers are
'dumb' and amplify both signal and noise. The SNR
is what really matters for a phone. To improve the
SNR you can add a phased antenna array, which will
massivly increase weight, power consumption and
cost, or you can use a high-gain antenna, which is
by necessity directional. A high-gain antenna would
be big, which is bad for a phone, and would depend
strongly on orientation, which is very bad for a
phone being moved around. The best compromise would
be a long straight antenna, which is not as big as a
dish, and has the only directional requirement that
it is upright. Most phones use antennas which are
about (8/7)*(1/2) wavelength long so they get optimum
performance when slightly off perfect vertical.

11/1 OK, this was on Fark, but it seemed interesting enough that the motd
would appreciate it: If someone votes early (by absentee or whatever)
and then dies before election day, should their vote count?
(No 'the dead already vote' trolls, please)
\_ It seems that it should. The act of voting becomes valid at the time
of voting, not at the time the results are tallied or the time the
           polls close. -- ilyas
polls close. If someone has a heart attack on the way from the
polls, it's the same thing. To use a less controversial example --
if someone signs his will, and then dies minutes later, the will
           is still valid. -- ilyas
\_ I sort of agree, but another way to look at it is that the
election only happens on one day, and early voting methods are
just a courtesy, and your actual vote only happens on election
day, so the dead have not really voted, just mailed in an intent
              for their vote to happen.
It seems 'fairness' in this would usually be overshadowed by
partisanship, as in "Who would the recently deceased likely vote
              for?"
\_ Your statement "the election only happens on one day" is
fundamentally flawed. You might want to start from there.
In most voting systems I of which I am aware, the vote is
cast in time once it is sealed or placed in a ballot box.
Once your dead person sealed their absentee ballot, it was
                 cast. :wq

                 cast.
\_ Except the law doesn't match what you just said in many
                    places. Sorry.
\_ Only if they voted for Kerry.

interesting, and I think that the fact that Nader is attempting
to appeal to conservative voters is interesting. If you post

11/1 "A Failed Presidency", LA Times editorial (no endorsement for Kerry)
        http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/la-ed-bush1nov01,0,6861797.story
"If elections were solely a job performance review, President George W.
Bush would lose in a landslide. He has been a reckless steward of the
nation's finances and its environment, a divisive figure at home and
abroad. It's fair to say that Bush has devalued the American brand in
the global marketplace. What keeps this a close race is voter
discomfort with Sen. John F. Kerry and the success of Republicans in
stoking concerns about Kerry's fitness for office. But the thrust of
the Bush campaign message -- essentially, you are stuck with me in
this frightful time because the other guy is too unreliable -- is a
tacit acknowledgment that he can't allow the election to be a
        referendum on his record."
\-i think framing this in personal terms, i.e. you are not just
voting for bundle of policies A or B, is good. however evaluating
BUSHCO with sort of a "wall street journal metric" i dont think
is adequate ... i think he deserves moral condemnation as well.
presiding over something like abu graib goes beyond he didnt deliver
enough shareholder value. and delivering shareholder value doenst
make up for allowing something like that to happen ... we hopefully
have higher standards for heads of state than for pro-athletes.--psb

11/1 OMG! I know this is Rush and he's a shill and a liar but are his
numbers real? Can someone help me to refute this stuff? Someone
sent me this and I'm raelly worried now.
        http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/home/daily/site_110104/content/stack_a.guest.html
\_ He's completely full of shit.
\_ Election day is tomorrow! Just forget about the stupid polls!
\_ how much right is Rush? Ultra right, slightly right, ???
\_ The important thing about Rush is that Rush is an idiot.
His actual political leanings are much less important. -- ilyas
\_ Rush is a radio guy first, an idiot second, and a right-winger
third, IMHO. By that I mean that you shouldn't compare him
to, say Ann Coulter, but rather to Howard Stern or Adam
Corolla. His job is to entertain people who are stuck in
their cars with nothing to do but listen to the radio.
Being an idiot and a nut comes second, and frankly as a guy
who used to commute over an hour in a car with only AM radio,
I have to admit he's pretty good at what he does.
\_ Of course, just as Michael Moore is good at what he does.
I compare him to Moore, though their media of expression
are different. They are both 'dangerous' for the same
reason. People like Rush or Moore have a way of defining
discourse far beyond what is their legidimate due as
entertainers. Actually, I take back my earlier comment,
Rush may not actually be an idiot, he may merely have a
certain radio persona. He is sort of in a Turing test
equivalence class with idiots. -- ilyas
\_ This may be the first time an ilyas sentence made me
